I wonder why the writers choose serena to be an actual girl companion canonicaly being in love with ash.

Why they took it so long? I mean, this whole subplot could be done with May, Dawn or even Iris. Why they choose serena?

1. May came directly after Misty so having another girl crush on Ash would be too soon. Since May and her Contest story were aimed at girls, introducing Drew and giving her a shoujo love plot made sense.

2. Dawn was basically female Ash. She was also likely lesbian. All her most popular ships in the games and anime has Dawn paired up with girls like Zoey or Cynthia, In the anime she and Ash were basically siblings.

3. Iris...no.

Serena came at the right time. A decade after Misty's departure, France is the land of love, she could be worked into Ash's backstory, and it sets her apart from the other girls.

This. I've thought this myself within the couple of days after the episode aired.

Serena loses to Elle, Yashio offers to train her to be better than Elle. Elle loses to Serena afterwards, Yashio offers to train Elle to be better than Serena. The cycle repeats over and over again, and the only one who profits from it overall is Yashio.

Furthermore, Yashio and Elle are so secretive between each other that I could completely buy Yashio doing this to her own pupils.

I don't even care at this point. I never watched the show for amour and it's become obvious they'll just keep stringing people along and won't do anything interesting with it. And by interesting I mean using it to motivate Ash, an angle they've pulled a whopping two times, yet remains the only thing resembling a dynamic between Ash and Serena.

Mind you I used to just enjoy the spaghetti and NTR, knowing it won't amount to much because I'm a grounded reasonable person who actually watches anime. But amourfags just fucking killed it for me, and now I can't see it without also seeing the insufferable cringe it spawns.

I think its interesting Ash's only two rivals so far, Tierno and Shota, are just weak/friendly rivals that don't seem very powerful. The writers probably did want to avoid another Trip, but at the same time his rivals are just kinda there.
