XY is good, but the lack of a Paul-quality character is why I still rate DP higher.

It's too bad Dunsparce is usually a mid-to-late game encounter. Having one early on would be fun even without Serene Grace

It wasn't a great ending, but it was no worse than how any other league has ended. At least in this one, the circumstances of Ash's loss made clear how strong he was, rather than just losing to some random kid. Still, it's definitely one of the weaker points of DP. Doesn't ruin the rest of it for me, though.

True, but there was some good stuff during that time. The Galactic arc, some good contests, I think there were some excellent Team Rocket episodes if I recall. Yeah, the pacing really had issues there, but it wasn't wall-to-wall Johto-style character of the day filler.

Well of course, I'm not saying I'm glad there was a year between gyms. There shouldn't have been. I'm just saying that at a fair amount of those episodes were actually quite good. And from a quick glance at the episode list, actually more than I remembered were directly plot-relevant, featured rivals or other interesting characters, or were at least part of some multi-episode arc.

So yeah, the year gym gap wasn't great, but I don't think it ruined the series.
