Megas aren't inherently a terrible idea since some pokemon will probably never be fixed without one, especially garbage stage 3 pokemon like beedrill. Split megas are just an excuse to cut down on the number of new pokemon. That being said, Charizard X and Y are both perfectly fine, if they had to get rid of one I don't really know which I'd want gone.
