Former Pokemon player here considering getting back into it. Can someone please red pill me on mega evolutions.

Am I understanding them right... So a decent amount of Pokemon can do it, but not all, and to do it, you need a special item. HOWEVER, once you get the item, you can use it infinitely, making your Pokemon transform every single battle if you want, and these megas are almost all much stronger than any non-mega.

Is that how it works? If so, what the fuck is the point of training a Pokemon that can't mega evolve, if you're into battling online etc? Is online just 100% filled with megas? Sounds fucking stupid, just shrinking the pool of useful Pokemon.

I hope I'm wrong. Please explain.

First post best post. That sounds much better. Are the Megas that much stronger than a strong regular Pokemon, or is the boost a bit smaller? Like, are we talking about going from normal to super Saiyan, or from SS2 to SS3

It depends of the pokemon, but yeah, they generally get great buffs when mega evolve.

As mentioned, you can only mega evolve once per battle, so youll almost always have a team with only 1 mega. They become a sort of central point, a "Hero" or your team, if you will. Theyre not always necessary a super sweepermon, we've seen a lot that act as supports or specific counters.

Also, items are a huge deal, they act considerably to heighten the strenghts of your pokemon and it's versatility, so Mega's arent always a straight upgrade. Sometimes it is, there's no reason to use non-Mega Altaria for instance. Sometimes it's a trade off, non M-Scizor for instance is extremely versatile as a staple to teams, but M-Scizor can easily act as the main offensive pokemon as well. And, in some cases like Latios, even though M-Latios gets a stat upgrade, standard Latios still outdamages it with held items.
If you've ever played competitive, you can probably see how this plays into mindgames. Generally the higher up you get on the ladder, the better you get at eyeing and figuring out the foes mega on a fly, but if a foe has 2 potential Mega pokemon, reading the foe to see which one it is becomes a game in and of it's own. Mega Charizard having 2 equally viable Megas is a stand out example of this, as they hit on opposite spectrums so youll need to get good at reading team builds to figure out which one the foe is packing.

Megas add another layer of strategy to team building. Theres a few instances of GF taking a step too far and making them too broke, but for the most part theyre in order.
