OP here I restarted X because I cheated and didn't box mons. Gonna not wuss out on this one, and the only rule I'm gonna use is the dupe rule.

Party so far:

I just started a run of sacred gold and I already lost my starter totodile. Not even at the first gym. Fucking ralts out of nowhere just rected everyone.

I guess I'm not starting over but shit man, totodile is one of my favorite pokemon, it sucks.

How do you do to keep going with your runs, /nuzgen/? What if somehow you run out of steam and can't keep playing for a while?

I'm kinda stuck in flawless. Nothing bad has happened (other than losing my save, but it was just a couple of minutes of grinding, nothing to recapture) but I can't find it in myself to keep going for now.

I have 2 more catches before Petalburg gym. Here's to hoping I stay lucky. Roselia and Machop are breeding leftovers, Poochyena is a regular catch and Munna is a Unova transfer.

So I was going to do an X nuzlocke or possibly wonderlocke, but I can now use my old flashcart on my 3DS. So now I'm torn between HeartGold or Platinum and Black both of which I've never played before. Only thing I'm hesitant about is how difficult everyone says they are and I'm still new to these challenges.

Should I just go with HeartGold since that's supposed to be the "easiest" of the DS games? Or would XY be safer for a newbie?

Does anyone have a gallery/collection of non-gif sprites from ORAS?

I had the same problem with my FireRed and Emerald runs. They weren't going bad or anything but I just lost all interest. FR was probably because I've played Gen I to death over the years, but Emerald I hadn't played before but was still boring me.

I sort of just lurk right now hemming and hawing about trying some other game, maybe one of the more difficult ones.

Playing Y and find a Golurk. It's Jolly, but has Klutz as an ability. Why is this an ability? Who thought it was a good idea. I could have had Iron fist.

Yeah I was thinking about it. His Sacred Gold hack got me interested in Pokemon again back around when XY came out. I might try FireRed Omega and see how it goes.

I tried picking FR up again just now and the first thing that happened was my Growlithe, my favorite Pokemon in this run, was just taken out by a Kadabra's future attack foresight. So that doesn't help.

Decided to do Heart Gold instead of going into Platinum and Black blind. I'm a little rusty on Pokemon games and have a lot of nostalgia for gen 2 so I figure this'll be a good foray into nuzlockes. My FireRed run that was boring me ended when I was wiped out in Koga's gym. I was unprepared but probably not giving it my all.

I still can't recover my lost Emerald save sadly. So Heart Gold it is. Only thing about Heart Gold I don't like is the day nighy system. I mostly play at night so I won't see many morning/day-only Pokemon. Also the experience rate worries me that everyone complains about. Looking forward to this run though.

Someone pick my starter for me though.

Well I had a mixed bag of stuff happen around Goldenrod. Losing Gabriel by him blowing himself up was a complete surprise, though I guess it was only a matter of time before something like that happened if I kept using Metronome. Nostri dying hurt a bit more, since she was starting to not suck now that she had bite and I was looking forward to a Crobat. But thems the breaks.

Werner wasn't actually the first Pokemon I encountered on Route 35, but since the first one was another Nidoran Male and he was shiny, I decided to use Werner instead.

Can someone explain IVs and EVs to me?

IV=Innate stats your pokemon starts with.

best IV is 31, which means at level 100, you will have 31 just straight up stats in whatever it was(attack/speed/HP/etc...)

EVs are stats your pokemon gets from fighting others. Every pokemon you beat gives EVs.

So lets say you were playing ORAS and needed a 252 speed/252 attack EV.

You would go farm Zigzagoons for speed, and that ghost that isnt duskull in Mt Pyre for attack.

Each gives 1.

Pokerus doubles EV gain.

Macho Brace doubles that EV gain and stacks.

EVs arent like IV though.

252 EV doesnt = 252+ in that stat.

Where as IF you could get 252 IV in a stat you WOULD increase that stat by 252 by level 100.

If you don't mind a few types and stats changes, go for Complete. Every change is in the documentation too, and it feels like a new game because you have to adapt to those changes and all. None of them are ridiculous, they just make shitmons viable and add a bit of variety to the movepools.

You can fish in many towns. Also, you get the fishing rod very early in Dray's hacks, might even be before the first gym I think. So you catch something in Cherrygrove, Violet City etc...

FRLG are pretty easy, especially Viridian Forest. It's your run so play however you're comfortable, but if you get too bogged down in grinding then you might find yourself getting bored of the challenge.

What's the general rule in regards to areas that force a NPC on you (etc. your rival in Castelia sewers).

I ask because of the instant heal after battles mechanic.

Should deaths still count even though they get returned to full health straight after?

Wouldn't it be a bit awkward to have someone die, then healed but then you run into another random encounter with the "dead" guy at the front who then goes into battle.

The death still counts, I'd imagine. Just swap out the lead Pokemon after the battle. If you have no other Pokemon to swap to, it'd be a game over.

This run is still alive, not far from Clair

I'm loving the changes in FireRed Omega. Got a Ponyta in Route 1 and a Ralts in Viridian. Kind of regret receiving Trecko in Route 2 instead of going for a catch, as I got an Oddish in Viridian Forest. Took my Old Rod back to Pallet Town and caught a Shellder.

Also got a Sentret west of Viridian City but lost it while trying to level up to a critical hit.

Just going through the forest and trying to get some levels on some of these guys. It's pretty slow going as the experience curve seems to be different than what I remember FireRed being. That Ponyta was level 2 when I got him and it was a pain to level up.

I'm thinking of starting a type-run that's exactly like a regular nuzlocke, except that you can only catch a specific type of pokemon (chosen randomly), and you get to choose the catch for each route (to make it easier to get your team filled)

Or instead of a specific type, you go for a specific theme like crustaceans or reptiles.

Has anyone tried something similar? Is it fun?

Wow, that was nothing. One of the easiest gym battles I've ever had in a romhack.

The tandem Flaure/Romane destroyed that gym, one covering the other's weaknesses. If only there couyld be more gym battles like this...

Lost my first Pokemon in my HeartGold run. Ghastly was lost on my way to Azalea Town after beating faulkner. Forgot Goldeen had peck so I nearly lost my Bellsprout. Switch to Ghastly who was confused by Goldeen and hurt himself followed by a critical Peck.

Confusion is so infuriating in nuzlockes. Never seems to affect enemies as much as my team.

So one mutilation of a silhouette and an overdesigned readout later, I'm still kinda proud of it.

Anyway, because I'm reaching for themes and because I felt the image at the center of this thing needed to be made, have a Game of Thrones-themed Nuzlocke extended run that I am sure will at least be better than Season 5, and it's already gotten off to a roaring start by having a death early.

I was also in the middle of training up that Whismur when the though occurred to me that perhaps I should limit the number of 'Mons in my party to match those of the leaders, raising in increments, so why not. Should make it more entertaining. Just a bit more grinding to do.

Dude, I'm at Celadon, and a few tips:

WAY over level yourself for gyms. They're 200x tougher than you'd expect. When you think you're ready to fight them, put on 3 levels more. Expect bizarre coverage mons that don't fit the rest of the team.

In Mt. Moon, use repels until you get down to the lower levels, there are some really sweet pokemon when you go deeper.

Get the old rod in Vermillion and backtrack to Pallet to fish before you go into the forest. Pretty much every zone has potential captures, so keep your eyes peeled!

Some scary moments, like when Layvin missed a Hi Jump Kick and nearly died. I think I need to get rid of that move, it's just not worth it in Nuzlockes.

Why is the BW Victory Road so shitty for grinding on? Who thought giving you nothing but Durants was a good idea?

HeartGold run ended in Azalea to Silver. Half my team was weak to water, but more importantly they flinched to every one of Croconaw's and Zubat's bites and hurt themselves nearly every attack because of supersonic.

I'm a bit annoyed by how it ended, just didn't seem very satisfying to lose that way. Don't have any patience to go through HeartGold's long as fuck intro again. Debating between trying a Plat or Black 1 next, never played them before or just playing through them normal to see the stories. Think the stories are worth it?

Just beat Ghetsis with this team. Fuck N and everything about his shitty team. He didn't get any of my pokemon, but he really annoys me. Anyways, swept Ghetsis with Boardshort the Scrafty after a ~30 turn set up of Work Ups, X Speeds/Accuracies/Defends/Sp. Defends and a Dire Hit. Felt really good OHKOing every one of that fat faggot's losermons.

I played it as a nuzlocke for the first time through and I hated missing out on all the different pokemon the region has to offer. I'd definitely play it normal, I think it cows the closest to recapturing that childlike feeling of discovery that the originals did.

Welp, just got TPKd by Erika in Omega, that gym was misleadingly weak up until the end. I'd complain about lazy difficulty scaling but it would just come off as being a sore loser.

I took Reshiram into my party as a safety, it replaced a low level shitmon I used to fill out the 6th slot. It didn't actually need to see use.

For items, meh. It was my first nuzlocke and I wanted to start off with a lighter challenge. Ghetsis was the only trainer I needed to spam items on anyways.

If the way I play Pokemon isn't what you like, that your issue. My next game won't use legendaries period, and will limit item use, which I'm sure will be more agreeable.
