Hugh is a horribly-written character. Until Zinnia came about, he was the worst character in the series.
Every single conversation, it was just "muh purrloin". Fucking yeah, Hugh. A group that steals thousands of Pokemon will remember one particular Purrloin they stole years ago. It's not like Purrloin is common as fuck.

But he was the Pokemon Champion.

I want a rival that starts off like Barry and Bianca, really happy and energetic and friendly, and has a lot of offscreen wins that leads them to become like Blue and be an arrogant prick.

Obviously I want their teams and skill to be appropriate for someone who has gotten cocky from winning so much.

By the end of winning a lot but always getting their ass kicked by the player, they tone down their dickery and realize they may be hot shit, but they're not the hottest shit, and chill the fuck out.

I think XY could have been a lot better if Calem/Serena joined Team Flare. I really thought that was the way the story was heading, with how depressed they act when you keep beating them and how they start avoiding the rest of the group.
Shauna was cute and all, good for her for having a Psuedo, but holy shit she was not even close to enough to save that one-dimensional shitshow of side characters.

I miss antagonistic grudge rivals and I'd love one where the rival is actually legitimately unhappy with you for whatever reason. Dual rivals who are meant to be like mentors to the player, but lightly mock them for being less experienced.
Smug male rival who insists that strategy and careful planning are key to winning battles.
Overconfident female rival who rushes into battle without forethought and relies on overwhelming the opponent.

Basically these two with an added dash of rivalry and battle sense.

Also I hope the player's rival will be his sister / brother (optional gender choice), that will add a brotherly rivalry and will become champion before you eventually.
As opposed to a female villain leader to add to the waifu collection album.

Rivals and champions already got brothers and sisters, so would be a nice change.

And an optional feature to have a double battle with the Champion or Champions too.

Another Rival like Gen 1 or 2 (moreso 2) where they're very much not your friend.

He only uses Gen 1 pokemon because their "better than rest" and then by the end he realizes how stupid he is and starts using pokemon from other gens.

Ideally they're both good trainers with good teams. Rivals should be challenging. The friendlier one shouldn't just be popping out everywhere to tell you obvious shit and hold your hand so you don't have to think. Also... They need actual character depth.

But who am I kidding? We're getting Kalos Rivals 2: Handholding Boogaloo. Can't let the kiddies have any sort of a challenge because they have the attention span of a demented goldfish.

I really hope the rival is really nice and friendly, and doesn't put up a challenge in battle, because he doesn't care about winning much. I want then to be completely non-threatening and fun, even better if they constantly compliment me on how great I am. Bonus points if there's more than one and they're all like this.

It's been so long since we've had a rival like Blue that I wouldn't even care if it was a carbon copy of him at this point. I've thought about it a lot and he really is the best rival in the series.

Personally, I would really like to see a rival with a "procedural" team designed to, if not counter, at least check your team that you used last.

So, when you win a fight, the game checks the Pokemon you used, and uses that to determine what would be in the rival's next team.

It could be simple as having a pool of 18 Pokemon, where the game just tries to get the best coverage.

However, I would love if they could somehow figure out your "playstyle" and adapt accordingly.

Do you use set up moves like Swords Dance a lot? They pack Unaware/PHazing.

All special attackers? Bring on the Blissey!

Do you use Volt-Turn/switch a lot? Throw down some sneaky stones.

A defensive team? Wallbreakers.

They could even comment on the battle afterwards. Whether you barely take damage, or its a very close call. Or, even just commenting on your team, like if you boxed your starter or got an out-of-region Pokemon.

These motherfuckers try their goddamn hardest to be the very best and nothing stops them. They have different personalities for the same cause and that's what sets them apart. Blue thinks he's hot shit, Silver thinks being cruel is the way to go, Barry gets a slap in the face and proceeds to better himself and has the best Rival team in the series and Cheren realizes what he has no idea what he was chasing for but decides to find his own purpose in life

Brendan and May don't come off as pathetic in the remakes at least. Wally is the story of a young nobody becoming strong, but has little to no prominence so there's no reason to give a shit. Bianca works as a great foil for Cheren in somebody without a purpose discovering herself compared to Cheren starting out with an empty purpose, but proceeding to lose himself. That said Bianca isn't as much of a necessity as Cheren was and kind of exists to make him a better character

Even if the reasons were justifiable it was really his only character trait, similar to how the character traits of X and Y's friends were just a singular, "I'm smart and I'm trying to fill the Pokedex" and "I like to dance and I'm a fatass!"

Previous rivals were at least geared towards the goal of being your rival, but Hugh was hardly even a rival. Just some guy that's apparently your friend and you fight now and then. It was a step in the wrong direction that lead to X and Y

For XY I think Serena/Calem should definitely be their own rival separate from your friend group. It seems so out of place, for some reason, that they even partcipate in the ridiculousness of those ones.
Shauna is awesome I love her, I just wish she could be more of a threat. Maybe she meets Serena/Calem rival and they think they're going to be the mega user (besides you) but Shauna ends up being the one. Then a pre Victory Road last Serena/Calem battle and post Victory Road Shauna battle proving which one was the "better".

I don't totally mind Trevor, his Pokedex motivations are fine, but maybe give him a full team each time you battle him to emphasize the fact that he's catching a lot of Pokemon.
And I think Tierno could use a complete overhaul, he could be partially Trevor's motivator to be strong besides just catching Pokemon, they just need to make himself stronger. He could totally be a dancer still just with a more dancing themed team.

One rival similar to Blue and Silver in attitude but with a better personality. When we beat them they should acknowledge that we were better and strive to better themselves. They shouldn't be whiny bitches about losing, but learn from their mistakes, forming better teams each time we battle them. Every battle should have a big difficulty spike since the last and they need to have good AI and good teams. In other words, something that will never happen.
