Is this really a big thing that happens really often? I have never experienced anything like this when it came with playing my 3ds in public and I can be a socially anxious person on how people view me. I do it all the time at the mall where my job is located and none gave a second glance unless they are interested in gaming themselves. Also get a fuck-ton of streetpasses almost every time and have battled a few people here and there along with playing other games with passing people.

Think gaming has gotten common enough in the public eye that it just like playing with your smart phone, especially handhelds. So unless you're a magnet to helicopter parents that shun others for doing stuff their perfect child doesn't do, or people that shame people just for the sake of mocking somebody that do things 'they' don't do themselves. I think you'll be just fine playing in public.
