before the physical/special split happened, I had no idea types were locked in to what type of attack it was
I always assumed contact moves were physical and projectiles were special
I was very surprised when gen 4 happened to find out this was new thing
>>
whenever i saw shit like "so and so's attack rose!" i thought it meant an actual rose, like a flower. i never understood it

used to pronounce repel as reh-pol

used to pronounce plateau as pla-teh-ah-oo

luckily i never had to say the words out loud

red taught me lots of new words

I thought thunderstone was an attack like a tm, and so I gave it to my eevee becuase it was the only pokemon on my team that could "learn" it. I remember watching it evolve and wondering what the fuck was going on. After it evolved I checked its moves and it still didnt know "thunderstone" so I bought another one and tried again but it couldnt learn it anymore so I switched off my game without saving and tried again. After my third try I just gave up and kept Jolteon. Jolteon to this day is still one of my favourite mons

I did not know that Hoothoot and Noctowl were Flying types, but you can't really blame me, considering owls aren't birds, it's really game freak's fault for giving them a typing that doesn't make any sense.

I think a lot of people assumed this when they were younger. Like, why wouldn't Fire Punch, thrown from a beefy arm, be something that used a pokemon's attack stat?

That's one of the reasons they changed it in Gen 4. It just made sense.

I had that too. Obviously in Red I never used stat changing moves because they don't do damage, but I got upset when an opponent lowered my attack.

>>25021711

Now THIS one I don't understand. How could you possibly think the word "rose" in that sentence was a noun? The construction is totally wrong.

Weedle's [attack rose] what? What is happening to Weedle's [attack rose]? What ABOUT Weedle's [attack rose]?

Even as small children, humans are very good at recognizing language patterns and knowing which ones are 'correct' and 'incorrect.' You must have known that "Weedle's [attack rose]!" wasn't a complete sentence the way you were reading it, right?

It took me until gen3 to realise that breeding was even a thing. I always treated the day care as a cheap way of levelling mons because that's the way it was explained to me.

For a while I thought every pokemon was obtainable in the same game (gotta catch 'em all) and that legendaries were really rare random encounters. I passed through the entire game checking every area multiple times to fill the dex only to finally be hit by the truth.

I didn't understand what the special stat was and assumed all damaging moves were tied to attack. I didn't start to question this assumption until I saw how high my Mewtwo's special was while hs attack wasn't dramatically better than some of the other pokemon in my party.

Another consequence of the fact that most of the rock types in Gen 1 were also ground types, same reason why so many people think rock is immune to electric attacks. I was fortunate enough to accidentally take out Lance's aerodactyl with a thunderbolt and learn the truth that way.

Ditto evolved into Diddette

Dunsparce was a legendary

Red Gyardos had to be captured for the game to continue

Lance was actually a dragon man
>>
-I used to think that lowering the stats of a pokémon made it easier to catch.
-That the order of a pokémon type mattered (Like a grass/fire would take more damage from a bug move than a fire/grass)
-it took me quite a while to realize bulbasaur was grass/poison.
-I though EV were the ones you passed through breeding instead of IV and always EV trained the parents before breeding.
-I though something meaningful happened when you completed the dex.
-Even when I was a kid playing RSE I noticed differences in power between my starter from every new save I started (I played ruby a lot of times) but never realized it was an actual mechanic, so I brushed it off as my imagination.

i thought that if you levelled up by using a rare candy your pokemon wouldn't evolve or gain the same stat boosts. i would never use rare candies, or if i did, i would stop before the evo level and gain exp normally to evolve it.

That is technically true since you wouldn't get the EV that you normally get battling.

true, that's probably where i got the notion. but i thought that you would lose out on the chance to gain stat points and never have the ability to reclaim them meaning your lvl 100 pokemon wouldn't be as strong as they could be.

I also to this day am convinced that Rock types resist electric and am always pissed off when a mono-rock guy get's wrekt by Thunderbolt, of course it's because most of them are half Ground type

i didn't know how to use x stat items and had my starter hold one through the whole game without noticing

also holy shit lugia isn't water type, why does it learn hydro pump
>>
>>25040303
I always thought steel was weak to electric and I still don't understand why it isn't.
>>
>>25031457
what's the point of making electric into lighting-type and not doing anything else with it
>>
>>25039431
>That the order of a pokémon type mattered (Like a grass/fire would take more damage from a bug move than a fire/grass)
I thought I was the only one.
>>

TCG went to shit when they added Darkness and Metal.

Now there's Dragon and Fairy???!
>>
>>25020864
I used to think there were a lot of other pokemon and places that were almost impossible to get or were "accidentally" programmed into only select games. Basically every time some little douche wanted to show off and said he found a scizor in the safarii zone of red version, or that he found a way to the orange islands on gold version, I half believed him.

>>25039431
>I though something meaningful happened when you completed the dex.
Didn't we all, anon? Didn't we all?
>>
Paralyzed was pronounced Par-zay-leed
>>
>>25020864
>Was told and believed that there was a way into the orange Islands in GSC.. That a secret door opened up behind red if you did some shit
>That you could go to space and catch Jirachi/Deoxys in RSE
>Mew under the truck
>Something actually happened if you completed the dex
>Unowns actually did something
>You could 'unlock' the move hidden powers true potential and it'd be an amazing move
>pressing B+Down boosted your chance of catching a mon
>You could get mewtwos armour from the first movie in game
>You could find that bulbasaur sanctuary from the anime in game
Basically if anyone told me any random BS about the pokemon games when i was a kid i probably believed it
>>
>When you throw a pokeball, hold B+up
>When it closes shut, hold A
>After the second wiggle, release B+up

I still do this as a reflex

>I thought the design for Dunsparce was based on roadkill, a snake with tire marks on its back.

Wait, is he not? I thought that too; I also thought that's why he had the little wings
>>

>>25042891
Never saw that. Makes me like Dunsparce even more though it's probably not true.

I fell for the "If you get the rockets in Mossdeep to launch 100 times you can get Jirachi" meme

>When I first heard about Pokemon breeding I thought it meant that after a few generations of eggs, you could breed an Oddish into a Bellsprout or other similar Pokemon.

Hyperbeam was a good move.

I was pretty much the opposite. I thought any attack that didn't cause damage or prz or brn etc were a waste of time. The was no immediate visual cue for me to recognise so I just assumed it did literally nothing lol

It was a good one... In RGBY and Stadium.

i just slaped the move with the biggest number. one for each type at least and then whatevers.
i also played gen I in english, wish i didn't understand shit at the time and my first time gold in a rom in german wich i still don't understand beyond counting to five a few words due to the types. to this day i don't understand how i got through the games

this!

I could not fathom why there were even moves that didn't cause damage.

I used to think that when it said "aww, it appeared to be caught" while trying to catch a pokemon meant that it was someone else's pokemon and I wouldn't be able to catch it. Like "oh that pokemon was already caught by someone else do I can't get it"

I ran away from some pretty hard to find pokemon because of that.
>>
>>25043669
Kek did you never catch legendaries?
>>
I thought Pokemon was only a card game with shit based on it.

Didn't realize until middle school that there were games. Even though I was a big fan before that.

i used to think ditto evolved into sudowoodo when i was a kid, based on the fact they both have :) faces, & ditto = transforming, sudo = mimicry. at least i sort of had evidence, wrong as at was.

also, the pikablu and mew behind the truck muths

That Psyduck/Golduck were Psychic type and some of the most powerful pokemon

That Togepi was extremely powerful too

That Ghost was super effective against Fighting

That Politoeds were kings of Poliwraths

That Eevee evolved to Leafeon with a Leaf Stone

Trainer-Fly glitch.

Bet it's been patched out of the 3DS versions though
>>
My first ever pokemon game was gold and I restarted the game countless times because of the "overwrite" message that popped up when you saved the game.

I didn't know what it was, I thought it would ruin the game until i let some kid play it and saw him save.
>>
>>25052134
Uh, yeah there was. Like someone else posted, you have to do a glitch, and you can't do it if you fought every trainer already. It can be done on any RBY cart. I've done it, it does work indeed, and you can catch your very own Mew.

Lol.

Electric, fire, water, grass (back then I called plant), ghost, air, and rock
