I thought thunderstone was an attack like a tm, and so I gave it to my eevee becuase it was the only pokemon on my team that could "learn" it. I remember watching it evolve and wondering what the fuck was going on. After it evolved I checked its moves and it still didnt know "thunderstone" so I bought another one and tried again but it couldnt learn it anymore so I switched off my game without saving and tried again. After my third try I just gave up and kept Jolteon. Jolteon to this day is still one of my favourite mons

I thought stat changes were permanent. My Pidgeot used Agility a lot and always went first even when not using it. It made me reluctant to get in random battles with Rattata and such because they always use Growl.

I did not know that Hoothoot and Noctowl were Flying types, but you can't really blame me, considering owls aren't birds, it's really game freak's fault for giving them a typing that doesn't make any sense.

Back when I first played Gold, one of my Pokemon caught Pokerus. I thought it was a status ailment like Poison or Paralysis, but none of the healing items cured it, so I quarantined it in its own box until I could find a heal item for it. Didn't find out until YEARS later what Pokerus actually did.

It took me until gen3 to realise that breeding was even a thing. I always treated the day care as a cheap way of levelling mons because that's the way it was explained to me.

For a while I thought every pokemon was obtainable in the same game (gotta catch 'em all) and that legendaries were really rare random encounters. I passed through the entire game checking every area multiple times to fill the dex only to finally be hit by the truth.

For some reason I became convinced that if I had the Unown to spell D E O X Y S in my party and went to Altering Cave Deoxys would show up and I could catch him. I put a lot of effort into testing this theory.

I used to think that when it said "aww, it appeared to be caught" while trying to catch a pokemon meant that it was someone else's pokemon and I wouldn't be able to catch it. Like "oh that pokemon was already caught by someone else do I can't get it"

I ran away from some pretty hard to find pokemon because of that.

My first ever pokemon game was gold and I restarted the game countless times because of the "overwrite" message that popped up when you saved the game.
