Couldn't agree more with OP. I'm also a huge fan of Pokémon X/Y. I clocked over 1,500 hours in Y. It's easily my favourite Pokémon game. However, the graphics, animations and art style of Monster Hunter Stories is vastly superior, overall. It puts Game Freak to shame. I won't be surprised if this game becomes the "Pokémon killer" in Japan.

Digimon and Monster Rancher did decently for themselves if not very well. Of course, Pokemon "Killer" is the problem. At best we can hope for a game that does what Pokemon does but better and it'll be successful. There may even be people who look down on Pokemon because of the game.

Gamefreak and Pokemon are like Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls. Both companies feed people a type of game it'll take too long or too much effort for most other companies to start doing themselves - at least at a decent standard. They're both awful programmers who are outclassed by other games, but these other games only do a few things better(Which is why some people will say Far Cary 3 is more fun yet they drop it 100 times faster).

The best we can hope for is The Witcher 3 of monster taming. More people have invested in multiple open world games that demand hundreds of hours and people like me used to play Pokemon, Monster Rancher, and Digimon(and a bit of that shitty Pox game) all at once too. It won't kill Pokemon and TES won't be dead anytime soon but damn it, someone can still make a better game and have it widely recognized as such.

DQM is the superior title.

Monster Hunter already killed YW. Monster Hunter X, released November 28, 2015, has already surpassed the latest YW game, released July 2015, on the Japanese charts.

Monster Hunter isn't very big in the West though. I remember reading that Monster Hunter 4 sold 4,000,000 in Japan, but like 900,000 in the entire rest of the world in its first six months in the non-Japanese global market.
