So, I've been meaning to get into the Mystery Dungeon series, is this a good entry? From the feel of the thread, it seems like Explorers of the Sky is the best to go for. Should I even bother with this title?

Sky is very good but outdated compared to Super. Super does mostly all of Sky's features better besides recruiting but that's up to you.

Just get Super because it's the most recent with all 720 and it's just as good if not better than sky.

Listen you clod. You're not being told PSMD is already interesting. You're being told that it has yet to get interesting, as is the case for most RPGs (or stories in general). In order for a story to be meaningful, you generally first need to relate to and understand the characters. The first portion of PSMD is setting the backdrop for the rest of the story: you learn of your partner's dreams to have an end goal, you get introduced to a lot of your partner's personality through early quests to form a bond with him, and you get to know a few other characters like Nuzleaf, Carracosta, and Ampharos to get a bit of a cast going on.

Almost invariably, you need to first have a peaceful, fairly happy setting before shit goes wrong so that there's some feeling of escalation and stakes.

This guy's partially right, but I'd highly recommend Red or Blue Rescue Team, too. There weren't very many advances between them and Sky gameplay-wise, so if you're going to play Sky, you might as well play Red or Blue. They have awesome music and a great, heartwarming story. Also, many more legendary fights in the main game. That alone makes it pretty cool if you ask me.

You guys told me this was a great game.

Grindy as fuck, repetitive beyond belief, shitty looking dungeons with barely any characteristics of their own to differentiate between them and the story's better than the main series games, but still quite bad since all the characters are shit. The episodes are actually pretty solid story wise though

The game gets better once you get to sheer mountain. Until then the daily school life bit drags a lot (mostly because they're trying to build character development).

You'll get your money's by the second half of the game, don't pay attention to the boss counter at the bottom of save screen though it doesn't tell the whole story.

Part of the reason why I think Super has by far the best gameplay of the PMDs. I have to think about what I do instead of just coasting through the game such as in Explorers and Gates. Emeras and connection orb were pretty damn good additions in my eyes as well.

I played all the previous PMD games before and the beginning of the plot has never been as slow compared to this game.

I just beat the game; how the fuck do I get Shelmet back? That guy was really fucking based back in Lively Town (Struggle Bug is insane holy shit), and it was understandable that I'd lose access to him after I left, but now that I can return it really doesn't.
