Base zam can fight 1on1 against pokemon that the mega can't because of focus sash for example. but the most people will play it with life orb anyway.

as far as partners go, its pretty much the same story here as any other frail sweeper. wear down anything it can't immediately KO since it has non-existent bulk and hates all status. fighting and bulky fairy types as well as anything good for chip damage function very well.

Play doubles. Use with Slaking. On turn 1, have Alakazam use Skill Swap to give Slaking Magic Guard. On turn 2, Mega-Evolve Alakazam. He gets trace and traces something the opponent has. Now you have a Slaking without any drawbacks and a mega-Alakazam.
