May's largely the best known female lead (aside from Misty), to the general pokemon population for those reasons:

- She was the very first new female lead in the anime. Whenever people think about who came after Misty, May is the first thought on everyones mind.

- May was the first playable female lead at the start of a game gen in R/S...since Kris didn't exist till Crystal version.

- AG had the highest ratings of all the series after the OS simply because it aired back in the early 2000's when more people watch TV, so just by default she was the most watched/viewed female after Misty.

- May was also the first coordinator of the show, so even though Dawn got more screentime as a co-star, May is still the one who started the Contests arcs.

Its why I consider May practically a classic character now. Dawn almost too, but maybe next year when she hits a decade.

The originals of every remake out yet are considered "classic".

I would consider Gen 3 as a whole retro, as well as the GBA and arguably the Gamecube at this point. Millennials won't admit it off the bat but they're getting pretty damn old now. The GBA and GC will be 15 years old next year and R/S will be 14 years old.

So yes, May is a retro character. Give Dawn a few more years.

Yeah, its pretty obvious after the anime stopped being a slapstick comedy that's when Misty's role in the show pretty much died. During Orange Islands they tried to play up Pokeshipping but then they abandoned that too once Johto started.

Looking back Misty had no real reason to be in the Johto saga at all. They just had no new girl to replace her with at the time.

Time really does fly. Some people tend to forget how long its been since Misty left the anime and when May was introduced, people act like that just happened 5 years ago or something when in reality it was 13 years ago.

Probably why you still see people ranting about Misty on forums like she's relevant, even though she's been gone for 13 years. People have no grasp of the passage of time. I think they believe Misty just left 5 years ago.
