You do realize this was also the case in gen 5, right? Gen 5 did the same "ultra casualized" shit with gym leaders having no more than three Pokemon and the E4 only having 4. The only thing that changed is them adding the exp share. which is easy to turn off.

Pokemon was never not "casual". It's probably one of the most casual video games out there.

There's like, two non-casual individual battles in the entire franchise.

Stuff like Barry and Wally with their final battles lose a lot of their challenge when they can only be battled once the player has already done some challenge that will have their team be at a high enough level to deal with them.
