I like Greninja because it's a cool design (although I kinda miss the prevos bubble-scarf), but if you look into anything Pokemon related beyone the main game, it gets shoved in your face like crazy.

It's a frog. Frogs have long tongues. There's nothing wrong with having it be a prominent aspect of it. Actually, the fact that they could conjure up the usage of tongue as a means of expanding the ninja motif in itself is one of the most clever and risky design decisions i've seen in the past years. It also presents the added bonus of offering the design a much more interesting eye appeal via color contrasts that make sense yet use uncommon tints of it.

Literally anything could be simplified to polygonal shapes. If you want to criticize its shape, just use the words "angular" and "jagged" instead of copypasting retarded arguments just because you think they favor you.

The only thing that actually feels tacked on in Greninja is the tail-like thing it has. Sure, you can argue >MUH AERODYNAMICS as much as you want, but it feels slightly uncanny on a frog pokemon, and i'm pretty sure the spearheaded shape Greninja's head has, along with the spoiler horns makes it aerodynamic in itself.

Every other part of its design is near-perfectly executed.

This thread pretty much explains what went wrong with the whole Zoroark fiasco. It goes pretty into detail, but a couple posts show in a simple manner the core problems, like:

Yeah, there's also that. Zoroark, design-wise, i feel performs way better than Lucario, but regardless of how much you push it it won't stick as much.

People find it easier to relate to characters that can be looked up to. With convictions, heroic capabilities and whatnot. Zoroark was the opposite of that. A deceiving, untrustworthy little bastard. Things like that do get nice fanbases, like Gengar. But the overall fanbase it can appeal to is much smaller than the heroic type.
