I almost died a few months ago when passing near a protest and some protesters threw tear gas, it made me choke like crazy (at some point I couldn't breathe at all). Thankfully the cops who were here helped me recover.
A few minutes after I left the place, a militant came to me to explain me how the government and cops are assholes and the protesters are awesome people fighting for our freedom. I'll never forget his face when I explained him what just happened as I was obviously still in pain.

I don't understand how tear gas isn't yet considered as a chemical weapon.

It is considered a chemical weapon, and it's actually banned from international warfare. However, it is not banned from internal police usage. The police know and the world knows that they use chemical weapons.
I do agree though that that protester was shitty and rude: if he really wanted to fight for freedom, he'd be using a rifle against the police rather than tear gas.
