Is 4chan better or worse than it was 5 years ago?

Some boards are worse, a few are better. Most I would say are unchanged.

I feel like many newer boards like /out/ and /vr/ have been nice. It seems like the ancient boards /b/ /r9k/ and /news/ slash? /pol/ have festered and gotten to be ridiculous charicatures of what they were. I attribute this to a generally younger userbase. What do you think?

the screenshot is from 2007. several smaller chans used yy/mm/dd for the date. so it want really long ago.

Hard to say. It was definitely on a downhill trend, but things have been getting better since the end of 2014.

Pre-September 2014 /pol/ was great, and then that gaymergay shit came, and nothing was ever the same again. Not /pol/ is just a caricature of what it once was, except with /b/ shitters and brazen redditors.

I dislike how small the files sizes have gotten. Hard to post my favorite stuff now that 2 MB is the limit.

Pretty much this. The "4chan was never good" meme does have some truth to it, but it does have its moments and can be super entertaining.

One thing that I've noticed that has changed though is it isn't as... shocking. Like the content on lesser known boards has gotten "better" in some ways, but that's sort of killed the randomness on some of the other boards. Now that stuff like s4s, soc, etc exist, the random bullshittery that lead to some of the more epic threads has been split. Not that the potential doesn't still exist, just that it isn't as concentrated as before... and I'm not 100% sold on whether that is a good or bad thing. The same has come with the huge number of copy-cat sites and them young whipper snappers moving on to them newfangled meme posting places that has diluted the influence of this place in particular.

4chan is kind of like the famous basement bar for locals that went main stream over time. Now it's chocked full of tourists, other bars are trying to copy its success, and the original charm (just how fucked up the users were) has somewhat gone.

This is still a place on the internet for people to fuck around and laugh at the horrible things in the world before having to deal with the bullshit of offline responsibilities. I could get on here all the time in high school and college, but now that I have a real job and shit that actually pays me to be productive... well the real life grind is real whether we like it or not. That doesn't mean we have anything less to laugh about with our fellow anons, just that finally we're getting paid enough to put up with the bullshit (inb4 everyone is a NEET, the basement dwelling btard was a fucking joke we embraced but SOME PEOPLE took it too seriously).

I doubt we'll ever relive the Habbo hotel raids or Old /b/ or the Puddi Puddi invasion, but one can dream. Just remember:

Well put. I would add one other specific negative change is the much greater predominance of stock threads. There everywhere on /b/ and many other boards. You know what I'm talking about. The daily (hourly) dick rate threads, YLYL, meetup etc. These have always been there, but now such threads will often take up a huge portion of the catalog.

/b died. It's all just a bunch of young kids using it as a porn board and that fucking banana. I miss the trolling and intellectuals. To be honest I kinda feel robbed of the 4chan pass but i owe it to 4chan. I grew up here.

Depends on the board, but I feel 2011 was just about the worst time in general. That was around the time boards like /a/ and /v/ got so fast that the quality dropped off a cliff edge. Every other thread was about dubs or thinly veiled off topic /b/ shit. /v/ was basically /b/ 2.0. Also pretty sure that was around the time the whole lanced jack and taiga stuff happened.
/b/ was already far shitter than it had been for years by then, but I guess it at least wasn't the same 5 or 6 threads recycled hundreds of times a day. Also crossboard raids were a popular thing back then, ruining some of the quieter, more decent boards for hours at a time. Makes me laugh at all the people who complain about /pol/ "leaking out" onto the rest of 4chan, they clearly weren't around back when /b/ would make enough raid threads to knock everything on your favourite board off the end of page 10.
