Word is, Angel Beats is a pale imitation of Haruhi meant to cash in on the latter's initial surge in popularity. Like Log Horizon clearly is for SAO. Of course Log Horizon is much better than SAO, but not as well animated, and has less porn and related media overall. So it really comes down to what you want out of the experience.

You're partly right, but what appealed me the most about NHK was how much I could relate to the main character, right down to the fine details (like making a game and shilling it, or having my nerdy best friend suddenly fuck the cutest girl at school later on). It was like looking at a story about a future me, minus Misaki of course.

i just finished watching the anime, and that's basically correct. it was nothing like lucky star and tomoko was completely unrelatable.
couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be ironic or what. she's totally conceited but unattractive, and even got called ugly more than once. and apparently she smells like an old person. she's also degrading everyone around her in her head (most of this anime took place as her inner monologue), whether it's because they're ugly or fat themselves or if she simply sees them socializing which makes her angry or jealous for whatever reason.
she also keeps claiming to want friends but goes to extreme measures to isolate herself and runs away or mumbles when anyone tries interacting with her.
so either it was supposed to be ironic or she was supposed to have a serious mental disorder. probably a sociopath since she can't relate to other people and has no consideration for anyone but herself.

An important thing to do when watching anime is to keep track of names. Names of scriptwriters, directors, series composers, music composers, character designers, that kind of thing. Studios to a lesser extent.

When you see something you like, seek out more stuff associated with the names of these people. Then repeat the exercise when you find new things you like.

That's really the best way to get into anime.

Also stay away from sites like MAL, you might place some misguided faith in their "ratings" system based on being right much of the time, but they get it wrong on so many great series. Read absolutely nothing into the fact that a show has like 7 or less rating on MAL. Especially recently aired or currently airing shows. MAL is full of retards.

I think rating things out of 10 is retarded. It's usually done as a way of trying to falsely enhance the validity of one's opinion by showing how high their "standards" are. But it contains no useful information. Most shows aren't similar enough to compare on a simple spectrum like that.

I've only seen webms of SAO and from what I've seen the animation quality and action scenes are great, but then again, that's probably the reason people made webms of those scenes. A-1 is a good studio though. SAO just never appealed to me because of its premise.

I must admit that I've bought into the ratings fallacy too many times. To me, someone with very limited time, it's a way for me to efficiently search for a good show that has in a way been approved or screened by viewers before me. The trouble is, if you fully subscribe to the ratings system then you'll probably miss a lot of gems out there, especially on MAL and reddit where the hivemind mentality is cultivated.

It's much worse than that, anon. MAL is flawed in many ways. For one, because you can rate a show without finishing watching it. So a massive number of shows on there are rated by people based on the initial impression that it gave. And also by people who don't like a certain genre.

It also has a chilling effect on people who don't want to expose themselves to ridicule for highly rating something rated lowly by the community consensus. So people tend to be really reserved about giving high scores to shows that are new unless there is a lot of hype around them.

This also means that the ratings are top-heavy and the initial impression continues to give the series a high rating even if it only starts out good but gets bad later. Zankyou no Terror and Boku Dake ga Inai Machi are recent examples of this. The shows started out giving off "instant classic" vibes because of the people involved in them and the premises, but the general consensus about both of those shows is that they turned out either mildly disappointing or laughably bad.

Further to this, another less glaring flaw is that there is bias towards subsequent seasons. So Season 2 of a show will invariably have a higher rating than Season 1, not because it's better, but simply because nobody who disliked season 1 bothered watching season 2.
