Yes, this is what I meant, 9gag users when they come here they fully convert, they realize hows much of a bad site 9gag was, while reddit users still think their site is good and don't fully integrate and they are loud and annoying

I didn't mean that 9gag as a site is better than reddit since it's a way shittier copy

The insomniac games forums
>>
>>31846
Also because 9gag doesn't allow you to mention 4chan or Reddit. They censore it to keep their users from discovering a million times better sites. So 9gag users if they happen to hear about 4chan, let's say for example from a post or comment that still haven't got deleted yet, or from a friend from there that told them about 4chan, or from another place like Youtube while their main site was 9gag back then, and they decide to check it out, well they don't have an already bad pre-idea of it like Redditors have from other Redditors that keep saying bad things about 4chan.

That's how I myself discovered 4chan.

{ Story time. Prepare yourselves for the ride that I hope you will appreciate } :

I was a 9gagger. I used to comment on every post in the trending page (a part of 9gag where posts that will go afterwards to the hot page afterwards appear to first get some upvotes and not go directly from the fresh page to the hot page with only 300 likes). Those posts would be chosen by 9gag mods or because they accumulated 300 from the fresh page. When I say "or chosen by mods" I mean that 9gag literally l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y stole from Reddit with the same title without giving creddit to the original user that made the post on Reddit. Those were 50% of the posts that appeared on Trending page. Me one day i don't know why but I just randomly googled the title of one post from the trending page, and guess what, well first result was the reddit post, with a bunch of already existing comments from Redditors on it. I said to myself that no one from 9gag would think to randomly google the title of the posts so I am safe to steal comments from Reddit and paste them quick as soon as posts appear on trending page while only very few comments on it for my comment to get a lot of thumbs ups. I did and it worked. got tons of votes and people seemed to love the comments I posted. I went from trying to post on every trending post with my own 9gag cancer jokes to copying pasting way smarter and better comments from Reddit.
I was known on 9gag, since my comments would always be on the top of the comment section on the front page with most votes. They knew me by my username and profile pic.
I was safe because 9gag would basically delete comment that called me out for stealing comments from Reddit because they would be basically mentioning Reddit.
Back then I didn't even think of taking the time to discover Reddit, I was too blinded by the semi-fame I was getting on 9gag.

I basically only entered Reddit from after googling the titles and went back out immediately.
Sometimes I will only find the imgur post also with existing comments. Sometimes I would have to modify the title a bit to find the reddit post.
Kept doing it for a long time.
A lot of other 9gaggers after they saw me become famous from commenting one very post and receiving votes and my comments getting replies of people enjoying my comments, they joined me in commenting on every post with best coment they could think of. went from only me dominating to a lot of others commenting as soon as possible and trying to come up with best they could.
After a while, they too became famous and recognizable on 9gag. People recognized their usernames and profile pics.
After a while we the "famoousse" 9gag commenters would gather outside of 9gag on kik inside kik groups to chat about our 9gag experience and just to overall chat and becoming friends.
I still majority of time got the highest voted comment since I replied the fastest and with already ready good comments.
After a while, one day after I googled the title of a post like always and copied a comment from reddit and came back to 9gag to paste it I found a user already commented it. The same exact comment. I said wow weird by may be a coincidence. Wait few more posts and he commented with another comment that I was gonna steal from Reddit. And on another post again. And again and again.
I knew the that that user started doing exactly like me.
I was so scared and not relaxed.
But the urge for the attention whoring took me again and just decided to copy paste another highly voted comment from that Reddit post and let him have the one he wanted.
I did it and he knew it well and didn't say anything but we just continued to coordinate and choose a comment that the other didn't post.
After a while of us doing it. I decided to step forward to him and asked to talk with him on kik in secret.

He didn't want at first but kept persuating him. After some time he agreed.
I was so nervous and shy about asking him about that even if I wasd the one who begged him to talk with me on kik. But everything went well. He was cool and we started talking about it comfortably and became friends on kik. He told me that he was a Redditor (unlike me) and that like other Redditors he knew that 9gag stole from Reddit, so he decided to too steal comments from Reddit and posting them on 9gag to receive all the praise and attention. He told me that he knew about me from the moment he started commenting on 9gag ad that he wasn't planning on exposing me. It's also him that clarified me the whole 9gag being a thief site and how 9gag would censore every mention of Reddit. I didnt knew it at first. All people that knew about me and wanted to expose me would just get their posts deleted and their accounts banned without me seeing them I guess. After we started talking on kik everything changed for me. I stopped commenting as much, like I almost stopped completely, and only kept talking to him on kik. After a while of talking with each other and about our irl life and being friends with each other, he one day told me about 4chan. I first entered the site and saw all those words (board names on front page) and was intimitated and closed the window and went back to him. He explained to me that I have to click on those and they will send me to boards where all the fun stuff is.

He advised to start with /b/-random. I entered and since that day I stopped talking to him. The amount of fun amazing content my eyes and heart fell on was too much. I immediately fell in love with the site and never stopped. I was too fucking overflown by how good 4chan was in comparison to that shithole site that I was in (immeeeeense difference) that I compeletely forgot about the friend that showed it to me. Months went back and only then I remembered about my old friend, but I thought that he would have probably stopped using kik since I was basically the only reaso for him to use kik because I begged him to start using it to talk with me.
I still regret that I stopped talking with him but I didn't it intentionally. I physically forgot about him after discovering 4chan.
I still remember him to this day and his username and picture. And I stillam 100% grateful for him for making me discover 4chan!

And that was my story. That was more than 2 years ago. I never came back to being a 9gagger and in fact I hated 9gag and the horrible life I was having in it. Bad memories and I wish to never come back to that attention whoring level. It was also that I was still a teenager back then when I was a 9gagger and not a grown up adult.
I wonder what my old friend is doing with his life.

My "main" community is still a small webforum attached to a website of retro enthuasists that I moderate, for free. It's not even entirely "Internet friends", I meet some of them every year at the Chaos Communication Congress after christmas.

Otherwise I'm skipping around the web wherever there's a decent discussion to join these days. Small niche webforums, some chans, doesn't matter. Only social media are cancer that put monetizing as many users as possible over communication, so I avoid them.

I also was for a short time on Usenet a decade ago when it wasn't as dead as now, but most newsgroups these days are empty echo chambers for those that refuse (or aren't allowed) to use centralized services on the web. Some of them are at least amusing to read – comp.os.linux.advocacy for example is a more extreme version of old-/g/.

Do not underestimate the power of 'Someone on the internet is WRONG@@#!#!!11'; combined that with the rigidity of thought that's characteristic of ASDs, and you got a plethora of flamewars. That's not how it was on all newsgroups, but certainly the norm for some of them.

The biggest appeal of USENET was that it was pretty much the one and only place where everyone was, and even the stupid people were at least somewhat intelligent; you couldn't just stumble onto it and accidentally post. (It was rather difficult to get an internet connection, if nothing else.)

SA, and then iichan. I considered 4chan a far worse place for discussion compared to the smaller satellite chans that sprang after 4chan died the first time. Sadly the userbase of the better ones mostly dried up, and I settled back here.

Fark, then ED, then this here, then I left for hotwheelschan, and noew I'm back on 4chan

Also iichan. Shame it doesn't seem like they're around anymore. It was going to be my backup when hiro shuts down 4chan.
>>

How was your stay on gaymergayte chan? I tried the same back in 2014, but couldn't bear how slow the overall site was and 8gag /pol/ was full of a bunch of legitimate spergs (and still is, since last time I checked).
>>
>>33808
Why did you leave 8chan?

I tried visiting there a few times. It's a shame the community is so shit, because the core concept of the site is genius.
>>
>>33816
>because the core concept of the site is genius.
Is it really? Seems like all it does is cause insane fragmentation and circlejerking, with no way to aggregate related content either.

The organization is a mess (trying to select a board from a dropdown menu is a nightmare) since it's all on the same level. Plus, give the users too much power over their site and they will start to lose respect for the platform.
>>
>>33818
8gag is just reddit + 4chan - upboats and accounts. It's shit. They deserve getting flooded with redditors too, considering they're partially the reason /pol/ is so cancerous now (the frog god shittery came from there). They're also been found to be one of the reasons /qa/ turned to shit real quick.
>>

gamedev.net was my biggest one in my first year or so of internetting.

I might have discovered reddit slightly before 4chan (I was on both by 2008).
>>
>>33812
A few of the old boards are still run by their original hosts even if the main site is going under (again), like /azu/.

There's always the OverChan V.3, also under new management.
>>
>>33818
I haven't been there enough to know how it all shakes out in practice, but I assume it's something like Reddit: boards tend to fragment only as much as necessary. If two people create video game boards, only one of them will succeed and the other will die off. If it doesn't, that's because it fills a niche that the larger one doesn't.

Most of 4chan is too large and too fuckin' hive-minded these days, imo. A little more fragmentation wouldn't hurt one bit I don't think.
>>
>>33829
If this is true then there should be a garbage collection mechanism to vacuum up dead boards that nobody actively posts on
>>
>>33830
If I recall, 8chan actually does that. But I don't see why it's necessary either. The only problem I can think of with having a bunch of dead boards is navigation, and that's a very fixable problem. e.g., inactive boards get sorted to the bottom of navigation.

Jesus fuck, I just read it. That end. And I remembered that I saw a banner of it that 4chan has. I'm gonna trying keep click on the banner until I find it.

My main forum was samarkandsworld(do NOT go there now). Lots of porn and they had an arcade I dominated for some time. Looking at archive.org I was online there as early as 2003 and as late as 2008. Looking further I found out the head admin there died in 2014, sad, he was a good guy.

My main entertainment spot was newgrounds. I remember voting alot back in the day and being ranked in the top 300 or so global users, and caring about that for some reason.

I also frequented a few other forums, pinkdevils, pornbb, planetsuze(?).

I discovered 4chan around the time it first opened(2003/2004) looking for Major Kusanagi porn, found a thread and thought "this is great, you don't have to register." Looked for it few days later and it was gone, and thought this place is stupid and didn't come back for years. I got interested in papercraft around 2008 and google directed me to /po/ and I basically abandoned the rest of the internet except for youtube.
>>
Before 4chan I read books and played video games.

First of all, you should proofread your posts because your spelling as atrocious. And your posting style is kind of dumb.

Also, you should kik your old friend.

I remember Usenet, but I can't remember which particular newsgroups I was on outside of alt.games.sf2. Then most the fighting game community went over to Gouki's Page of Whatever, then from there to Shoryuken.

This, reddit users are hypocrites if they're part of the /pol/ pack, fucking cyber mexicans destroying our culture and making the host go bankrupt.

Fark Photoshop threads were fun. Unfortunately it's been so long ago that everything I made for those is lost to old webspace and image providers deleting my stuff.

Well it looks like generic palcomix crap, so start with that if you still want it for some reason.

Main website was RuneScape. I never bothered with the forums outside of trading.
In 2009, I believe, a clanmate mentioned an archived /r9k/ thread of crazy shit stories, like the most vile bowel movements people could think of in detail. Lost that link and didn't save it at all, but it was certainly interesting.
