So obviously you have disposable income. Why haven't you given to an organization that actually makes a difference in the world?
>>
>>21148
Like breast cancer research?
>>
i believe 4chan will make the biggest difference in the world.
>>
>>21148

"Makes a difference in the world"... such as what? Cancer "research" is searching for patentable treatments for profit. There are about a dozen CURES for cancer, but there's no money in a cure, now, is there?

I'm interested in establishing a foundation that would provide me with two or three very good bottles of red wine each day. That would make a big difference in my own personal world.
>>
>>21148
Simple to answer

4chan gives me something in return for my $20. What organization could I possibly donate to that can say the same?

I am a selfish man
>>
>>21148
I use 4chan more often. I actually don't know why I read Wikipedia so little now. I guess I get my information elsewhere now.
>>21171
Cancer is a class of diseases. Basically each cancer is its own unique disease. Each cancer that affects an organ, like say the liver, can also be caused in multiple different ways, meaning a cure for one wouldn't work for a different kind. It's like saying there's a cure for viruses.

The way our society works though, treatments are more incentivized than researching a cure.

I tried donating to wikipedia once, but I couldn't find any way to do it anonymously. I emailed support about it and all I got back was some garbage copy/paste that didn't even answer my question

If they can't let me donate and their tech support doesn't even understand english, they'll survive without my money.
>>
I fundamentally disagree with the institution of charity. I think it's a bandaid for what we should actually have, which is a government that invests in helping its poor, and its special interests. I would vote to both make charity illegal and make some sort of ministry of charity. I would much rather everybody in the country donate a cent annually as part of their taxes to whatever vetted Non-Profits happened. I'm a big believer in big government. Right now, shit like Susan G. Cummin suing other people for claiming to be searching for a cure to breast cancer while doing literally nothing to fund research about it pisses me the fuck off. A little more oversight in this disgusting non-profit charity racket is sorely needed to shut down bad actors. I also don't like the current model of donating to charities because only the most attractive causes get any money. Shit like donating money to starving children in Africa, Sarah McGlockenspiel on TV trying to torture me with pictures of sad animals, or shit like THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE are a disgusting neo-liberalistic farce. Noble institutions trying to cure ALS shouldn't be reduced to fucking youtube internet memes in order to generate enough funds. There should be a beaurocracy wherein you apply, state your claim, and a ministry official oversees and confirms you for a percentage of the budget, and taxes should be increased across the board so that everybody pays in a quarter of a cent to all the charities. Then we might get something done in this country, and not have 90% of my fucking donation money going to advertising for more donation money.

Fuck charities.
>>
If all 27 million unique 4chan visitors bought a pass Hiro would never have to maliciously redirect phoneposters ever again.
>>
>>21581
Oh, and another fucking thing? Fuck large corporations selling more units by saying they'll donate a percentage of the proceeds to the bullshit charities, and then making more money than than that percentage so they turn a profit off the misery of others. Fuck the super market asking me if I want to round up my change to donate some money to the Save the Children foundation. Fuck this corrupt symbiotic relationship between for profit institutions and non-profit institutions.

I should point out that I don't know how to feel about artists on Patreon, whether or not that should be the same thing. I would very much be in favor of artists receiving some sort of stipend for their work and don't think that artificial scarcity brought on by paywalls is a viable business model so maybe shit like donating to artists as if they were a charity might be worth keeping but fuck. Fuck man, I'm not going to claim I have a perfect solution, I'm just pissed the fuck off.
>>
I gave you a hundred bucks back when I was employed Jimmy and now you send my NEET ass emails whenever you need money
>>
>>21596

Artists do not do work with any intrinsic value. It isn't like a coal miner or a factory worker whose work actually produces things of real physical use that in one way or another provides the means to the basic necessities of people.

The value of artists work is inherently subjective. They make as much money as their work is popular and valuable to people.

However, they cannot put a certain value on their work. Like, a glass of water has the same utility to every person. But a given shadbase pic does not have the same utility to every person. So shadbase cannot put shadbase pics on the free shadbase market and compete with all the other shadbases out there to produce the highest quality shadbase pics for the lowest price. He can only get what he can get.

It isn't charity, it's just a product with no fixed market value theoretically possible.
>>
>>21148

But I already do.
>>
>>21613
Okay, that makes sense. Disregard all the shit I said about artists then. I was just thinking of donations in general and thought of a counter example.
>>
>>21630

Additionally, what you were describing above is just socialism. Not necessarily full socialism. But "use taxes... to give people welfare" is a socialist concept.

In the social democracies of northern europe they have shit like that. Although they don't outlaw charities, it's just people have a lot less need for charities, because their welfare system actually works.

>>21148
but that's what I have done
>>
>>21638
I'm aware of that and don't fear "socialism" the way a vampire fears the cross. I acknowledge that linear programming loses out to capitalism in every conceivable way so I definitely wouldn't wish full on communism on anybody, but... Man I don't know, I'm just bitching about my feelings I guess. Philosophically I view human dignity as very important, and I think of begging as a highly undignified thing to have to do. Whenever I see Jimmy Wales asking me for my Wikipedia Shekels I cringe so hard I have to describe it with a colorful metaphor. But when I see somebody dying because our social safety nets failed them, because they got shot in the spine and can't work anymore, because they got some disease that has a cure but they can't afford it, because they want to help save the environment, whatever, when I see one of these people begging it makes me angry because there's just no other way to get money for these sorts of projects without perverting them into being more marketable.
>>
>>21668

Charities are the only thing private individuals can do to ameliorate our broken welfare system. Individuals cannot get enough will together to counteract the corruption of all the money going to politicians who will ignore the suffering poor in favor of helping their donors, so charity is their only recourse.

If we could fix the welfare system, the charities would disappear. But if we criminalized charities, it would not cause politicians to fix the welfare system.
>>
>>21668
Personally, I sort of see our existence as an engineering problem, and political philosophies are different attempts at optimizing this system. The key difference between the different approaches, to me, is which variables they choose to optimize for (at the cost of which other variables)

I also feel like all political systems need to take into account the fact that we're all driven purely by egoism. Your political system can only work if everybody who participates in it does so because he believes doing so will be a net win for himself.

Capitalism is pretty good at making people believe the latter, which leads to more participation and hence domestic output overwall.
>>
>>21682
Understood. I was concerned with a symptom and not with the disease, like being angry about a fever and ignoring that the fever is an immune system response to try to cure the infection. You've put it into context that makes a ton of sense to me. Thank you for your thoughtful posts, SomeWhiteKnight.
