Were there any mods for this game that got rid of upkeep and increased the unit limits? I always felt that you should've been able to have more dudes than the game let you.

The engine doesn't handle a lot of units that well. You start getting pathing delays where all the units move slow because too many paths are being calculated. You see custom maps like Azeroth Wars or Greece get laggy late game because of this if there's a lot of players still alive with big armies.
