Can we make a separate general for Persona 3 and 4? I'm not against that fandom, but it's kind of off-topic when discussing Shin Megami Tensei: Persona. Especially because nobody even talks about the actual game anyway, but just headcanon stuff.

I wouldn't call P3 "tightly" connected to its predecessors, but it's got connections and is clearly in the same universe. For that matter P4 is bound to P3 even without Arena. You actually go to Tatsumi Port Island and you meet or see NPCs from P3.

All the persona games are interrelated, but it's important for the series future that it never feel like new titles are getting weighed down by all the old lore, characters, and history. Each game should be able to strike out on its own and do what it wants. Within reason of course.
