Why haven't you fucking written anything today anon?
>>
>>92005223
Because I spent all day on the flowchart again. 1 week out of 13 charted, about 5 choices. A lot better than the first version which had a million useless choices right from the beginning in an effort to increase player agency, but would've made replays annoying as fuck. Yeah you may want to choose whether you want Vanilla or Hot Cocoa, but that doesn't change anything in the scene. It's a one off.

Jokes on you! I've written today!

Because, just like everyone in this thread, I'm a lazy, worthless piece of shit and my only skill is crying that I could have done things if I wanted to, but I never did anything worth shit in my life.

I don't know, I think I can draw kind of okay. It's not as good as my crying, but I still count it as a skill.

Dumb renpy question #98971:
how do I assign specific transform for the sprite when it's first shown, but not when it changes expresson/pose? I.e. say when the scene is empty and it shows up, it rides in from the left, but expression changes just with fade? And the next time it shows up on the empty scene it rides in again.
Is there a way to automate that somehow, I ain't writing that shit a billion times.

I am so fucking going to make one now, i got nothing else to do anyway.
I can make a text based one in C or a graphics and text based one in HTML/Javascript, only problem is, i dont know where i can get the graphics...

because I'm too embarassed to ask an artist to draw lewd thing for me.
>>
>>92050948
It's not really a bother to be asked, you know? Just ask first what sort of things they're comfortable drawing (say, ecchi or straight porn; hetero/yuri/yaoi/futa) and go from there.

It's giving specific descriptions that bother, I'd probably just say something like "Have this dude/girl half naked" and then leave the rest to the artist.

That's a sign that the threads should stay dead but people can't take a hint.

>>92083962
I'll be writing more posts in a similar vein soon. For now it'll probably focus more on development in general rather than reviews.
>>
People could talk about their ongoing projects, try to form teams for new projects(beats Tumblr roulette), or post snippets of ideas to get a feel for a potential audience. Of course since no one here actually develops anything this is pointless. Especially art-wise, which is all that matters. You can tell yourself people will appreciate your writing if it's good/shit on it if it's bad all you want, but if you're hoping to wow people with your writing alone these days go into the trash and write an actual novel with descriptions. It is nothing more than a framework for graphics/interaction systems which are the actual meat of games in the first place. It is barely butter on the bread. Actually get enough done so it can act like the crutch it should be and maybe you'd get those who can put in actual content to come along.

Agreed, many of the more famous writers in the japanese VN industry also have written LNs, graduated in literature, draw influence from books, and so on. It's like most people involved in EVNs read a couple of titles and decided they'd make something great.

Seeing as we actually have something fresh to discuss for a change, why don’t we take advantage of it?

To begin with, I think you’ve missed the worst piece of terminology in the entire medium, that being “visual novel” itself. Everyone who hears it replies with a blank look, and asks “So, like, a comic, or something?” A visual novel isn’t inherently more visual than a book, in that both only use sight. The term doesn’t cover the aspects of sound, electronic rendering, and (not always), consumer interaction, which also separate VNs from the traditional novel.
On top of that, the term itself is unwieldy. “Motion pictures” was swiftly truncated to “movies”, and “video games” are now just “games”. Unfortunately, we’re still stuck with “Visual novel” or “VN”, neither of which exactly rolls off the tongue.
In addition, VNs aren’t even close to novels anymore. Since NVL is largely out of fashion, the VN experience is now more akin to a film script, or a play (the latter being more strongly supported by the common division of VNs into scenes, rather than chapters).

The only thing worse than VN was “OELVN”, which has thankfully been forgotten by just about everyone.
>>
>>92079941

I’d also like to point out flaws in your own suggested replacements. While “linear visual novel” makes more sense to those familiar with the medium, it assumes the reader is familiar with the practice of branching in VNs. To the uninitiated, it’s still just as incomprehensible as the current term.

“CG” is basically a term all to its own- no one ever expands it to computer graphic. “Event graphic” falls prey to the same flaws as CG- after all, isn’t everything that occurs in a VN some kind of event?

Finally, the terms “ADV” and “NVL” are really only in common use by developers, so the entry barrier is less of an issue. Additionally, the terms “novel” and “adventure” are already two words which are likely to see use inside the medium (“My VN is about adventure”, or “it’s just like a novel”). The three letter versions help to distinguish the terms, whilst also avoid lengthening each to “adventure style” and “novel style”.
>>
>>92115175
>>92115438
To be honest, I don't think changing the term is enforceable or likely to make the genre be taken seriously. What I think would help would be more games about things that aren't teenage girls on heat.

Maybe moms on heat, working for the police department?
>>
>>92115980

Oh, I certainly agree. And to their credit, many EVN devs seem to be moving away from the Japanese high school setting. We just need some of them to finish a project
>>
>there are people who honestly believe that this many evns would exist if katawa shoujo wasn't created
shame on you. ks started a trend and now people are jumping on the hypewagon. it's a good thing. in 5 years maybe someone will make something that's not a highschool romcom
>>
>>92117784
It depends on how you look at things and who you ask: for some people Re: Alistair influenced a lot of people and made them try to make their own otome - you'll also notice that some of them call every VN otome and don't even know that it's just a sub-genre.

There were a fair few creators before KS was even in the works. It's true that a lot of people will have been influenced by them but for some of us that's not the case.
>>
>>92119452

I can't think of a single one worth anyone's time, to be honest. Unless Christine Love was pre-KS.
>>
>>92119543
She started doing stuff before KS, though I'm not a fan of Don't Take It Personally at all and I've not played the ones after that, so there's that.

I'm just saying EVNs have been going on for a while before KS, regardless of their perceived quality.
>>
>>92120124

Ah, I see. That's certainly true. That said, people's ambitions seem to have grown exponentially since KS's release- which is obviously going to lead to a lot of failed projects, too. Still, a handful of them seem like they might at least make it to demo.

(Also, I've never played any of CL's games, just going on what I've heard about them).
>>
>>92115175
I didn't miss it, I purposefully omitted it. I agree it's not the most appropriate name, especially when you consider there's another medium called "graphic novels." I've also encountered the problem of explaining it to others, but I don't think any name is going to be able to explain the medium succinctly in a few syllables.

The terms focused on in my post either make a small change to a complex idea (VN -> linear VN) or are referring to comparatively simple things (footer textbox), hence they can double as descriptions. An entire medium is too complex to be reduced to a word or two without lossy compression.

This makes it difficult to construct a knock-down case against "visual novel" and without that the adoption of any new term would likely be spotty. Then you still have the same problem of an imperfect name, plus a new term and a load of effort expended. I think partial solutions are okay.
>>
>>92120124
>>92120307
all i'm saying is that the sudden boom in evns is due to ks. yes there was stuff before it, but not a lot. now we even have a general.
>>
>>92123253
A dead general at that.
