When the hell are we gonna get a good new Tales of the World game? The wait from ND2 to ND3 to RM1 to RM2 to RM3 have all been roughly two years each, but it's approaching four years now since RM3.

They did make Twin Brave, and Reve Unitia is coming out soon, but those aren't 'proper' TotW games and are a lot more limited in scope. I would've thought they'd be eager to make a new crossover game for Vita or something, but apparently not.

sorry for making a statement that interrupted the clearly valuable handful of posts above it

I can't decide what game I want to play.

Part of me wants to play a FF9-style jrpg with fixed character classes so I don't have to minmax like I always end up doing in games like, say, Disgaea.

On the other hand a game with customizable characters means I can create parties that exclude the characters that annoy and bother me.

Part of me wants to replay Wild Arms 2 and 3 because I could never finish either one despite loving them both.

I'm torn in at least 3 different directions here!

Kingdom Hearts is a game where you really do have to "git gud". Keep moving around, learn enemy patterns, get out of the way when they're attacking and then beat the crap out of them when they're open. You went with a magic build, so use magic. Keep cure mapped so you can heal when you need it, and remember that enemies can knock you out of the cure animation (until you get leaf bracer). Magic is mostly ranged, so try to stay away from enemies. Practice your spells with Merlin so you can learn how the spells move and when to use them. If you're having trouble with boss fights, give Goofy healing items before the fight. He'll burn through items pretty quickly, so don't keep them on him all the time, but if you're having trouble keeping your HP up in a big fight, Goofy regularly throwing potions at you will be a big help. The game will get easier as you get more skills and figure out what to do with them.

The questions Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie ask determine level growth.
Dawn = need less exp per level before level 50, need more exp after level 50.
Twillight = need more exp per level before level 50, need less exp after level.
Midday = exp per level remains constant throughout the game.

The Sword/Shield/Wand thing determines stats and what order you get skills in. Picking wand also gives you two extra MP that you can't get if you pick anything else, Shield gives you an extra item slot, Sword actually does affect the difficulty a little, it makes all the enemies in the game slightly tougher.

To be fair, equipment minmaxing for stat gains is largely irrelevant to a normal playthrough. If you want to actually be fully efficient you have to do a level 1 run until you get all of the best equips, which is unreasonable for a casual run.

It is not that bad, you can stop time for 5 or 10 minutes and it only take 1 EP, large enemies all give 2EP, you can kill shit non stop until they're all extinct.
It is not the time limit the problem, but how quests and some areas are affected by time, like there is an area in the first town you can only enter at midnight to 6 am. Some quests can only be done at certain hours, so you have nothing to do but wander around finding new quests or kill things until you can do them.

That said, it's designed that way intentionally, to be a short game with lots of replay value. Tons of things carry over into NG+, and you know a lot of ways to be more efficient while also experimenting with different orders of doing things.

people will probably think I'm trolling when I say this, but whats so great about the Final Fantasy series? they're some of the most boring, repetitive, uncreative JRPGs out there, and aside from setting the bar for other developers to improve upon, they've done nearly nothing for the genre. all the games were great for their time, but that's it. they've aged terribly, had some *decent* remakes (and that's being generous), and have some terrible casts that are only memorable because they wear outrageous outfits and bitch about their insecurities for half the game, yet its somehow considered 'character development' when they realize just how fucking pathetic and annoying they've been for the 70 hours you've had to sink into them. i really don't understand

7 and 8 fit the description you're giving pretty well, and I don't like them much. Most other games in the series are excellent though, and haven't aged poorly at all. 3, 4, 5, 9, and 12 in particular are all excellent at what they go for.

it was basically a single player MMO. grinding for mats, doing tedious fetch quests, with a mediocre story tying it together prominently featuring cute girls doing cute things.

which is fine, but not as a primary plot point.

the combat was standard JRPG fare, with the item twist, which was nice. I feel like I never used items in JRPGs, but I did for these games.

They're very good, yes. Xillia 2 is a game where equipment is mostly an irrelevant afterthought, but the cameo weapons stand out as being excellent and extremely noticeable with their effects.

Of course, you don't really have much use for them after you get them unless you intend to do NG+ runs.

I'm not on unknown. Hell, I just got the hot spring ending (why they couldn't take turns is beyond me) and am saving the true ending for last before hitting NG+. Or save the true ending for NG+. Either way, I need more grade and have both the coliseum (the last round of which I cheesed via Reverse Dolls just to unlock the extra shops) and Illusionary Darkness (fuck Shadow Muzet) to tackle. The weapons might make things easier but considering the components...not sure. For christ's sake one of them's asking for a Blue Sephira!

Gagharv games, especially AToV have bad translations. But they're so horrible it's hilarious. Kind of like SAO Hollow Fragment.

Why are all hot spring scenes the same? I did enjoy it (Gaius' zipper face) but it kinda sucked for the boys. Graces STILL hasn't been dispatched for me. Relative newcomer to Tales (only played Xillia/Symphonia and started Phantasia) so now I've got one hell of a backlog - hope the hot springs scene is better there.
