Let's talk game/programming design AGDG.

Is there a tried and tested method of implementing "perks"? Assuming a turn-based,grid-based RPG, with various perks such as "attacks inflict double damage when out of mana" , "move twice as many tiles when HP is lower than 50%", "character self-revives just once per combat encounter", "being attacked in melee inflicts status effect on enemy attacker", etc.
There's a lot of different things and systems being influenced, from damage to movement to status effects, so I can't exactly keep all the perks stuff in a single place. How do I keep the code from becoming a mess? Is there a better method than going all over the existing code and adding various "if" statements like

Yeah it's good. It's similar to Python, so it's easy to learn and use. It's fast enough for almost all situations, I've never run into any problems using it. But if you ever do run into slow downs from it you can use GDNative with C++ for better performance.

use perks as components that manipulate existent values in the parent object, example:
object:
int stamina = 10
health = 100
perk:

then all you need to do is keep those component perks updated. a better way is have an attribute = base_attribute + bonus and have the perks manipulate only the bonus so you have the base attributes safe, it helps when you add multiple perks that modify the same attribute

They're both low-res pixel art, but HLD has a certain polish to it, while the other game looks like shit.

HLD has good colours, the other game uses a really ugly palette.

HLD has no obvious anti aliasing, while the other game does and in such low-res game it makes it look cheap and as if it was made in mspaint.

It's literally as if the devs of that other game said "HLD has 1 pixel long limbs, lets just copy that" while they missed the whole point.

As for Trend and Target Audience analysis it can be useful for visual design and how those effectively market your game to the right audience.

While designing your individual game mechanics around it can be very dangerous as succesful games dominate their respective market in the manner of a pareto distribution, they pretty much get all the money and potential customers while any competitor gets scraps at best.

A reason why people kept yelling indiepocalypse for a while, even though a game can be good why should I buy a relatively obscure game that looks and plays like every other platformer out there when there're well known games like Ori and the Blind Forest or something.

Sure they are important parts of the production process. My point was that skyrim didn't just come together by years of iterative design and programming. Its features however did. But probably even before pre-production, they had a pretty good idea about what they wanted to create. I used skyrim as an example but you can substitute it for any creative work, apart from true art perhaps. Although true art is usually also a culmination of initial idea + studies on techniques.

If you want really neat looking bumpmaps on organic designs, then sculpting is the way to go. Also if you need really detailed bumpmaps for characters.

There is a 2.1 -> 3.0 converter. It's not perfect, but it should help with porting to 3.0. I think the biggest things that wont port easily are shaders, audio, and 3D stuff. Most nodes still work the same, and GDScript will still be the same, there's just some additional features to GDScript. Many function names and node property names were renamed, but I think the converter is supposed to handle those.

Completely different things, basically. (Googling this would've given you the same answer)

Quixel suit is mainly for making normals from scratch, creating generic sci-fi panelling and so on. You can also make normals from photos (would not recommend).

Substance is for making materials and PBR textures. You bake down maps from your high-poly onto your lowpoly and drag-and-drop and paint on your mesh.

Make sure to understand the difference between Substance Painter and Substance Designer, they're for different things.

i doubt that gamemaker checks for collisions when no collision code is present so unless GM is that stupid, collision event does make object check for collisions every step automatically (i think it's literally just place_meeting(x, y, obj) that gets executed).

i used collision event of player object with wall object to show error - it got triggered when my own collision code fucked up and player overlapped with wall. you can do everything yourself in step, so i don't think there's any point to use it.

The animations for the swing and the activation (and form) aren't nearly complete at all I want to put blue flames in the side lanterns but the Type A(fterglow) mechanic works as intended. You gather enemy attacks in your bottle and when it is full you take a deep drink from it to enter Afterglow mode which gives extremely high damage and for a few seconds after activation converts nearby enemy bullets into high value point items. The mode is short lived and the swing has a 14 second cooldown between uses (which can be shortened faster by actively grazing). Type A has no moth dust (bomb) so the swing acts as a more aggressive style of defense and eventually offense. Type B(asic) will be traditional bomb with damage. Sorry for the poor webm quality, I still can't get them right.

I won't be making DD16 but I am pretty set on showing an extremely updated and more engaging demo for DD17

Usually to get "two sided" planes like that there would be two planes exactly the same size and position, with opposite facing normals. Then each can have a separate texture or material. I've done this before for solid objects, but never an object with deforming or simulation, so I don't know how it will react.
