I love the idea behind "Saihate no Ima". Both the complicated nature of the game, and the fact that the game's writer actually gave up on it partway, really took me in. ...that anecdote isn't well known in Japan, though, so don't tell people I said it. Just say it's a rumor you heard through the grapevine.
There's a well-known story in Japan about how after Kanon became a big hit, the president of Visual Arts told his team to make a similar game, and that game became "Sayonara o Oshiete". One day when I was having drinks with [Sayonara o Oshiete assistant writer] Nagaoka Kenzou, he made the boisterous statement that the game was also inspired by CROSS†CHANNEL, and that made me love "Sayonara o Oshiete" even more. CROSS†CHANNEL was of course released years after "Sayonara o Oshiete", so for the latter to have been influenced by the former, Nagaoka-san would have to be either a prophet or a time traveller. Thinking about it, he's actually probably both.
As far as "Isaku" is concerned, I was simply a big fan of the game in my college years. In fact, my first game "Tsui no Sora" was heavily influenced by "Isaku".

Yeah, I just finished Insects and it was really meh.

Bullying (and violent coercion) is pretty boring in general. It takes the same form anywhere in the world. All this 'absolute corruption' stuff comes from too much idolizing of psychopaths and trying to make crime seem a lot more complex than it actually is (e.g. Hannibal, Death Note or Monster). On the other hand, in places like Communist China, simple coercion & shaming worked against people who you would consider as intellectuals. SubaHibi is pretty cool in how it does the scene itself, mirroring Zakuro's mental state by not making it a full H-scene & just having lingering images and breathing sounds. Any lesser writer would have squeezed the melodrama for all its worth, but her breakdown is played extremely ironically in the denpa stuff, which makes it more terrifying. Also fits with her character, which was established as a naive romanticist from the start. In other words, she did not break down from the bullying, but from her own naivete.

In that sense, I didn't actually have to do all that much work as the translator to research and understand all the highbrow references in Subahibi, since SCA-DI already did a great deal of work explaining the concepts that he was working with before publishing the original game in Japanese. You can take Subahibi's success in the Japanese market as evidence that SCA-DI did a good job of making Subahibi easy enough to understand for the average reader in Japan, despite the difficult concepts he was dealing with. That being said, I did make sure to familiarize myself with Wittgenstein and his works (although only the Tractatus seems to be relevant to Subahibi), and I made sure to do my research when I came upon various references that I didn't understand at first, but I'd be lying if I said that I went out and read the full works of Nicolaus Cusanus. And of course, I don't have a degree in either philosophy or English literature, so it's possible that I butchered some of the philosophical or literary references without even realizing that I was butchering them, but I put in an honest effort to be realistic with myself about what parts of the game I understood and which parts I needed to do more research on in order to properly understand, and then I put in a great deal of work in order to figure out the nuance behind those more difficult sections of the original Japanese text so that I could convey them accurately in English.
