he doesnt have traditional projectiles but he is very much a zoner, he has options that control most of the screen coupled with really good unorthodox movement that can make it very hard for many characters to get in on him

his combos are also fairly simple, so being a good faust is more about controlling space and knowing how your opponent wants to approach to deny them

Not really, her wind mechanic doesn't exist in GG.
I guess Venom could do the trick. He has the billiard balls that remain static until activated so it's slightly similar to the spears.
Another possible choice would be Bedman, who leaves marks after his specials and can activate them with another command, allowing him to throw the same special from a holographic self.
Last but not least there's May, which is the cute character and has some unconventional projectiles which vaguley remind me of Rachel's frog.

They actually do have a common theme with them. Each one has an unpleasant first experience with awakening to emotions.

The OG Valentine was actually emotionless but unable to perform her assigned task due to simply not being strong enough for it. This caused her to awaken to her first emotions which were frustration and rage.

Ramlethal was meant to be disposable from the start, hence why she looks the least like Aria, and has a lot of power with no real technique in how to use it. However, she awoke to the full emotional scale long before Xrd Sign and tried to hide it because "Mother only loves useful tools". Her first emotions were confusion and fear of abandonment.

Elphelt's whole thing is that she was given all emotions except love from the start, but was also given the notion that she had free will when she was pretty much made to be a slave from birth to death to rebirth. The Universal Will effectively made a sentient life form with no free will, or to have a desire that can never be fulfilled. Elphelt herself being unable to be sure of what, to her, was genuine or manipulation is why her first "real emotions" were despair and a desire to die.

They're all connected because Valentines are pretty much made to suffer as a necessity.

Yeah other than looking slightly like Aria, they don't have a shared visual theme. But they do represent the theme of finding ones own reason to live. It goes:

The original Valentine is meant to represent apathy and frustration, with her final answer being death. This is the start of the journey.

Ramlethal is fear of the future and self doubt. She was only able to free herself because she came to see herself as an individual. Not a smaller piece of a bigger power.

Elphelt was pit against something she could never truly fight herself. She knows what her own desire for the future is and represents the struggle to attain it. The theme of marriage also fits into this.

Jack-O is a second chance. As Aria she rejected resurrection for fear of her own sins. She could only be reborn to a better world when a known desire for the future was fought for.

Guilty Gear's overall theme has been "Why do you fight?" Each Valentine represents a part of this journey to answer that question.

not a lot of characters rely on microdashes at all for combos, aside from ramlethal being the most reliant in the game on them. most microdashes in combos are slight optimizations. for example leo can do rekkas rc 5k cs air series or microdash 6h microdash 5k cs air series for a bit more damage midscreen.

Jam's j.S is really powerful, but it requires her to be lower in the air than her opponent. If you're on the ground 5K should stuff it if whiffed. If you're in the air, Sol's j.S should stuff it first if you react quick enough. 2HS can be good if you catch her using the overhead card, but be careful if it's charged.

It feels really rewarding when you finally start beating people online. All the new characters are basic bitches. Jack-O and Raven are the worst of all. They're bad for the game in the same way SIGN Elphelt was. Even Bedman's gameplan is pretty simple. Jump back and toss some balls. Tech beyblade every now and then.

Ky and Sol actually have to play a fundamental game though, and have to adjust in matchups more. Not to mention how much conditioning they have to do to get anything out of their pressure. Bedman is gimmicky and requires you learn setups but don't mistake that for him being some high IQ character. Don't need to condition anyone either when you have jump back ball and yrc task B.

As long as your character doesn't have to deal with multiple 3-7 matchups, it's fine to play your favorite mediocre character instead of a better one. I think the only exception is if there's a better character than your favorite who plays extremely similarly (i.e. Ram and Millia), and you plan on attending anything bigger than locals. The key thing to know about Slayer, is that he is a monster in every sense of the word. Physically, mentally, and most notably, he cannot understand certain human traits and concepts. The one that comes up specifically is morality.

The other thing to know, is that he is not from our dimension at all, if you're familiar with the concept of planeswalkers, then it's basically that; a dimension hopping traveler. It's implied that he might have been a king in his realm because he was so strong that he killed all others of his kind. Although this was never expanded upon and the exact nature of his immortality is left ambiguous.

Basically he came into GG's world because he noticed that the crusades were happening, and instantly took an interest in Sol. In fact that's who Frederick got his alias "Sol" from. Slayer won their fight, but decided to stay around to see if he could get strong enough to defeat him one day. In the meantime he grew fascinated with humanity but needed a constant source of blood as it was his food. Unwilling to kill innocent humans, especially when the Gears were already doing a pretty good job at that, he got an idea.

Slayer had two motivations for founding the Assassins Guild.
1. As a way to get fresh blood for sustenance.
2. He wanted to understand the nature of humanity. While giving humans the ability to govern themselves when morals weren't enough to touch problematic figures.
Slayer also practiced etiquette as a desire to live as humans do. Basically he's the reverse of Alucard from Hellsing, he knows that he's a monster, but only wants to indulge himself as one when he feels he earned it against a strong opponent. This quest to understand morality had grave consequences and ultimately failed. As the Assassins Guild naturally attracted some of the most fucked up people imaginable and Slayer had a real "hands off" style of leadership.

War orphans were recruited by kidnapping because there were plenty of them around. This is how Millia, Zato, and Venom all became assassins.

In Millia's case, she was unwilling to become an assassin but had natural talent in it and even attempted suicide several times to escape having to kill to live.

Zato was more or less uncaring about it, he merely wanted to become an assassin with Millia so he could be around to protect her. As you know, this ends very badly.

Venom actually sucked shit at being an assassin and was about to be killed as one of the guild's "Mistake Recruits" because of it. Zato stood up for him and said that he'd figure it out with one more chance, which he did. Venom saw his life as debt to be repaid and started to harbor an extreme resentment towards Millia for her relationship with Zato and the fact that she had the ability to be an assassin.

Eventually Slayer met his wife Sharon, fell in love and retired from the Guild, leaving leadership to Zato. Learning that he cannot understand morality, but he can understand that he doesn't understand. He's been "merely observing" since then, although his commitment to his "retirement" basically makes him the Michael Jordan of GG. He can't fully stop.

The rankings are a bit of a meme unless you're a solid orange/pink. I don't think it takes characters into account so if you play subs you'll tank. I float around blue and green but don't really mind. The only time it comes into effect is when people are bitches about losing to you being a lower rank and they get off a cab because of it.

Interestingly enough, he can understand love because he can understand hate. And hate is something he can understand because he has the capacity for anger, which is a non complex trait for survival. This also suggests that it may be possible for him to come to understand more human traits, however unlikely.

He's not just sitting around waiting for something that has no possibility of happening. He can even fully understand things like poetry and artistry, albeit with his own slant on it.

For example, most characters tend to pity or try to help Baiken in their win quotes against her. But Slayer actually tries to encourage her self destructive behavior because he sees some kind of poetic beauty in her laser focused, but misdirected quest for bloody, visceral revenge.

Another interesting thing is Eripmavs D. Yraid memoir's which also implies Slayer came near the Dawn of Revival and stayed during the Crusades. I feel like GG of all games should teach you quickly to be conversant in left and right sides because so much can happen so fast, burst, and cab switching. It's definitely an obstacle and maybe when you're first learning some combos but it should quickly be gotten over. Good habit in combo training or straight training dummy is to do it x amount of times forward and backward.

Set the dummy to tech the moment it can, the beat counter also goes grey if they could tech. Character specific combos are odd, but its literally just trying it. Finding out something doesn't work on someone, then changing that part (or a preceding part) so that it does work.

The game is playable up to 7 frames of delay on PC, on PS4 its a different story though around 4 frames is most peoples limit. There is an inherent delay on PS4 of about 4 frames, with PC this can be reduced to 1 or so frames with settings. If you want to practice inputs, you can set a delay in training mode. And yeah the more delay there is, the more about prediction the game becomes.

Try and get a set with someone good, but not too high above your level. Its hard to practice stuff you've learned if you can't get a hit in, but if you play people below your level you develop bad habits. Watch high level matches and make sure what you've been practicing in training mode is what you should actually be doing. And by high level matches, I mean Japanese matches.

Also, sometimes its hard to notice improvement. Especially in quick anime games. Just focus on one particular set up or combo that you've been learning, and make sure you're landing it in matches. Eventually everything starts coming together and you're just like, "oh shit! That dude was bodying me last week and now I'm taking rounds and matches off of him."

Just keep at it. I used to lose convincingly to one player when I started over and over, but now I can win about 1/3 of the matches against him. In longer sets it starts to go below that since he starts adapting to my habits faster than I can, but it is a fantastic feeling none the less.

One note or precaution on this: online play is not Japanese play. The shit you learn and are educated by watching the footage "should" work but there's a lot of stuff you don't see people do because they know their opponent could punish them heavily for doing it. So while it's good to watch the play, you must also keep in mind what someone online is likely to do as they might not learn much from Japanese play. Also the top players tend to play a certain way and this game lets you play a character in many different personal styles that you will have to adapt to once you come across them. So the advice is definitely watch the play, a little at a time and take notes, but also recognize the flaws in your game such as anti-airs or losing neutral too easily.

This isn't the most correct way but I really like the way this guy explains what he's looking for. You don't have to watch the whole thing and he doesn't try to get everything right, but it's one way of going into things without getting hung up on shitty discords or docs put together by attentionwhoring westerners.

She's not as hard as some of the other "weird" characters, but you can't play her like you would Sol or Ky or other straightforward characters unless you want those little houses shoved up your ass.
