That game was lick a fantasy Cossacks. A shame the studio died before they could finish it.

Also, page 9 in 13 minutes, at this rate, we'll die in 20 minutes. That's too quick!
>>
>>188074913
It was probably never really in the works.
>>
>>188075172
It was, and it did came out, but apparently, the devs only did a small part of what they had in mind.

At least the AI is over, so you can play, and it's a decent challenge, but it tastes bitter.
>>
>>188074913
Soloing whole armies as a hero was fun, but random level up bonuses ruined the game for me. Especially in campaign.
>>188075172
The devs planned a trilogy.
>>
>>188069341
There is. What usually happens is you get a Wehraboo going "rate my groB germanium" thinking they're the first to do it, only to get told "seen it before."

The Wehraboo either then goes okay and tries to spice it up, or goes on an autistic ree spree about "muh sjws" while calling /gsg/ leftist cucks and throws around shitty r/the_donald memes to spam the thread before it all gets deleted, at which point they start reeing about sjw mod cucks.

Guess which one is more common.
>>
>>188075362
Honestly, I don't think I ever used the heroes. Back then, I just wanted a game with undead, and I saw that this one had werewolves as a playable unit, so I picked it.
I don't regret it, it's plenty fun, even if the AI is a bit brutal, even if it's poorly optimized, and even if it feels empty.
>>
when's 1.8 for stellaris? Haven't played since 1.6, anything worth looking forward to?
>>
>>188077241
Rumor is that it'll be in October.

Quite a lot to look forward to, such as machine empires (in a separate DLC but who's counting), a feudalism civic that makes it better to have vassals, democratic parties based on factions, and an authoritarian influence buff. There are also a variety of other tweaks that you could get in a mod, such as the ability to have closed borders as a default policy.

Most importantly, missiles are getting buffed so that they can track multiple targets, and should become viable.

Most most importantly, the core combat issues aren't being fixed at all, and the entire game will still revolve around getting an economy big enough to make a fleet big enough to wipe out the enemy in a single 1v1 doomstack encounter.
>>
Why do you guys continue to play Stellaris with all the complaining you do about it?

Hey /civ4xg/ would you be interested in taking part in the /vg/ League 9 friendlies?

For those who don't know, the /vg/ generals get together bi annually to play against each other in a heavily modified version of Pro Evolution Soccer with teams consisting of the varying memes and aspects of each general, which gets streamed on a smashcast channel for everyone to watch and meme on.

The /vg/ League 9 will be taking place around November/December, but friendlies have been announced to take place between September 16th and 24th.

https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//vg/_League_9_Friendlies

/civ4xg/ did take part in the last /vg/ league in June on autopilot with tactics made by an anon who has since gone on to become verified so that /civ4xg/ has a better chance. As such the team will need a bit of updating regarding the roster and music.

Team page: https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//civ4xg/

I don't think I can play RTS online. My favorite part is when all the defenders are passed by the swords, and your troops are free to rampage the town, murder the peasants, and burn the buildings.
Online, most people ragequit with a "gg" once their army is down.

Is Beacon of Liberty worth taking if you aren't also playing with Agrarian Idyll?
>>
>>188089171
Depends, what's your ethos look like?
>>
>>188089565
Right now we're looking at Materialist/Egalitarian/Militarist.

I tried playing the Pacifist way, with Agrarian Idyll, but then I found out that Egalitarian Militarists are great for warmongering -- and it's lame to just expand so slowly.

But I still want to farm some Unity, so... I dunno. I hear that the Parliamentary System civic increases Egalitarian attraction, is that true?

Nostalgia makes me actually really like the music, but I'm sure for a first time player it'll get annoying real quick.

I actually really liked Caesar III. I feel like the big thing will be how annoyed you get with things like wolves, and actually getting houses to upgrade properly because pathing is kinda weird

What should I specialize my first city into? I'm thinking towards tourism, but there's also some good mineral deposits and along with I'm going to need a university if I do build a factory heavy city.
>>
>>188090382
I mean, I guess I'm asking if you recommend it. Because, if that 15% isn't going to be worth much at the beginning, I could always go with something like Technocracy and adopt Beacon of Liberty later in the game, when I have some Unity-producing buildings constructed.
>>
>>188090141
thanks, good to know. Still a little annoying that I need to build so many temples at a time, but I guess they want you to make a high-class temple and Senate area
>>
>>188090608
I would wait until you get the third civic tech before you select beacon of liberty, it sucks during the first part of the game, but gets better has you go on. Although a spiritualist has an easier time getting unity then a materialist empire does.
>>
>>188090784
I went with Materialist largely because I wanted Technocracy, but I agree with you -- it's better to choose Spiritualist until 1.8, which will allow Synthetic empires to assimilate newly-acquired pops. I'll make that chance.

So, which civics would you recommend for a Spiritualist/Militarist/Egalitarian empire?

I've started a new game and it's working now.

So, in order to afford Extremely Adaptive, I've taken Sedentary and Wasteful. Would you recommend another negative trait, instead of Wasteful? With Egalitarian it's only a +10% increase in consumer goods, but I'm curious if there's a better option.
>>
>>188091093
just buy it anon, good game and good company
>>
>>188094120
i will in the halloween sale or something
>>
My personal experience if you do have utopian abundance working, you can take solitary, sedentary and maybe deviant since utopian abundance cancels out any negative you get from an faction pop that's unhappy.
>>
>>188090616
You can build grand temple or oracles (basically small temples but for every god), but they cost marble.

Also, if you're on a peaceful map (can't build fort) you can neglect Mars. You can also have festivals (in the advisors screen) to make gods happy.
The lastest patches let you turn off the gods.
In the following games, gods are changed to be simpler to deal with. Emperor has only three gods that can get upset, and while you can't build temples for them, you can easily buy them with gifts (mostly goods).
>>
>>188094985
Hrm. I DO have Spiritualist; that would very nearly cancel out Deviant's effect.

Kind of the same here, but I'm not even sure how to git gud with them. City building and expansion already have me stumped. They seem to be fucked on going wide until well into the game due to the +150% expansion disapproval. And going tall doesn't seem too feasible either with the prohibitive Pearl cost on Garths (even with the -40% reduction from an Allayi governor) if you want more than 6-8 tile cities in multiple cities.

they won't immediately but likely will eventually when war in heaven starts. Another AE will likely also ask you to become their bitch, you can decline or not, and third option is to join the league of non alinged planets, basically all the empire that dont join an AE become a federation. Or you can choose to join no one and stay independent. If you're powerful enough that's generally the best option, league of non alinged is a good choice too. Generally joining an AE sucks, they are require different things (eg half your minerals/energy, not being able to conquer anything, etc.)

Keepers of Knowledge just agree. You take a 25% hit to research but you're fine otherwise. The only benefit to an EO is that if someone is dumb enough to attack you, they absolutely will come to your aid.

What's the best ship classes mod for Stellaris atm?
>>
>>188124484
Right now? Naked corvette spam (no upgrades, just the default corvette you start with) due to tech costs being ridiculous. The AI with its single doomstack simply can't handle getting bogged down by an unending corvette spam that'll slowly whittle their shit down for like 1/10th of the cost of their fleet.

1.8's throwing that shit out the window though so probably Cruiser/Battleship spam.
>>
>>188124484
Holy fuck sorry. It's 5:22 over here and I'm dead fucking tired.

To answer your actual question; Improved Space Battles. Lets you build the Titan (the Battleship breaker FEs get), as well as adding a Leviathan class ship, a Dreadnought class, and a literal fucking Death Star along with a ton of super ships (including what is basically the Star Forge).

It's also the mod that most custom shipset makers make innately compatible.
>>
>>188124792
Not that anon but is that why I'm getting fucked nonstop? Do large ship classes seriously not matter? I keep losing mixed fleets versus small little shits.
>>
>>188124908
Right now, yeah. Tech's just not cost effecient. That's been changed in 1.8 though. Cost for tech upgrades is a 16% upgrade instead of literally fucking quintupling.

All a shitload of Battleships really do right now is act as a deterrent (jacks up your fleet power ranking which AI DOES pay attention to) unless the Prethoryn Horde shows up. In which case outfitting them all with Tachyon Lances will absolutely eat the swarm alive.
>>
>>188125038
Ugh. I'm assuming this is the case for total conversion mods too like New Horizons? Thanks.
>>
>>188124905
>with a ton of super ships
Does it also make them behave well enough in a big formation?
My main gripe with the kitchen sink supership mods I've tried so far is that the formations just don't seem to work with so many ship types and huge ship sizes.

I've been getting the hankering to play Civ again. Don't feel like dropping the shekels on Civ6. So I'm curious if there is a mod for Civ5 that creates just a massive map. The huge maps in the base game are small enough that when I play 12 Civs, I've met four of them in the first 10 turns. I want just a massive map. Any recommendations?

The devs implanted a bug that made your worker do jack shit if the game was cracked.
And the game was very hard, because as a fucking ant, everything is better than you if you are not a million.

It was kinda a dwarf fortress with a 3d interface, with RTS gameplay for your army.

You set up a list of priority for your worker, like tending to the eggs, repairing or building the nest, ect. You select what egg the queen produce, and you select zones for foraging on the surface, and usually get fucked everywhere.
No material, your nest room crumble, no food, your soldier die one by one, best first, then when winter come everyone not in the nest die, and those in the nest die if not ennought food is stored.

for example,
Web are the best material on ressource/size ratio that you can find, but if the spider come it's fucked for your workers. Baiting them with some soldiers to give time for your worker is doable, though. grass is plentyfull everywhere but will fill up all your granarys space for few food points,

The other races, termites, tisserand ants, and wasp have way better base stat than you. Bigger creatures are here, and can fuck you up or save you. caterpillar and snail are easy food, salamander can come right into a fight and fuck up the two army entirely.

The army and scout are directly commanded as squad, like a RTS. You got those that split acid, exploding one gorged with acid, big headed that can block tunnel, lot of shit that required micromanagement.

Hard fucking game with slow developement where you can go from well to dead in five minutes, but great.
Got chill music, too.

I'm having some trouble with my hyperdrive. My ships don't go the speed they should. I have the Equinox Jumpdrive installed on all my military ships(with sufficent power generators, of course), yet some ships go only 15k when they should be going 23k. One of my cruisers even goes 26k which is faster than anything I've researched.
I haven't played the game in over 2 years, am I missing something or is this some kind of bug?

ok, I checked every single ship and it seems one of them didn't get a complete refit. The shipyard was short on resources and didn't replace the old hyperdrive. Never seen that happen before.
Also the cruiser going faster than 23k has a fleet admiral on it who probably has a 10-15% speed bonus.

I think I prefer my 'boisterous bruisers' build to my 'despotic slavers' build, even though they function pretty similarly. They don't have as much mineral income at the beginning, but they're also not instantly despised by their neighbors and newly-conquered worlds don't immediately descend into rebellion.
>>
>>188210451
What does "boisterous bruisers" mean? How do you play it?
>>
>>188212187
Egalitarian/Militarist/Spiritualist instead of Authoritarian/Militarist/Xenophobe.

I'm doing just as much conquering, but it's actually easier because my elevated living standards keep all of my pops, native and conquered alike, really happy. Heck, oftentimes my conquered pops are treated better in my empire than they were in their old one.

My old build was Authoritarian/Militarist/Xenophobe with Mining Guilds and Slaving Guilds.

My new build is Egalitarian/Militarist/Spiritualist with Parliamentary System and Nationalistic Zeal. I took the later to give me a similar border expansion to the Xenophobe that I had been using.
>>
>>188212831
Interesting. What's your tradition order?
>>
>>188213561
Right now I work to fill out Expansion, open Supremacy for larger borders, fill out Harmony for happiness, less unrest, and the Paradise Dome among other benefits, then I finish Supremacy and go for Prosperity. After that... It varies depending on how the game is going.

The real fun of this build is in waging war without being a bad guy. Sure, your opponents hate you, but the rest of the galaxy loves the fact that you're Egalitarian, and you're newly-conquered worlds are practically celebrating now that you've democratic prosperity to their beleaguered population.
>>
>>188213916
Between Spiritualist, Harmony, and elevated living standards (go for Utopian as soon as you can afford it) your pops reach max happiness pretty easily and their productivity goes through the roof.

Get Civ4 and load it with one of these mods:
>Rise of Mankind a New Dawn (good all-around improvement from the base game; in active development)
>Realism Invictus (if you're more realistically minded but not fully blown historyfag)
>Rhye's and Fall (if you're a fully blown historyfag)
>Pie's Ancient Europe (if you're a fully blown historyfag, but you have an itch to scratch in regards to Ancient Europe)
>Sengoku (if you're a fully blown historyfag, but you have an itch to scratch in regards to Japan)
>Fall from Heaven 2 (if you're a fantasyfag; I recommend the MagisterModMod tho as it's into semi-active development and is lore rich)
>Caveman 2 Cosmos (if you're a true autist who likes an inordinate amount of stuff and mechanic complexity; in active development)

You're liable to find more stuff in Civfanatics, but that's the stuff I can recommend in good faith.

if you want to know how to riftborn military, your navies should purely be upgraded protector schematics and hunter schematics
the protectors should be filled with as many H-field accelerators as possible (to the point where you have no engines), while the hunters should have as many guns as possible
since the riftborn ships are stupidly specialized and hilariously overslotted, you should have more than enough damage for a fleet with only a few hunters; if you have four or more protectors in each fleet, the fleet's speed will easily move in the double digits
this is obviously very resource and CP intensive, so improved strategic extraction tech and CP tech are your highest military priorities after getting upgraded protectors and hunters

stick away from huge maps; too large, meaning little interaction in the first couple tens of turns
if someone dcs halfway through you can easily just save and remake the lobby, the only long loading screen is worldgen at the very beginning

as long as you have good world settings and faster speed settings it's fun; adds a lot more nuance to the game when everyone knows what they're doing
>>
>>188275504
The worst thing about Cravers is that you can't even snowball since their depleted planets are useless.
>>
>>188278098
by desyncing I don't mean someone disconnecting, if you were referring to me. The desync starts to cause errors or people to drop right out of the game, and while you can keep reloading the lobby, that gets real annoying and adds a lot of time to an already slow genre (for multiplayer at least)
>>
>>188279426
Yep. I also feel like if you fight them, you have to do significant damage because otherwise you'll always have to be watching your flank, because a declaration of war could always be one random turn away. Makes me feel like I have to obliterate the cravers, which takes a ton of time, and you don't get much out of it.

So what is the gameplan with them?

Containment until you become strong enough to snowball through their stuff while maintaining a fleet to keep cheeky neighbors from taking advantage of your war?

In my current game I lucked out, the Sophons and Vodyani are between me and them, but they've already wiped out the Unfallen. I'm doing a decent job building up my empire but since I'm aiming for a military victory I'm going to have to deal with them eventually.

Hard to say. In my last game, while I spent over 100 turns trying to completely destroy the cravers once and for all (which I did accomplish), 3 other factions, the sophons, Horatio, and Riftborn all made an alliance. Together, all 3 of them couldn't really be fucked with. I went 100% all out on military to see if I could dismantle them somehow. I had like 16 22/22 fleets fully upgraded, and that was just enough for me to defend everything I had and also come about 4 systems away from killing the sophons. Unfortunately, their alliance produced enough science that they won the game by turn 220~/300 (normal speed), and I lost anyway.

Anyway, to end my blogpost, I'm not sure. In my example I got so wound up killing the cravers that I didn't really have a way to win other than killing everyone with the ships I amassed to kill teh cravers. There was too much to take and kill to stop them from eventually getting science/economy victory. I guess you could just constantly bribe them for truces whenever they try to fuck with you, but if you're ever caught with your pants down, you might not have enough to truce with them again.

SC2 and Grey Goo are very recent compared to the heroes wave. Try Age of Empires 3, who killed its serie so bad they resurrected the second game instead of making a fourth one.
>>
>>188289169
never played 3. Thought it was just like 2 but in a later era. I remember my brother played it and also discarded it completely, so I never gave it a shot either. Still, AoE3 was what, 12 years ago?
>>
>>188289290

Nowadays, it's returning to normal, with Grey Goo, Cossacks 3, and a few others one, but RTS is sadly still struggling.
>>

>>
>AoE3 only came out 2 years after Frozen Throne

>>
>>188289290
Age of Empires 3 removes the rock ressources, and replace it by "prestige", which is more or less experience. Every time you get 1 000 prestige (by killing, building, destroying, over time, or with caravans), you get to build a card from your capital (ressources, passive bonus, units).

The terrible idea is that every civilization has one capital, and that all the capitals level up separately. So if you like to play with the French, Paris will be leve 20 while London will be level 5, which means grinding to unlock everything.

And other than that, the game has a lot of bad ideas :
>smaller maps
>more ressources yield
>hard limit on how many units you can select

Which is a shame, because it had a lot of good idea. For example, if you order an infantry unit to attack a building, they'll throw torches at it instead of just stabbing it, and you can train units per group of 5 instead of monopolizing the whole building to train one asshole.
>>
>>188290348
Ew, that card thing sounds awful. I didn't know what you meant, having played WC3 but never seen a card system before. I already thought maps in AoE2 were kind of small, especially in like a 3v3 map, I can't imagine them being even smaller, must've been real cramped all the time.

Also, there wasn't a cap on selecting units for AoE 2 right? Why the fuck would they ADD one for AoE 3? That'd be like Brood War allowing it after vanilla, then SC2 putting it back to only 12. Seems so backwards.
>>
>>188290806
>I didn't know what you meant, having played WC3 but never seen a card system before
What I mean is that before Warcraft 3, most RTS were pretty simple : explore, expand, mine, crush the enemy's army, drive them before you, hear the lamentations of their women, rape the women, hear the kids crying, adopt the kid to raise them in the true way, and win.
Starting with Warcraft 3, RTSes started including unrelated stuff, like heroes, cards, and whatever else.

>Also, there wasn't a cap on selecting units for AoE 2 right?
I honestly don't remember. I never hit that cap in AoE2. I did however hit it in Rise of Nations HD.

>Why the fuck would they ADD one for AoE 3?
For the same reason they have smaller maps : make it easier for slow end PC and make it more straightfoward, so that you can't hide a miner camp somwhere and force the enemy to hunt every unit for ages.
>>
Why did the person who made Vox Populi think that making the AI cheat EVEN MORE than they already do in the base game was a good idea?
>>
>>188291259
I'm confused, I think we mixed up selection limit and actual unit cap. In AoE2 I remember the population limit was 200 units. What I was asking was if there were a limit to the amount of units you could have selected at one time. Like in Brood War, you can only select 12 units at a time. I think in AoE2 there's no limit. And from what you said it sounded like they added a unit selection limit, which would be pants on head retarded.
>>
>>188291891
Because he wanted to "improve" the game.

And how do you improve the game when you suck at coding? By making it unfair.
>>
>>188292007
Selected unit cap in AoE 2 was 40 I believe and in the hd version this is 60.

Sins of a Solar Empire is the last good RTS to come out and it's borderline 4X. There's some other indie ones you can find on Steam but the ones I've tried have been extremely shallow Starcraft clones basically. No hero units, but just super basic

You really would not recommend Mastery of Nature? It saves a lot of time researching, and if the goal is to expand as quickly as possible, you can just wipe out the tile blockers, queue up buildings, and then throw your planets into a sector.

Never played MP. Used to play on immortal, won on deity a couple times. But I play vox populi now usually on prince.
>>
>>188320626
Early game wonders are pretty much impossible to get on Emperor, religion is iffy. You should pretty much pump any gold you're not specifically using for something else into city states. The ally bonuses are really strong. For diplomacy, you can pay ais to declare war on other ais to avoid war or to get them to move their army so you can attack them. Giving an ai a luxury for free early on could even give you an ally for the entire game.
>>
>>188320695
It's ridiculous how many bonuses the ais get in Vox Populi compared to Vanilla. Even on King you'll get your ass whooped so hard
>>
>>188321145
Yeah, I'm usually close behind on prince, but not hugely. King I get raped. Warlord I'm always just in front or close to the top.

If I put a Research Center down on a tile with a bonus to Engineering on it and then I put that planet into a sector, will the sector AI upgrade the Research Center into an Engineering Lab?

100 influence is nothing actually, I had an AI that really wanted to ally with La Venta and had like over 600.

Okay, won the game on emperor. First victory on emperor/ first finished game.

Ended up taking Gandhis land and building a fleet of nuclear submarines and sending nukes over to the Maya and Arabia. Alongside with stealth bombers. Arabia had pesky AI that almost caught up to my army. However that's nothing a few (or 20) stealth bombers can't solve.

Final thoughts: Netherlands is far superior to Venice for just about any victory type. Relying on trade routes is a crutch.

I was able to gain an obscene amount of policies and wonders to pick whatever I needed to boost GDP. With golden ages I surpassed 900 GDP for 30 turns at a time.

RTS killed themselves and the internet helped. The problem with RTS is that they're easily solved and broken down into a handful of strategies that counter each other, after that point it's just practicing the strategies until you got them down to perfection on top of having some decent micro. The internet and the natural tendency of people to tryhard just accelerated the whole process where we have games that are pretty much solved with only some minor details being discussed in a week or two.
Do you know why RTS were fun around 2000? Because the internet wasn't wide spread and you would play mostly with your shitter friends over LAN. This would lead to very unoptimized games where everyone just kind of made up a strategy on the fly or built tons of a single unit because that unit was cool and everyone had a chance to win despite being a shitter. If you went online with one of these strategies you just would get destroyed instantly and probably just rage quit the game forever unless you're hyper competitive autist.

It is obvious by now that Paradox lacks either the ability or the intention to make Stellaris gameplay engaging, and thus its post-facto rebranding as an RP game rather than a grand strategy game.

This is why the studio persists in shitting out "12 different chassis of Friend Robot" DLC, rather than balancing combat or Dyson Spheres.

Unfortunately, if the Paradox forums are anything to go by, the paying customer base in fact would prefer "Now u can name ur Yiff Kingdom ;)" updates over "Now megastructures are strategically relevant" updates.

Yeah, Rimworld is a bit specific. Its unpredictability makes for fun stories, but annoying gameplay.
Startopia is a pretty vanilla city-builder and relatively easy (no oxygen, and goods can be replaced by money), but the fact that it's taking place in space can fuck up your habits.

Yeah, the AI in ES2 is currently piss easy to beat. It was even worse at release, especially beam-only ship spam. Also if you're not playing as Cravers yourself then the Craver AI is or at least was the strongest AI by far and snowballed in practically every single game. Though even then the game itself was easy to win since the AI isn't intelligent enough to beat the player's system level optimization and bribing warmongers is also extremely easy as long as you got influence to spare for different goods.

This dilemma does show the flaws of paradox dlc policy. Diplomacy and war should be very intertwined game mechanics. But because they focus on a lot of small dlc's the scope of one dlc package is to narrow to adress the problem properly. This will result in endless bugfixing and game mechanics which are only loosely connected and probably watered down.

If you have the workers for it, then sure. It takes too much time and not much gained (no prod bonus like forests). If it's on a hill then a mine would be worth it if you don't have much prod, but other then that, I wouldn't bother. Better off focusing on setting up new cities near good prod spots and keep that one as a growth city for science later. You could also use an engineer to add prod if you can at some point.

Is it worth uninstalling Civ 6 and installing 5 just for the mods? Am I missing something if I play 5 instead of 6?
>>
>>188399124
you're only gaining things from playing V over 6.
>>
>>188399124
There's no obvious reason why you can't have both installed at the same time.

5 has worse overall mechanics, and constantly requires the player to do trivial math regarding, for example, whether +4 is better than +25% in a particular situation. However, it has had multiple years of post-release development, and with the DLCs it is more feature-rich.

It's also the most heavily tall-oriented game in the Civ series, and possibly in the entire 4X genre. If you feel as though you want to indulge in the evils of tall, and you don't want to roll with the Kuriotates, Civ 5 is your best optin.

FYI that's why your computer runs like shit. Windows needs free space as swap space, and it doesn't tell you how much it needs.

Maybe you should play the 4X game of life a little, so that you can shove a new $50 hard drive into your computer. Unfortunately it too is tall.

How do you go about it? I always feel like my units are way too weak to defend myself, and that I can't really even get it started. Explain.
I don't really see how "Adding a bunch of flavourful diplomatic maluses and causus belli" (which would fix diplomacy) is 'very intertwined' with "Buffing siege length and adding space terrain" (which would fix warfare)
>>
>>188409268
I think if you offer them 1 gold they'll go for it. It looks like a floating point rounding error that any decent programmer would have accounted for.
>>
>>188414429
I always rush borough streets and dust; most of your science gain comes from pillars of knowledge, and you get the most out of your pillars (and more efficient slots from pillars) by making honeycombed cells out of your cities
your first target in every tech era are arcana boosts and new pillar types; once you hit T3, dust also becomes a priority. you can grab the later food techs if you'd like, but i usually just make sure my cities keep growing with renewal pillars
since most of your income comes from pillars, i like to play tall; i mostly just keep a large enough army to defend my territory, since enemy cities won't be built properly to take advantage of pillars
the quest is of great import, as it will give you an amazing buff to your pillars during winter just past the midpoint, making you effectively better in winter than in summer if you've been able to steer away from bad winter effects
>>
>>188418992
doesn't rushing borough streets totally tank your empire approval, making your cities all hate you and working less effectively? Also lowers the amount of dust you output. I've never really tried to rush dust though, I always went hard science and got fucking demolished. What is your army makeup of? Any warlocks at all? What do you outfit them with?
>>
>>188419219
boroughs only tank your approval if you don't level them up; you should usually go for sewage system, but your number one priority in T1 is grabbing the fucking museum, since it covers everything you need: approval, dust, science, and districts. don't know why you think boroughs reduce dust, though.
other wonders are nice, but the only other super-focus one is the dust one and to a lesser extent the science one from era 3
your dust really starts to pick up in era 3, but earlier on it's important to focus since it'll let you maintain an early 2-3 pillars and get you early hero purchases (vaulters and broken lords are the stand-out governors for AM, but cultists are obviously the best as you should know).
as far as your army goes, i usually have it evenly split between the three faction units. telsem warlocks have great single target damage and can force people to engage them to guarantee they take advantage of ardent fire, ateshi zealots have aoe attacks in case you have to deal with quantity over quality enemies, and eneqa wings are ungodly monstrosities. i always build for as much life as i possibly can to make sure they can survive while they get ardent fire damage boosts, and i usually aim to assimilate either ceratan or faceless ones for access to good healing, which can help you ensure your units toe the line between life and death.

also, make sure you get the legendary feat that gives you the accessory that grants free counter, because that shit is scary good with claws (which both telsem and eneqa get)

What I mean is that while you have 2 districts up, you're at like -20 disapproval until one finally becomes level 2, and that can dip you below content, and below content you have a dust penalty and some other stuff.
>>
>>188420794
yes but if you get sewage system you don't care about that
also, luxury boosters exist, and the shrine of auriga and museum of auriga can easily help you get high approval and level up your districts quickly
>>
>>188421192
seems like there's a ton of T1 techs I really need. Luxury, Strategic, Mill, Seed Storage, EMpire Mint, the boat, the unit, the merc market, all that shit
>>
>>188423118
you only need the boarding vessel if you start on a coastal region, and even then you won't be using it until it becomes irrelevant because settling on the coast is a shitty idea as ardent mages. it just invalidates so much space around your city center that could instead be used for expansion and pillars

my usual era 1 with ardent mages goes
>mill foundry
>language square (rushing quest gets us extra units and some resources)
>seed storage
>public library; if you are a god and start in enchanted forests or something similar, get geology instead and come back for this
>empire mint; interchangeable in queue with library
>either luxury or strategic if my starting region has resources
>if i get unlucky with luxuries or someone beats me to the museum of auriga, i get sewage system
>merc market once my stockpiled dust hits around 280
>ateshi zealot if i am under threat, or if i can squeeze it in
i usually end up researching previous eras as ardent mages simply because so much stuff is nice to grab
>>
>>188424503
huh. I'll give them a try again. I'll see where my hiccups are. I always played Drakken, and I felt like I was always doing better in literally every facet when I would play them. Stronger units, stronger starts, more FIDSI all around. I dunno.
>>
>>188425125
it'd make sense, since literally everything the ardent mages are good at is tied to pillars and spells; they have a bit of a rough start, but as long as you play simcity well enough you'll snowball out of control in dust and science by the time you pick up the dust pillar

War should be an extension of diplomacy. If you want something from somebody and they aren't willing to work with you to get it, you wage war on them and force them to give it to you. Basically, war demands should be diplomatic demands and vice versa. The fact that empires right now have absolutely no recourse for dealing with their neighbors except by declaring war on them is proof of how utterly disconnected diplomacy is from war. Because all the options that should be in diplomacy are only available through war right now. I.e.
>remove this outpost
>cede planet
>liberate planet
And so on. Right now if some guy builds an outpost and takes up some systems I was eyeballing then I have literally no choice but to wage war on his ass even if he wasn't getting on my nerves at all. I have to go from peaceful neighbor to warmonger over some fucking outter systems because I have no way to just hit him up with a simple diplomatic request and offer to compensate him for losing the outpost.

well, I made it to about turn 110, but the Broken Lords are just too powerful. They have about 360 health and Zealots only do about 30 damage a turn, with level 3 titanium weapons. I just can't win with this race because they just can't win fights. I don't know what to do. I even use the spell to stun, and half my army dies just to getting counter attacked. the BLs army is just half stalwarts half silics.

I won a few fights, but I can't keep up with the insane costs of the titanium weapons, and not having the weapons makes me not even scratch the stalwarts. I have to bribe the fuck out of the BL just to let me live, and now I'm on the backfoot. How do you kill anybody with this race?

nevermind, even if i gave them literally every single thing i have including all my cities they won't truce, so i just outright lose.

Warlocks seem to get one shotted constantly and do little damage. Eneqa Wings I never got to making because they took like 12 turns to produce each. The stun spell didn't do anything because nobody does damage or can tank damage anyway. I guess I just fucked up everything some how. I felt I had a good start, but as soon as I had to fight the BLs that spawned right next to me for real, I lost in like 5 turns flat.

Maybe I'm just a shitter, but I just don't get it. Going dust helped a lot, i'll admit, but I still felt pretty weak.

Is there a good reason for war goals to be set at the beginning of the war, instead of the end like in every grand strategy and 4X game in existence?
>>
>>188436520
None that I can think of. They use warscore as a way to barter concessions anyway so it shouldn't matter whether you make demands at the beginning or end.
>>
>>188429771
The problem is more funfamental than that. I mean, in a naieve sense it's correct what you say that
>empires right now have absolutely no recourse for dealing with their neighbors except by declaring war
...but this misses the deeper problem that there is nothing to "deal" FOR. Your neighbour has nothing you want in Stellaris, beyond "I win the game by painting the map the most so I want his clay". Nobody has any strategic objectives. There are no good resources or tactical strongpoints to squabble over. No rich fertile floodplains 'in spess', no wonder-worlds of industrial or religious significance.
There are no TARGETS.
That's the deep problem with both war and peace in Stellaris. Everything - from pops to star systems - is so fungible that you have no *reason* to either trade or war.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the fundamental problem of the game is that there are no intermediate goals. You just go to war with people so you can inch closer to the victory screen.

This is also true. In order to make stellaris a decent game in my opinion a lot of mechanics should be expanded or redone. But I was commenting on poll wiz put up asking for a focus on diplomacy or war. Now this is probably not exactly what paradox is going to do but their dlc policy bars them in my opinion to truely fix things because of it's small scope.
>>
>>188447992
>Any value or wonder target would still be just a mean to take you one step closer to victory, m8.
Yes, and?
My point is that "Increasing the number of steps = good"
In Civ you 1) settle hills so you can 2) have hammers to go for Stonehenge so you can 3) get a religion so you can s
4) spam cathedrals for art slots so you can 5) cash great artists so you can 6) accrue tourism so you can 7) win a culture victory.
This is a strategy. It gives you reasons to DoW people at each stage: 1) get gud land, 2) force them to divert hammers to troops rather than wonders, 3) force them to deprioritise faith, 4) take someone else's great works / great work slots, 5) take someone elses' artsy cities for the GP points, 6) take someone elses' Eiffel Tower for the tourism points, 7) nuke anyone with better culture than you to carry you over the line.
Multiple, deep, varied, viable strategies make a game fun and replayable.

In stellaris there is one strategy, which is 1) acquire minerals so you can 2) build a big fleet so you can 3) win a blobbing victory.
It gets a bit stale.

If I run the game directly via exe I dont have any mods, If I run the game via steam I get the mods, but I am worried about using it with CreamAPI. How do I activate the workshop and still manage to run it outside of steam?

Presently there's no real ethic/civic combo that helps this besides maybe militarist since it makes winning wars easier. It's more about traditions. You'll want to go into Supremacy.

Does anyone else think that Paradox will stop supporting Stellaris soon? The game is just so fundamentally broken it can't be economically worthwhile to actually fix it with DLCs. My guess is one or two more shitty packs and then they'll move on to Stellaris 2.

>>
>>188521631
No chance.
I mean, I agree with you that it's fundamentally broken, but this is not enough to make it unprofitable for two reasons:

1) Stellaris' brokenness is not something you realise until after the first couple of playthroughs; there's enough bright colours and shiny things to keep you thinking "DUDE SPESS LMAO" for like the first 20 hours, which is longer than 90% of people play for anyway

2) Disgustingly, there seems to be a large number of people who are perfectly happy with the game being a strategic wasteland because all they wanted was a sci-fi roleplay yiffing simulator, and Stellaris is perfectly capable of being that

Expect 7 years of profitable RP-focused DLC and zero gameplay improvement

Well my hard drive ate itself. So I lost everything. Something I did not know and greatly pained me. Custom races are not saved to the cloud like I thought they were so I lost 80+ races and had to make new ones. That only took a week and a half since its was such a laborious process and I got burnt out since I give them back stories and histories.

But now that that's done I'm back up and running with a new game. Nothing much happened so far. Found some huge planets covered in huge forests that are going to cost me a fortune to clear. Then a greedy fuck ass got in power so now I have a -20% habitability and a -10% happiness which ruined my chance to colonize my fifth core world. This is the first interesting thing to happen so far.

Use the expansion planner. It's not perfect, but it does allow you to pinpoint which resources you need to find and mine, where they are, and assign constructors to them.
The AI as you've discovered gives zero fucks about how far away resources are, and it will happily build mines clear on the opposite side of the map and have the constructor limp back on reduced power, because it just doesn't consider how you're supposed to defend it, or even get transports to it. It just sees a res the empire needs and goes and drops a mine on it.
Shame, because it does a decent job of building stuff otherwise.

>How do I into efficient placement of mining stations
Build a mine on every possible source of fuel in and near to your borders, just to stop anyone else using them against you. Also vastly improves availability of fuel, and gives multiple redundant fuelling points.
Try to have mines in every colonised system for 'basic' metals - Steel, Lead, Iridium, Gold. Not critical, but definitely helpful.
Try to have mines as near as you can manage to colonised systems for every 'strategic' resource. Sometimes quite hard, but very beneficial.
Same for 'luxuries'.
Once you're happy with your resource situation, leave the constructors idle (or have them go picking up wrecks). If you spot an area which is struggling for res, you can always grab one and go looking for somewhere to drop a mine.

You don't need to mine literally everything everywhere (except fuel), but having sources of anything closer to colonies makes building things, growing pop, and making money much easier.

Stupid for 2 reasons: 1), any competent player can cheese runaway AEs to death anyway, so this is just a total casualisation sop; and 2) the galaxy becoming the Eternal Reich of the Awakened Reclaimers is a perfectly fine end to a game anyway. Why the player gotta win all the time? If AE dominion ISN'T a likely game-end state, where's the challenge? Just start a new galaxy, maaaaaan
> 2) De-restricting Ascensions
I'm usually the first to complain that "All playthroughs are exactly the same", but the piling ALL of the few differences that existed on Spiritialism did seem a bit lopsided. Also, what with Shroud fun being the only interesting reason to keep playing a game half the time, anything that renders the Shroud more accessible has to be good.
Hives remain boring af apparently
Adding yet MORE hyper-specific options to the species rights menu is just annoying. It's far too fucking full of useless meme options already.
> Megastructures

I don't understand why it's changed so you can only build one of them - if your game is lasting so long that you've got time to build 2, you are beyond the domain of balance and into the domain of 2600AD ultra-post-endgame RP already, so idk why Wiz cares whether you can build more than one or not. What I'd love is something like Endless Legend but in a post apocalyptic setting instead of a sci-fi but fantasy game.

I liked Anno 2070, but didn't like that I had to use ubisoft's uPlay to run it so I eventually stopped playing altogether. Never tried 2205. I'd recommend Anno 2070 to anyone who can stomach uPlay or who's willing to pirate the game.

I wonder how's the ambiance in their studio.

Pretty sure UPlay doesn't require you to be online at all times anymore, if ti ever did.

>Any post apocalyptic city builder or 4x games that are good?
Does Kenshi count as a citybuilder?
There is also Rebuild 3 if you can stomach flash tier games and I remember a game from Steam greenlight that was called ENDCIV, but I dont know what happened to it after greenlight shut down
