Of course it's sprite mirroring. Sprite mirroring allows to save ressources in the ROM, but it also means you have to load less sprites in the graphics memory. Initially for MM1 it's the same reason why MM is so symmetrical and I believe why his canon retracts into a hand all the time.
After making MM5 Protoman Edition, I can tell you that I genuinely believe that if Protoman (circa MM9-10) had been made into a playable character in MM1-4 it would certainly have a simpler design. It may not seem like much, but he uses more sprites, and is a lot less symetrical. In MM5 I had to load different pattern tables depending on the move, because I couldn't squeeze all the sprites into the allocated graphics memory, and loading a different pattern table in the midst of gameplay is something that's only programmed in MM5 by default.
Then, in MM10 Bass is even worse. And that's without even mentionning sprite flicker. That's why I believe neither would have been made like this were they playable character back then, it may not seem like a big difference, but MM (and X) are optimized as fuck.

BN1 is rough like MM1 but outside of a couple of annoying scenarios like the Powerplant, it's not hard and the bosses are the easiest in the series. The chip balancing is poor but it means that you can get some high-powered chips and program advances quite early in.

4 sucks and isn't very fun but I played it anyway because I didn't want to skip any of the games. I like 5 but the liberation missions make or break the game for most people. Regardless, I don't recommend skipping it.

You know what, i'm actually enjoying it a lot. More than I thought I would.

The bad part is the lag in some places, and the funny hit detection at times (especially with disappearing blocks and sprite platforms in general).

Otherwise I'm enjoying this a lot, some graphics look funny but overall it's fine and it does add some neat stuff.

Already played through 1 and now playing 2. I like that Metal Man and Bubble Man only take 1 dmg from the buster.

I managed to hack Wily Wars myself as an experiment and I got evil with some of the enemy placements. I also messed around with it to see if I could fit all of the weapons onto MM3's weapon select menu, and it does seem possible, but I have no knowledge of ASM. I only tried it with hex editing, which doesn't seem to be enough.

When Battle Network was announced, a lot of oldfags acted with the same exact pessimism as you guys torwards the cartoon. Granted, at least X series was going on an the Zero series was announced shortly, whilst now we're having literally nothing but think of the upcoming Mega Man as the new generation's Mega Man. Just how MegaMan.EXE was another generation's Mega Man, the generation that is now young adults shitposting here on /mmg/. Stay optimistic.

Protip for anyone who gets to Sigma Mega Man Xtreme (Not sure if it works in the original Mega Man X): Due to the way Sigma's jumping pattern works, the upper left corner is a sort of safe spot. So you can just hide up there, wait for him to start wall jumping then slide down, hit him on the way down and then scurry back up.
Also, during his second phase, his left hand (Right hand? From his perspective?) attacked me only once. Not sure what was up with that.
