Need your help, /dfg/. Got something weird going on in my fort, not sure if bug or if I'm doing something wrong.

So I have a pair of military dwarves in the hospital after a werebeast attack. Shortly after they were hospitalized, I started getting massive amounts of 'Urist McNurse cancels Give Food: No food available' spams.

Now I know I've got plenty of food in the fortress. There's a 497 stack of mountain titan meat sitting in the food stockpile. Some examination turned up the following:

>A dwarf gets the 'Give Food' job
>That dwarf goes to the food stockpile, stands over the pile of 500ish mountain titan meat, picks up 1 piece of meat, and then drops it again on the same tile
>Job cancellation notice is generated
>Looking at the 1 piece of dropped meat shows that it is now owned by the dwarf that went to go pick it up, not the dwarves who are injured in the hospital
>The dwarves who own the food come back later when they themselves are hungry, take the pieces of meat to the tavern, and eat them there
>Meanwhile my wounded dwarves aren't being fed!

I checked all the doors around the hospital, none are locked, and there are doctors moving in and out cleaning the patients and suturing and whatnot, so it's not a pathing issue. Is there some mechanic I'm missing here, or is this a bug?

Before I go in I'm gonna fuck with the raws a bit. Downloaded All Races Playable, will also get advfort.

I'm wondering how to give kobolds scales in their actual descriptions. I changed it in the raws but it won't show up on characters. Also removed KILL_NEUTRAL_REQUIRED and UTTERANCES.

Any other changes you guys like to make in the raws?

Yes I seriously think for-profit everything is a bad idea but I'm fine with it driving stuff like electronics and whatnot so I could scoop up some DDR4 ram and one of those 7th gen pentium chips for a couple hundred bucks, just keep that shit out of schools and hospitals and police departments kthx?

Which goes back to df actually: using the same worldgen (https://pastebin.com/898dLPQq basically) and everything else but going from an ivy bridge i3 to a kaby lake pentium + ddr3-1600 to ddr4-2400 made a really obvious boost at first and took a lot longer to slow down.

It's Friday Night guys: tell stories of drunked Dwarf Fortress antics.

One time I decided "I'm not really doing anything that interesting with this fort anyways" and had my miners breach the volcano cadera that was containing a horde of clowns. My only regret was letting a lesbian couple I had grown attached to get killed in the carnage. Sarevsh was a legendary Clothier and As was a legendary macedwarf who led one of my squads.

There are several factors that have contributed to making tantrums rarer. The first one is the replacing of the thought system with the emotion system. The emotion system just seems to be more player friendly than the thought system was. However, even though the emotion system made tantrums rarer, it was still fairly easy to get them, especially if your dorfs saw a lot of corpses in a short time.

A second factor is the inebriation effects implemented in version 0.42. One effect of inebration is that dorfs become fearless. Fearlessness means that they don't react when they see scary things, i.e. corpses, ghosts, etc. Since seeing death was one of the biggest sources of unhappiness, making dwarves indifferent to it certainly made the tantrums even rarer.

However, there are still lots of negative emotions that don't become nulled by alcohol. Being attacked, sleeping without a proper bedroom, not having access to recreation, drinking booze without a mug, using a water source without a well, etc are all examples of emotions that still affects a drunk dorf. All of those probably contributed to the moodiness of this axedorf.

Once they don't return, it won't be too long before you realize that an entire squad was imprisoned or killed, and you can then risk a rescue. Small/lone squads of dwarves sneak better, so sometimes it makes sense to send a single dwarf on a rescue mission, so you don't have to risk your whole army. Even if your dwarves aren't listed, you can still attempt a small-party rescue by sending a general purpose site raid, since the raid squad will always try to sneak first. Later we'll have more specific orders and options.
I cannot wait until I can send my squad of steel-clad berserkers to wreak havoc amongst the goblins and take loot and prisoners and stuff. It would also be amazing when playing a dead civ with no dwarves left, as you can help your population grow by rescuing dwarven prisoners and slaves, that might join your fort and work for you.

if you want to know which race is strongest, you need to rely on statistic empirical studies, rather than isolated anecdotes.

There's another factor here that's more important in the grand scheme, and that's the power of prejudice and bias as a driver for plot. It's a pretty ubiquitous story element in fiction generally, and in fantasy especially. Add to that the fact that IRL relatively small phenotypic and cultural differences lead to a lot of bias. Its deliberate exclusion in whatever DF's final form looks like would be a weaker story generator, and lead to radically different species and cultures existing in a harmony that strains credulity. I can't imagine that when Toady starts dealing with this aspect of the simulation directly that he won't naturally come to this conclusion as well and add some kind of mechanic for bias.

There's no reason someone from a hardcore "no slavery, no cannibalism, no torture" civ would view a "enslave all the things so they can torture our food supply to soften it up" civ member neutrally, but spit at a member of their own civ who took a barfight too far and wound up a murderer.

The only enemy we've faced is the menacing Giant Toad, which our trusty Militia Commander managed to defeat with his artifact spear. That was kind of fixed in .42 or .43, Toady made it so dwarves can carry an allotment of both as a workaround. I haven't really seen how it works, though, I always mod lead to make ammo and let dwarves use for training and combat. It sucks in combat but it's better than wood or bone, and is a great way to dispose of galena trash.

Unless you've done some modding or reduced the cavern layers in advanced worldgen, that's the second cavern layer. Tunnel tube, goblin cap and jabberer corpses are all visible in that webm alongside fungiwood and white cap, which eliminates both the first and third caverns.

That's just a waste of legendary soldiers. Unless you have so many that they can approach the beast faster than it can web all of them and then kill it in one or two shots, they'll all just die. Webbers don't give a shit how skilled your military is, webs are universally effective against nonwebbers and can't be dodged or blocked, and completely immobilize the webbed creature, and the FB will kill every webbed dwarf in a single attack no matter how good their armor is. They're an arbitrarily strong threat with a handful of arbitrarily strong counters.

In the Southern summer of 2004, my then-girlfriend and I were camped in a shelter near a rock climbing area in New Zealand called Flock Hill. It was a gorgeous landscape, sweeping grassy hills made famous as Rohan in the “Lord of the Rings” and glacial erratics from the final battle scene in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”

Itinerant climbers regularly blow in and out with the good weather so no one at the camp noticed late one night when a hulking black pickup rolled in or when its occupants set up a tent and passed out.

It’s a pity. Because we could have warned them.

The next day, they woke up to the wreckage of their vacation. The straps connecting their tent to the stakes in the ground were chewed out, such that half the tent had collapsed in on them. One hiking boot was found mangled 30 feet away and another was never recovered. The rubber around their windshield was shredded and their antenna had been ripped off and dropped in the truck bed. When they woke, the perpetrators – a group of mountain parrots called the keas – were gathered on their truck to inspect their work and drop branches on the hood from 10 feet up.

The truck left that morning and was never seen again. The rest of our time in Flock Hill was marred by these horrid little creatures, whose screeching call woke us up at 6AM every morning. Keas are large, menacing parrots recognizable by their brownish-green backs and a glint of sociopathy in their beady little eyes. In the moments before dawn, they crept about, silently tugging on tire spouts, pulling apart windshield wipers, and eating our side mirrors. My buddy Dan, whose van resembled a tank that frustrated attempts to rip it apart, even discovered one day that they had chewed out several hoses in the undercarriage.

It's interesting in hindsight and fun/strange/sad until shit comes to light later.

Usually pops up around the same time as Vinland Saga (god dammit you should already know what this is) and To You, The Immortal (like, you know how some stories start off fun and lighthearted and then get into the sadness? The thing that bothers me about the lack of racial prejudice in DF is the fact that it wouldn't actually be prejudice. In DF there actually are objective differences between humans, elves, dwarves, and goblins. Goblins especially really are driven to cruelty by their evil nature. It says so explicitly in the in-game description and if you make a goblin adventurer you'll see that you CAN'T make them merciful or self-controlled or altruistic. The fact that when you go to a dwarf fortress that has lots of goblins living in it, the goblins start killing people at random isn't a bug, that's just goblins being goblins, and that's not something that can change without changing what it means to be a goblin. So any semi-sane person would be eager to exclude such beings (who never die unless they're actively killed) from their society, as to do otherwise really would be similar to having a wild baboon living shoulder to shoulder with you, until it rips your arm off because you looked at if funny. But dwarves apparently have absolutely no qualms about treating goblins as though they were just green skinned dwarfs, similar to how any irl person who isn't a racist treats black upper middle class Americans as though they were just black skinned white upper middle class Americans. Despite what /pol/ might tell you, one is suicide and the other is reasonable, and you have to be willfully stupid to not tell the difference.

I'm one of the people you replied to and I should clarify that as far as I know, species-based prejudice won't be changed. The thing people are all in a huff about is Toady possibly not including more refined discrimination. For example, humans discriminating against humans due to different physical features, or the same but with non-human species.

What reeeaally bothers me is that the way he worded it implied that he would only not add it because he was worried about what other people think, an attitude that he has never displayed before. If he starts changing, removing, or adding mechanics to appeal to an audience instead of adhering to his own vision, I feel Dwarf Fortress will be robbed of at least some of its potential.

I kinda don't like the race-personality limits.

It feels like one of those tolkien-clone fantasy series with "hurrdurr muh big bad ebil race." I like how other species are, where there's defined cultural norms but they aren't hard limits.

Outsiders, drifters, and abnormal people make for more interesting stories (because of internecine conflict). Maybe because gobs are ruled by demons, their standards are set by their rulers, so that's how most of them think--but it shouldn't be all of them. That's boring.

Of course, I think a lot of this might get changed/randomized when the worldgen stuff for Myth and Magic happens.

That only covers how goblins who aren't members of non-goblin civilizations behave. But I have seen goblins who are members of dwarf civilizations murdering away inbetween chatting about the nuances of martial prowess or whatever. It seems that when a dwarf (or anyone else) disagrees with them in an argument they have a very strong tendency to get murderously angry and just kill their conversation partner. It can happen with dwarves too, but it's vastly less common.

sounds like something that only happens in taverns. personally, I just make sure to keep my booze pile separate from the tavern. I have never had any problems with gobbo visitors starting fights.

the bar fights and alcohol poisoning never occurs when people drink directly from the stockpile, only when they get served booze in te tavern. it probably has to do with how the tavern keep gives people too much to drink in too short time. it doesn't help that performers also serve booze.

Um, it would appear that mead is uncookable. I just made some mead so as to cook it into a meal so that my dwarves who like mead will be satisfied with their food, but despite having an unforbidden barrel with 4 unforbidden mead in it in a reachable stockpile (it has 4 instead of 5 because a dwarf just took a drink from it) mead does not show up on the list. This is quite annoying.

I worked on the Warhammer mod, made most of the creatures,civs and items. Haven't touched it in a long time though, might get back into it after the update. Wish I could do more than editing raws but I'm no good at anything past script-kiddie tier.

He's beyond being concerned that his game might be viewed as the racist simulator - it's a game where you can slash of any miniscule part of a man's body, for fuck's sake - he's more concerned with offending anyone for the sole sake of not offending anyone, and he's willing to strip out game functionality to achieve that.

I feel like it should be the power of the player to create and adventurer however he likes and play accordingly to those decisions.
that means that you should be able to create a lawful good goblin and try to play in a civ that is pretty different from you, and see how that plays out

Buut... that made me think on one thing:
how will making adventurers work and what restrictions will it have on the final update?
Right now, there's nothing stopping you from creating a bajillion adventurers from nothing and let them live in your fort, which breaks the game

in the same vein, what would be to stop you from creating a lot of good goblins and change the culture of gobbos with it? Sure, it would be boring af, but it's like the current system for grinding, it works

what are your thoughts on this /dfg/?

Isn't there a flag that'll build it in 32bit? Or can't you just get the same compiler in 32bit? The x86 architecture is fully backwards compatible in x86_64 so I don't know why you'd have to use a hypervisor just to build it on a x86_64 machine.

I'm building it with that Qt framework. Setting the -m32 flag and installing g++multilib doesn't mash well with the 64bit versions of the libraries I'm linking against, and I'm sick of googling answers for days.

Also, I'm pretty close to finishing it all so it ain't much of a hassle as I thought it would, it's just taking some time.

2/2 The lever pull failed! The bridge was built to Retract and not to Raise, and the goblins marched right into the main entrance, bypassing the cage trap filled corridor. They didn't get past the entrance hall, though.

It is now early Autumn 131, half a year has passed since the Siege of early Spring 131. The front bridge entrance has been properly installed. All told the siege took 10 lives and left 12 wounded, most of whom have recovered thanks to our Chief MD as well as our well-stocked hospital. Now, a cage trap lined hallway has been installed to capture invaders... we have already caught some Giant Flying Squirrels for food and leather, and some other flying friends....

it has finally happened. the giant strip mine I built my entire fort around has reached the first cavern layer.

I better begin walling it off unless I want "interrupted by cave creature" spam all the time. the shaft must go deeper, though.

It's not like the 2017 version of MSWord or whatever is somehow so much better for making documents than the 2003 version that you should need a many times beefier computer to run it. DF, despite its lack of optimization, is actually doing something significant with all those processor cycles and memory. But it seems that most software written after about 2005 just wastes resources because it can.

This is /dfg/, not your personal imagedump thread for stuff that has nothing to do with DF. Please cut it out. You could actually make a thread on /tg/ or /c/ for dumping pictures of centaurs or elves or whatever and it wouldn't be particularly out of place. Other people might even happily participate in it. But please stop using up all our image slots. We want to be able to post pictures that are related to DF in the thread about DF rather than having all the space taken up by you spamming unrelated pictures, some being of things that explicitly do not exist in DF.

Discussion of DF isn't dead though, not by a long shot. /dfg/ has always been relatively slow, with a few spikes of frenzy here and there. You can't honestly look at this thread and say there's no discussion of DF going on here. I went to the trouble last thread of pointing out all the DF discussion that would fit in the character limit after pointing out the spam, I'm not going to bother doing that again. If a spammer posts once every two minutes then we'd have to be posting once every minute to make the thread less than 1/3 spam. A thread which is posted in exactly once every minute will last about half a day before hitting autosage, and it would last less than nine hours if there were two discussion posts and one undeleted spam post every two minutes. /dfg/ has usually moved more slowly than that, not because nobody every discusses DF in it, but just because we aren't constantly gibbering about nothing.
