Watching the walkthrough of Skyward Sword, the silent realms were shameless copies of the TP tear quests but they were still done well. The music was nice and chilling, the visuals were trippy, and the guardians were fucking terrifying when they came at you. The time limit made you sweat too.
The imprisoned fights weren't as good but they still made me freak out a bit. The music and the height meter added that haste that got the heart going.

Will we ever get another Eventide Island? I really love that feeling of all your stuff being taken away from you and having to start from the ground up again. Eventide Island was too easy though, so far away from where you start so you've already gathered the knowledge needed to beat it with ease. I just got a Switch and Zelda BOTW a few days ago. It's pretty dank so far, but the weapon degradation really does suck. It didn't seem so bad at first but now that I'm trying to fight Guardians and other tougher enemies having your good weapons break in like.. 10 hits sucks ass, and using weaker weapons isn't even an option because you'll deal like maybe 1% damage.

Is there a reliable way to get good weapons? Like a weapons shop or something? I haven't found where it is yet if there is one. Trying to use the chests in the over world isn't that reliable because the loot seems random, or atleast random enough that you'll just have no idea what you're gonna get.

Find decent enemy spawns that carry good weapons. There's a skull rock at Cape Cales near the Muwo Jeem Shrine that I found had consistently good weapons. It's easy to reach and easy to farm. But breaking weapons is part of the game. You just have to learn to work with what you have.

Also, if you're going to fight Guardians (or any higher level monsters), get good at parrying. A perfect block (parry) will reflect a Guardian's laser, or stun a Lynel. It's the simplest way to deal with difficult encounters late-game.

When it comes to fighting guardians and then ganon, the game briefly becomes monster hunter. So you start off farming regular weapons. The stronger the better. Then you collect the materials for food with 'Mighty' in their names. First comes to mind bananas, thistles, razorshrooms, and salmon. Whatever it has, it has to be 'Mighty'. Then make sure you have some Major Test of Strength shrines unlocked. Something that helps is to have 'your' house unlocked (just look around in every corner of Hateno village and you'll know what I mean), so you can store some melee weapons there. I'll get to why. Then you head to all the major test of strength shrines and defeat the guardian scouts in there to collect all the weapons they drop. Don't use the guardian/ancient weapons in the shrines though. Once you have a good stash of guardian weapons, you go to the Hylian fields and that small light brown area in Akkala and kill all the guardians and collect all the materials that they drop. Then you use the materials at Akkala ancient tech lab (once you've unlocked it of course) to buy/craft ancient weapons and ancient armour. The full set of ancient armour upgraded to level two gives you increased damage with ancient weaponry. Then once you have fully upgraded ancient armour and lots of ancient weaponry, you're a killing machine that will rape all the guardians. Attack damage buff food on top of it helps of course.

There's only a few weapon types. 1H swords/boomerangs, clubs (function almost identically to swords), 2H weapons (swords and hammers/axes have NO difference in moveset), spears and 2H katanas (which barely exist). That's it. Technically five weapon classes, but more like three. There's no variety to use to begin with.

Yeah I also really fucking enjoy having to stop once per shrine and decide if any of my trash is less valuable than the trash in the shrine chest, meaning I open the chest, see what's in there, mash past the message saying my inventory is full, spend however long speculating over my inventory, then possibly throwing something away to open the chest again. I feel really bad for people with OCD that go for the chest mark next to every shrine.

It is absolutely the game's most glaring flaw.

IMO thy should've done what everybody suspected and wanted which was to have the Champion's stuff be unbreakable alongside the Master Sword and maybe the Hylian Shield. You have to go to significant efforts to get them and if you don't want them because you feel they'll ruin the game you can not pick them up or put them in your house on display. Nothing you can do about the Master Sword but I think thy could've tied it's powered up state and sword beams to you being at full health so it's only as good as your ability to not get hit or spam food

First of all the master trials give you a 60 strength 200 durability (practically unbreakable) master sword, but that still has the issue that when you get close to breaking it doesn't make sense to save the sword, you WANT to break it as soon as possible on the offchance it'll regenerate before your next fight, which is bafflingly stupid game design.

Second, that wouldn't be an issue, because you would be earning that unbreakable 60 damage sword as a reward for getting far in the game (at least 13 hearts in, that is) and completing the trials. I think it would be interesting to also scale it on beasts completed and have it start out almost as visually tarnished as Zelda put it in the pedestal, so it would be a 10 damage/20 against Malice or when fully Trialed sword at first and scale up 5 damage/10 against Malice for every beast beaten. All these are things I would have expected the devs to consider at some point in the game's long development but I suspect the reason they didn't is because at some point early on it was decided that everything would depend on durability to encourage variety (even though that's not how it ended up working), and nobody wanted to backpedal and rework big parts of the game by the time it became evident that this wouldn't work.

The only weapon you could spin with in this scenario would be the Boulder Breaker and if you've battled through the Darunia quest why shouldn't you be rewarded with something more than a medium strength two hander with no bonuses on it. In an ideal world I’d say the Champions died with their weapons and the weapon smith you meet in the settlements only has the plans on how to forge tem again. You don’t upgrade them with the fairies rather you bring materials to them and they bring the weapon closer and closer to what it was when the Champion wielded it. The Master Sword would still be tarnished and would need star fragments in order to be reforged. All the weapons would need multiple base race weapons and assorted materials like they do now. There's nothing wrong with that. All the weapon durability system adds is tedium. You want aesthetic variety? Fine, let me glamour my unbreakable upgradeable weapons to look like any weapon I take a picture of with the sheikah slate. Bam, problem fucking solved.

Shield variety works in theory because there is only one "class" of shield and they all have different stats, except in practice the only one worth using is the ancient shield and otherwise they're all on equal footing. Bow variety works the best because the highest-damage bows are multishots that lose out on pinpoint accuracy, but even if you don't get five headshots they do way more damage than single or doubleshot bows that land all headshots. If there were like twenty weapon types, then and only then would this weapon durability shit be MILDLY justified.

It also wouldn't necessarily be "like Skyrim." You know what other game had unbreakable weapons that got stronger throughout the game? Nearly every previous Zelda. And on that note, people hated durability in Elder Scrolls too and you're the first person I've ever seen bitch about it being taken out in Skyrim. It's like the one thing they did right with that abortion of a game.

Which they did exceptionally well in many ways. Weapon durability was not one of those. It was a mistake. There is no defence for it and you have failed to provide any, you're just being contrarian.

Weapon breaking would be more tolerable if they let you fix your weapons like in Fallout. If you have two of the same weapons and one is about to break, you can go join them together and it fixes it. All you have to do is go to a blacksmith to do this. It would also been better if there was a bar that showed you how much durability your weapons had, that way you could prepare before you use them.

I'd settle to say that BotW is a great game, it's just not a great Zelda game. It feels like a completely different game, just with Zelda characters/monsters. It's not always good to break away from the original formula, it might makes things feel fresh but you take away what made people love the series for what it had become.

I know for a fact that this would be one of the most beloved Zelda games to date if it had dungoens, more iconic enemies from the Zelda series and if the weapon degrade system was altered. Maybe make the weapons last 2-3 times as long, I never had a shortage of weapons and with enough korok seeds around mid-game I had more weapons given to me than I knew what to do with.

I understand what Nintendo wanted to do with weapons degrading, they wanted you tobe always on the lookout. But there was never an "Oh shit, I need a weapon! I can't really comment on whether or not BotW is a good Zelda game, because it's the first Zelda game I've played. I will, however, say it's one of the best games I've played in a long time. It was absolutely good to break away from the original formula, and I think it's a very solid Zelda game. Especially if you know and observe the history of the ARPG genre, it feels like a triumphant return for the series to front-and-centre, and I'm willing to bet devs like From and Capcom are going to once again be copying LoZ and Nintendo's refinement of all of their mechanics instead of LoZ stagnating in the past while everyone else moves forward. It has its flaws, undoubtedly, but the only ones that are actually notable are the ease/lack of satisfaction/overpower of flurry rush and the broken (pun not intended) durability system.

Now, it would of course have been even better if, for example, they had managed on top of everything else to finish making the main quest- It's very obvious that the Rito and Goron branches are unfinished, and that only Naboris was a complete or close to complete dungeon. BotW is pretty different from most Zelda games, but in many ways it's a return to the style of the first game. When they made the second game it was poorly received because it was way too different from the first game, and that was a lesson Nintendo took until BotW to unlearn. They dialed it back about halfway for the third game, which was well-received, so they have just rehashed that game over and over again ever since, the biggest notable change being that they started doing 3D rehashes of it too.

I would suggest at least emulating one of the 2D titles (the original and Link to the Past are good options) for the sake of context and videogaming history. What I was referring to in >>188047761 was that all modern high-profile ARPGs (like Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma and Monster Hunter, as well as most spectacle fighters) can trace their spiritual lineage to Ocarina of Time, and in the case of Dark Souls it clearly also drew inspiration from the older 2D Zeldas including the first one. Zelda is at the root of what is rising to become the clear best genre of videogames, but it hadn't really progressed much since Ocarina of Time either, until now.

Zelda I'm fine with, since we didn't get to interact with her during the main quest but I would rather Sidon, Riju, Tebah, and Yunobo get focus and development rather than the Champions. Since, you know, they're actually still alive and relevant.

Those theories don't make any sense. Nabooru spoke about male Gerudo being born every 100 years in OoT as if it was a well-established thing, and the Gerudo in BotW also mention that Gerudo males are born "rarely" or something like that, meaning that it obviously still happens. BotW just conveniently takes place during the time between the last male Gerudo's death and the next one's birth.

How long, hour wise, would you prefer a dungeon to be? Would you like a Skyward Sword approach to future game dungeons where you can return to them after you have completed them, and once you acquire new weapons, you have access to new sections of the dungeons? It would be cool to have more than one boss in a dungeon locked away somewhere. Some of them could be optional so players that don't want to backtrack aren't forced to.

a dungeon should be self contained so you're not forced to head back into it, and should take an hour or two of concentrated play. Any longer is just dragging the game out, there should be a lead up to the dungeon though, not just a "show up and get in" approach

I like the idea of exploring and then suddenly stumbling upon ancient ruins and finding a small opening, then finding out it's a dungeon once you enter. This could have worked with BotW.

Depends on the type of Dungeon.
If it's a traditional 3D Zelda dungeon then I think an hour/hour and a half is fine, maybe with half an hour's worth of optional content.
If it's a Divine Beast-style dungeon, I wouldn't want to be in it for more than half an hour, seeing as they're so small and samey looking. Naboris is the only exception because there was actually a little bit of exploration required.
If it's a BotW Hyrule Castle-style dungeon that's filled with optional content, multiple routes and tidbits that help build the world, then I'd be more than happy to have it be several hours long.
