Proper room movement, gdscript being slow is a meme, i'm rebuilding the A* map from scratch every frame, no lag nor memory leaks.
As for people who asked how will this be different from FTL, the answer is game modes, basic mode is classic FTL, premade ships only with unlockables(ships, systems, quests, sectors), custom ship building (for this mode) only unlocked after unlocking every ship. until i finish this mode i won't add anything new, but i'm making it with the intent of being fully customizable (to support sandbox mode)
i'm open for suggestions, still need a better name

We discussed an idea I had yesterday, I don't know if you've seen it.
What I had in mind was a compromise between full customization and something that poses a challenge.
Instead of having the freedom to entirely build the layout, only give the player the option to add predefined parts to their ships after they buy them.

POST IDEAS FOR MECHANOID JAM
I kind of want o make a game about a gattai mecha but I'm not sure how that would work gameplay-wise. Do you control all the 'pieces' at once? Only one? Or one at a time in different parts of the level?
>>
>>187724941

that's working as intended, how are they supposed to see the player when it's behind the building

like they're supposed to go where the player was, not where the player is, it makes them look like zombies

the player comes out, the enemies are slow to react and charge where the player was

i can make them go where the player is if i really want to, i literally just need to remove the system i have that fires a bullet at the player and sets the enemy target at that location

despite having good ideas and an intention to make a game, i cant find the mental strength to work on it alone. i think so much better when im able to bounce ideas back and forth with someone, and i work so much better when theres someone who can push me. its so frustrating because doing it alone feels more like work for me.

didn't change, overhead was actually from the physics, every room has 4 separate collision objects to check for overlapping, pathfinding still didn't cause anything, not that i'll ever have a ship this big.
>>187724432
i like that, i had something similar in mind, i just noticed that FTL ships never have a generator nor thrusters, it'll be a good idea to impose rules to build a ship that makes sense.

I'm thinking of having like...
>Starts with a Puzzle game similar to Magical Drop, Bust-a-move, or Tetris
>Then goes into a Metal Slug style thing
>Then into a short little JRPG
>then the finale is a 1 on 1 fighting game.

The whole thing is going to be a parody, and it's going to be really short (like 45 minute max) and it's meant to just be a crazy whirlwind of shit thrown at you at a lightning fast pace.

Thoughts? Anything to be worried about in a project like this?

Don't do it with parameters, simply divide your values you'd expose as parameters by Object radius inside of the material (no need to use Object Scale if you're using a sphere) and adjust them once for good.

It really depends on which country you are. If you are on China knock yourself out.

Yes, and the person can go and say "I didn't agree to that" or "I didn't read this point". There is no contract, you literally cannot prove he knew about it. While it would be a point in your favor, it would depend on judge.

Just to clarify, I wasn't implying that just because a story is added after the game development has started means it's not important.

There's a huge number of game stories that I love immensely. I do consider it a very positive aspect of a game, and think that the philosophy such as Carmac's "It's like a story in porn" is ignorant and infantile. However, the games with stories I love are so fond to me because the gameplay allows the writing to be enjoyed by applying context and depth, and a bit of added fun, to an already thoroughly enjoyable experience.

When sculpting characters in ZBrush, does it matter if you aim to create a T-Pose for re-topology and rigging? Also, do you create clothes after or during the process of creating a character if you plan to create more later? Yeh, it looks sfw and the art look like it would appeal to children. There's cute that appeals to grown ups too, like all the Pixar characters, but his style reminds me of things tailored specifically for children under 10, like pic related.
I'm asking because if his objective is to have something that sells, his art direction is narrowing his market down to a very specific niche (children's games) and if it's not intentional then it's a problem.
He does have a consistent and good style though, so that's a nice plus.

Why is it so rare that you see the creators of a game answer questions in the forum for their game or in the chat of their game being streamed on Twitch?

I have an idea why you should avoid that as a developer, but I severely doubt that everybody has the same idea as me. I don't think you want to be accessible to your playerbase because I feel like it encourages them to want to point out design flaws of the game to you, like they'll be actively trying to dissect anything about the game, no matter how superfluous the "flaw" may be. By being a mysterious entity that nobody can talk to, you aren't really in the mindset of being a critic on this individual's judgment.

I think it's the same reason why you don't meet your chef when you go out to a restaurant.

It's an easy fix though, just add overlaying text, you could even integrate it with the HUD somehow.
(E) Open popping up would have fixed your problem.
Also, get used to it, it's incredible how most users perceive a completely different thing from devs. There's a GDC talk about Sid Meier going through this, he explains how they had to adjust a lot of things for players, a very interesting one was that some of them thought a 10/20 chance of winning was better than a 1/2 chance.
>>
>>187753245
Players don't have time for your shit, and if you don't account for this, you are to blame.
>>
>>187754691
>>187754824
Yeah that's something I should keep in mind.
Honestly I just figured that someone playing would at least take the 2.5 seconds it takes to glance over the inputs but I guess that's asking too much.
Yeah a popup control prompt would be better but it was a jam game and it's long over now.
>>
>>187753245
>"next"
I think I know who you're talking about.

I've included a menu that describes all the buttons in the game and exactly what they do. Plus describing game mechanics. People STILL don't read it and just complain about not knowing what to do.

This is why every game has a tutorial level at the start. The only way to get someone to learn is to force them to learn by making the first level a tutorial. This isn't a bad thing of course, it can be an "invisible" tutorial that doesn't feel like a tutorial. But of course this is out of scope for jam games most of the time.

If you see what happened earlier you'll notice that the other dev reacted very well to the questions and provided the answers, no fuzz.
If devs know they are discussing with other devs there's no doubt that the feedback is honest and not shitposting from anonymity.

I'm unsure how to handle chloroforming little girls.

Before now it was an option in the dialogue.

But now I'm working on stealth mechanics, and I was thinking of having an item that's currently selected (like MGS, Dark Souls, etc) that you can "use". And if it's rope or chloroform, and you're near a girl, it'd chloroform/tie her up (with a struggling animation / sounds coming out that could alert others with a (randomized?) timer based on her/your stats I guess.

I'm unsure if I should do that and keep usable items to stuff like cans to throw (to distract), cameras (if I allow picture-taking mechanics for loli-tracking), etc.Or do that, and remove the chloroform option from the dialogue. That could work, but might reduce branching options. Like I could have the option but let it lead to the item-use action, but what if you want to give the user a more nuanced decision on failure? Like "Threaten her with a knife", "Tell her you'll kill her if she struggles", etc.Would it be weird if upon failure it went into dialogue like that?

If I leave it as it is in dialogue, then also having a real-time item you could use might introduce inconsistencies. Although having the dialogue one just start out the real-time loading-bar-style thing would still be kinda consistent. Still seems weird if it opens up a dialogue menu upon failing when you didn't initiate the chloroforming via dialogue though...

Any ideas?

>How should they react?
I don't know what variables you have but ideally I imagine it like:
If they're scared, they get more scared
If they're not, they can get angry or scared depending on how submissive their personality is
It also could make them immediately aware of you, while not alerting others other than the sound of the can, so you could throw a can on one girl among a group and get her angry so she would come after you to complain or kick your shin and so you successfuly lured her away from the group. If she had a submissive personality on the other hand the same technique would not work as she would only run away and or cry alerting everyone nearby
You could also use it to wake up someone
>>
>>187770756
Using these mechanics you could use dialogue to discover a girl's personality so you could take advantage of it

-i overwrote a file accidentally
+glad i made my first backup just minutes prior

still improving my workflow, i think i confused some people with the ship editor, i intended to make the custom ship layout available only at the start of the game (like character creation), then you just install systems like FTL, but i guess people wanted editing ingame (like Cosmoteer)?, i'm more biased towards the first idea but i can add a mode for those who want it, if i keep steady progress i may have something to show for demo day.

Don't worry about what other people say, do what you originally planned first. I like the idea of designing a ship first and then having to live with it for the rest of the game. You can always experiment with other ideas as you go and see what works.

>is lore a necessary thing?
Having a story is a good idea, even if it's simple. If your game is a roguelite with a ton of replayability you don't need to worry about the story too much, but still having something to wrap it all up in makes it feel complete.

The unfortunate part of that clash is that the lights are necessary from a gameplay perspective so the player can tell where they are in darkness and what Sam's orientation is. There was a developer interview years ago that stated that the whole reason for the design in the first place was to make it possible to tell because he has 3 lights on the front and one in the back.

The game has an incredible flow to it, though. The only part I really think failed was the iraq flashback. It becomes incredibly obvious that, as much as people want to give it shit for being a TPS, it is very much not mechanically able to support a true third person shooter sequence.
>>
>>187776308
I was one of the people in the last thread who thought customisation was a bad idea, but that's because I thought you (or the other guy maybe) was saying that you'll be able to choose where to place everything and being able to edit your ship structure every shipyard. I felt that was too much and would simultaneously kill replayability and lead to a bad meta with one optimal outcome. Randomization wouldn't save this either if the player was free to change things out at shipyards.

However, if it's only the first time then it'll be fine. Although you'll need to be careful with what's available to the player, optimal builds are something you want to control
>>
>>187779627
what made FTL a good experience is urgency and consequences, so giving total control is bad, you can roll your own ship but you're stuck with it, since you'll have the same number of rooms the whole run you have to choose carefully where to place a new system (like medbay healing 4 units instead of 2 on a big room).
as for optimal builds i'll throw enough variety to counter it, i'm studying FTL and learning from it, some weapons and ship layouts were too op

Literally rip another ip, like Warhammer 40k or Mass effect or Metroid, doesn't matter, and use that to base your mechanics. Then swap the paint and the names.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be harsh there. But if you understand how grass usually works in game engines, it's just a matter of reducing the resolution of the texure and using nearest neighbor filtering. If you treat it as a magical box, "unity's grass", you won't learn how to actually understand it.

Ah man, I'm having some trouble with player turns if anyone could help.
They players are rolling dice to see who goes first.
I know a long way to compare which is the highest number rolled, but I'm guessing there's a better way.
Have any of you devs had to deal with this?

Start with a list of strings, makes an array of all characters contained in those strings.
For every character, I build an array which corresponds to the first character followed by another, and I find the probability of how often that character follows.
So say for the letter 'a' I could have it followed by any other character, but each character/letter has a different chance.
So I generate a string which has a length I also weighted according to the input string array (the list of star names) by starting with a character (also weighted) and then using the probabilities described before to determine the next character.
I think you can do longer sequences instead of just looking at the very last character to determine the next character but idk if I care to.

Here's a sample of star names with order 2 (previous 2 characters are used to determine next character): Scor, Cetus, Phoeni, Camedaliscis Venta, Lynx, Cetus, Trius, Lepheus, Cans, Pis, Puppis Vela, Lyra, Cangulum, Triga, Triona, Aquaridances, Opheus, Leo, Orinisces, Dela, Pis, Capridales, Velpeianicerpeia, Lynx, Crus, Sagitta

Planet names (ignore not capitalized i'll fix that): varth, ne, enus, tito, synepturon, rhea, huya, saturanymea, juneptunomia, euranthyperanus, ea, chea, mimas, teth, tito, mia, ia, triel, juna, obe, phoebelas, jupiton, camnia, tris, juphroteune, juna, mereid, mea, intethygiele

Honestly, with the topdown zelda genre, you should just go with something that feels good to play. 1 + "1" = "11", not 11. Adding a string into a number turns the number into a string too. Reducing by a string doesn't make sense so it does one of those "super convenient" things where it converts it to a number.

I think order 2 for the markov chain is the sweet spot of not retarded and not copying. I tried 3 and only got 53 unique strings too so I'd have to add a bunch more data and it already looked a bit too familiar.
Here's some stars with order 2.
Camedaleus, Cans, Cepheustrius, Eriuchus, Colum, Andra, Geminus, Pisci, Cans, Colum Aus, Cetustra, Vula, Delopeia, Crus, Phoentani, Orina Minus, Orida, Lyrale, Dela, Arale, Canix, Herpiungulumba, Aricerpecule, Sco, Crales, Arius, Eridangula, Cassion, Eries, Comedalis, Herenater, Canus, Aquulumba, Canis, Cameda, Hydron, Cenis Vela, Carius, Camedances, Trius, Aquarinus, Per, Vula, Casus, Tricor, Grustra, Ariga, Aquarda, Crus, Equule, Geminor, Cenix, Libraco, Ophinorpecules, Cani, Trida

Planet names are mostly roman gods, smaller bodies are mostly greek gods and minor deities (there are a whole lot of these). Keep in mind that in a lot of cases the romans just renamed greek gods.
>>
>>187806395
I see, thanks. I was actually wondering about planets, should I try to give every planet (200-maybe 10,000 stars, 1-12 planets each) a unique name? Maybe I could try to use a shortened version of the star(s) name as a prefix and then not care about uniqueness among the whole galaxy, just among any systems with the same prefix I guess?
>>
>>187806651
Depends a lot on whether the planets are settled, explored, etc etc etc. I'm ideaguying here, but I'd give settled planets (and planets in settled systems) real names, and then use one or more numerical systems for unimportant planets. I'm a big fan of mixing procedural systems so players don't see the edges of any system immediately. It's a little inelegant but it makes the game feel more real

For example, Cangulum-6 (the sixth planet in the Cangulum system.

Why are you asking if something has potential in amateur dev general on taiwanese basketweaving forum?

How important is encrypting save files? And how overboard do you go with it? I'm thinking of doing something like running all variables through an arbitrary sum and then converting numbers to random symbols when saving and loading, or something along those lines.

I'm also not sure if I'd rather just leave all variables in an easily editable ini file. Like, if people want to mod the game to cheat, they will figure it out eventually. Why make it more awkward for them? The people who want to play legit, will play legit.
>>
>>187812961
You could just leave them in an .ini and make the names unrelated to what they are
>>
>>187812961
If it's single player then there's literally no reason to make it harder to tamper with the files. If someone want to cheatscum then let them.
>>
>>187812961
Just let them cheat. If people care about your game enough to cheat it's probably not on a first playthrough.

it'll be ready for demo day

you can actually die in the current version

I haven't been feeling well lately. got the 3d ramps working more stable. side collision works now. just imagine they're drawn as a wedge shape rather than just a ramp.

I love this idea. Might do it to fuck with would-be cheaters. Make a value called "health" but it actually relates to how aggressive enemies are or how many spawn, or something. So if somebody goes in and puts it up, it'll just make the game way harder.

>>187813167
>>187813219
Yeah I suppose it doesn't really matter. Might just put a message at the top of the ini file like "pls don't cheat" and call it a day

If you are asking whether an idea has potential or not the one without potential is you bud.
But you are probably here just to get validation of the 'wow I really like that idea' sort and never really intended to do anything in the first place.

In my homeland we call this type of thing 'mental wanking'.

I'm available to make art for your game, I just need you to answer a few questions for me before we begin.
>>
>>187815250
Sorry, your artistic style doesn't suit my game, but good luck.
>>
>>187815250
I can't share details of my game, I don't want people to steal my technology stack and ideas. Sorry.
>>
Reminder to make your game deterministic, so you can have a frame perfect replay system by storing user inputs.

And facade too

You're joking, right? There's a dev here making a furry punchout game that has a more of a gritty setting to it, people fight to the death within the lore and shit.

deterministic is not an option

why not?

Just got addicted to duolingo and thinking I should really get into educationdev

First thought was something about differential equations, since it's got some prerequisite barriers to entry but at the same time, I think if it were presented correctly a layman could somewhat deal with the concepts.
Also it has a very nice "hierarchy" of sorts, regarding simple to more complicated problems, which would lend itself to a game-like progression.

Who can redpill me on object pooling? What exactly does this do?

spawning and destroying bullets all the time creates a lot of garbage that must be cleaned up which degrades performance, potentially by a lot

a pool keeps the maximum amount of objects spawned and just activates/deactivates them, keeping performance high

particle systems are a form of object pool
particle systems are a great example of data oriented design
>>
>>187816153
don't make new objects use old ones.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

yes because you have a long list of coherent objects in memory that are transformed by a system, in this case the particle animation
