I'd guess ten or a dozen hours of solid playtime for the story missions
maybe another two hours depending on your level to go through the strikes the first time
really the later story missions will also depend on your level
the raid will take you several hours the first time unless you wait until everyone knows how to do it and get some people to carry you, in which case it'll probably still take like an hour and a half to two hours
the quests in the vanilla game, not counting the time spent in story mode, strikes, the raid, or social spaces, are a complete mystery, no one knows how long they'll take you, but you can expect at least a couple more hours and up to several entire days of play time
adventures and treasure hunts are also a complete mystery, but I'll go out on a limb and say they'll give you at least twenty minutes to half an hour per destination
so basically you're looking at 14-18 hours of solid playtime, but that'll be broken up by cutscenes, turning things in and picking them up in social spaces, going through menus (and there is a fair bit of menuing), the Crucible PvE mode (if you want, although you'll definitely need to do it for some quests), and probably grinding (which may also be required by some quests)

Law breakers ran a few true beta tests.. As entire chunks of the game where clearly not fully cooked yet. Then a month would go by and they would have another beta with a newer build a bit more would be fixed.

Destiny 2 is not really a beta, it's a demo they call a beta so they can just run it a few days and shut it down. No different than what The Division did and a whole lot of other companies do now.

It lets you have a demo for all of a few days max and then you're done. The game is done, now it's just about what we get in a release day patch. Odds are it ships with the aim assist for PVP and all hell breaks loose over it.

They are using the betas to test out shit.
Not just a server test, but tests for balance and shit.
With the console beta they explained that they were testing out changes they had in mind that they hadn't solved with their internal testing.
Whether or not they use is data is another factor all together though.
We will know more when the game releases in just under a week in regards to them changing balancing.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

I know you can run around in the Strike mission and it's a bit open-world, you can explore a few places but there doesn't seem to be anything worthwhile except just fucking about.

Then there's the F1 menu where you can right click your gear and fuck around with some things, increase stability, range, etc and whatnot.

Is there anything else I greatly missed to increase my enjoyment out of the beta?

Accuracy is actually extremely important because a weapon that can place all of its shots on enemy weakpoints from a distance will vastly outDPS weapons which have better paper damage stats but shit accuracy. X is specifically for air moves, like the Warlocks in-air dash. If your Titan spec doesn't have one of those moves, it won't do anything.

Choose a different jump type. There should be one that gives you more air control. Your Agility stat on armor also affects your jump speed and height to some degree.

I haven't played the first game because even though I have a ps4 I don't want to pay for online. How important is it to brush up on the story?
Also for the classes the beta drops you straight in. I have a basic understanding of what each of them are like, but is there a brief overview of them anywhere? I'll probably just try them for myself but so far I've only seen some brief descriptions of trees etc online. Also, how many people play solo? From just the first mission I think it'd be way less interesting personally, and while this might be a shit comparison I get a borderlandsish vibe where playing with your buddies is more or less the only way to do it. The game does seem pretty fun so far.
