I have to put stuff up in some item sets to get them out, being a gunner and all you tend to use a good portion of the item bag. But yes, most people just have them with them, later in the game.
That is why it should be improved upon. Just because they are easy to get or have doesn't mean they can't be more impactful, it's just the current system makes them into use and forget buffs.

Frontier is a poor starting point because it throws you into the action too fast hilariously when the other games take too long. Also G rank needs a subscription and since everything is in japanese or chinese depending on which version you play it'll be annoying to follow and may turn you off to the series as a whole.

If you meant Freedom Unite then still no because the game is brutal with limiting your starting zenny and is pretty unpolished as a whole with plenty of broken hitboxes and braindead AI that is only "hard" because when it does actually hit you it takes half your health.

Best places to start are emulating p3rd HD using PPSSPP or 4U on 3ds.

I want to try LBG in Generations since I haven't really given it a chance, but the prospect of having a separate gun for each one of the elements, one for pierce and one for normal is a bit overwhelming.

If I wanted to make a LBG for general use, as in something that is not specifically tailored to kill certain monsters but could be decent against everything, am I better off with a pierce shot gun or a normal shot gun?

How do monster organisms work?

I'm trying to be pro with the GS and land full charges on everything, but a lot of monsters seem too mobile. I end up mostly running around and landing level 1s or 2s and trying not to get hit. Is this normal or am I still bad yet?
