That entire part of the world has been weird since the start of the game. Ottomans declared on Albania, got the pop up and then, in 1447 another pop up that "Ottomans are no longer a World Power".

They declared on Byzantium and the best I could work out was that Byzantines rode on Serbia's back. Serbia then got fucked over by Hungary, Albania came back and then Bosnia took the lot.

For doom nations, the free colonist has its downside though. The more provinces you have, the more doom you get / year, so you shouldn't use it unless you have all reforms activated. Take from your neighbors just enough to handicap them and feed you sacrifices and reforms. That way you'd get your first colony around the time portugal does

Did vanilla EU4 always have this development mechanic?

I had to increase some development because my economy was fucked and I really only recently realized I could stop fucking up my country completely by spending on development (I was too intimidated to bother with development before).

So, it was pretty obvious then when I found myself spending points on everything, wasting income and wasting long time potential with development being my only other option at the time, but I would like a more general strategy.

Its just been so long since I've played EU4. Most of my games are CK2, but I started to miss Colonial greed.

I want to share my very verbose tale with you. Sorry for the long blog post, I started to play Crusader Kings 2 recently and this is my first big successful achievement.

This was an insane war. After the death of Emperor Karl in 797 his Francian Empire split off to three kingdoms. I took this opportunity and declared independence revolt against new king of West Francia.
My forces crushed main army of loyalists in large battle but soon after I went bankrupt because of insane upkeep cost of mercenaries. These fuckers instantly deserted and I was left with only two thousand warriors.
To make things worse, king called upon an ally, king of Burgundy and his forces started to invade my land. I managed to beat them again (they had penalty for river crossing).
In the middle of war a huge outbreak of Camp Fever broke out, claiming a life of West Francian king (as well as lives of my wife and one of my two daughters). New king of West Francia was a 6-year-old boy and needless to say he was incompetent in warfare.
I achieved +92% war progress against loyalists when king of fucking Danmark suddenly declared a war against me. These pagan fuckers constantly tried to raid my fiefs for last decade but I always kicked their asses withoout trouble. But holy fuck, did they have a huge army. When I saw a first army of almost four thousand warriors I thought that all is lost.

I was very surprised when my army won a staggering victory with minimal losses. Pagan shitters were not that tough after all. My Duke gained a trait Flat Terrain Expert and this proved to be a decisive advantage in all battles after that. I kicked out remains of first Danmark army back to their lands and suddenly was attacked by second army almost the same size as first one. Remains of defeated first army stopped retreating and joined battle too.
I almost came in my pants when my army achieved a complete victory (losses were high though). My men slayed enemy commander in combat. I took several prisoners in this battle and ransomed them for good money. After several more skirmishes war with Danmark ended with my victory. I marched mith my army to the south-west, defeated small army of West Francia that king managed to muster and finally achieved goal of my revolt.
The West Francian Revolt League Independence War lasted from 798 to 813. My Duchy is independent now but my heir is married to syphilitic bitch with lunacy (she was perfectly normal before marriage) and many of my vassals angry at me for raised levies. Could be worse, I guess.

Again, sorry for the boring blog post, I just like this game very much and still learning to play.

No norman influence, England is using a nordic cross in its flag, but the Union Jack is unchanged, same as the US flag. The only change in-universe is the vocabulary of the common English, but I won't reflect these changes for obvious reasons.
