Bob and vagene edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.
It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Apart from that, I think we could use something like this guide https://pastebin.com/MNrJ3ZQh (except good) - supershort guides for all nations; what are they good at and what should you expect when playing as or against them. I can write a few sections, but I don't really feel competent enough to summarize the usual strategies for all nations.

So as some guy pointed out in the previous thread, Lanka's surrender was entirely premature. And as another proof of that we now find out that Lanka was sitting on some fine reserves of D gems which the AI was not ashamed of spending on lots and lots of undead.

The resulting spike in "Army strength" graph is quite a thing to behold, and those skeletons will take a while to clean up.

Elswhere, we have the following happenings:

>Ur has finally taken Sauro's capital, and is now about to take the last few remaining Sauro provinces. Capital assault was quite tough, with Sauro's mages spamming skeletons and blocking the entrance, so there were some pretty serious losses.
>Pangaea has taken Berytos capital. The capital was barely defended, so losses only include a bunch of maenads and 10 White Centaurs
>Agartha has reached Mictlan's capital and is now sieging it.
>Fomoria has conquered a Mictlan's fort and has not made any further moves yet.
>Ulm's invasion to Lanka has been stopped by the undead monkeys for now.

Firebirds are seriously underrated. They are a Bogarus-only strategy, but i've found that summoning a few early (piss easy with Alchemists) really makes every turn much more profitable, the good events (if you took god-like scales as i have) are insanely profitable, any gem event lets you convert the entire bounty to, like, other 5 Firebirds (they cost only 2 fire gems), and you research them pretty quickly given Bogarus researchers + magic scales i've taken.
I hope the other players wont realize they are shit tier units and break the illusion of being well defended by them + shit tier archers.

I participated in an LA blitz a while ago, playing LA Ulm for the first time
Thought I was doing well until a couple of players questioned why I didn't have vampires.
Apparently, the nation should focus on blood magic rather than play as the typical evo human nation like MA Ulm

Is going Blood really the only viable trategy for this nation?
I liked the theme of EA and MA Ulm being about strong men not giving a fuck about monsters and gods. Thus summoning demons and vampires as LA Ulm is something I'd like to avoid not doing,

Pic related Marignon and Patala attacked me for thrones, while Agartha tried to vulture me.
Used an F9 A4 Idol of Man pretender, which in hindsight was a probably a bad idea because I found out black templars were cap-only.

There may be alternatives, but then you're basically a low astral nation with some earth. You have national vamp counts that generate free patrollers for bloodhunters. If you're not using them, you're handicapping yourself.

It's doable in principle but while Ulm reaches midgame quickly (due to recruit everywhere mages), their advantage is the ability to recruit mages without having to build infrastructure first and once other nations get their forts up and recruitment starts being limited by income/upkeep rather than how many provinces you can recruit mages from, bloodless Ulm loses pretty much any edge they could possibly have had over other nations. For example, LA Pangaea does communions better (high HP centaur sages suitable for turbocommunions, can cast Thunder Strike/Gift from Heavens/etc in addition to astral spells), all the while also having big N/E mages AND better troops.

I subbed in the game around the turn 20 I think. I had about 10 provinces and one non capital fort without addons on a lizard shaman province. And around 60 great olms.

I started with expanding and building more forts and not recruiting a single olm until like last turn of the game.

!BREAKING NEWS!

Today's big story:

A decisive battle has been fought between Agartha and Mictlan! And while Agartha has suffered some heavy losses, including its pretender, it has been able to completely defeat Mictlan's last stand.

Major part of Mictlan's army consisted of slaves, which have been blown away by Agartha's blade winds.
Ozelotls and Jaggies were actually the ones to hold the line and deal the most damage against Agartha, along with some summons provided by mages.
Agartha's Pretender has been doing fine for most of the battle, but at some point he decided to Drain Life a Jaguar Warrior. That clearly was not his best decision, as the blood vengeance swiftly made him go "poof" in front of his shocked soldiers. And you can be sure there's no dominion to proc his immortality either.

Nonetheless, Great Olms and remaining agartha's forces have been able to succesfully defeat what remained of Mictlan's elite troops and the mages they protected.

RIP in peace "All i wanted to do was blood hunt" Mictlan. We are sorry for bullying you.

Before ((((((he)))))) starts bragging i want to tell you how the game went from my perspective

Im pretty sure earth attack was my third MP game in dominions and it showed.
I submitted an absolutely horrendous imprisoned pretender with no bless whatsoever , I started the game and expanded very poorly after which i somehow suceeded in removing Oceania from land and made a non agression pact with agartham which turned out to be absolutely disastrous.
I then ate fomoria and spent the rest of the game watching as arcosephale, vanheim and TC fail to defeat agartha, but it was a learning experience nonetheless

I started by making friends with my neighbors, mainly Lanka and Sauro.

Lanka quickly got invaded by Fomoria and I moved in to shield him from Fomoria and by providing him with whatever aid I could. He stayed my good vassal for the game.

I signed a NAP with Sauro with no expiry date, that was annoying as I couldn't get his thrones and had to go around the entire world for them.

When Kailasa fell I vultured some of his lands, including a throne.

After that I was aiming for EBDW but Arco stole it from me. Whats even worse he started summoning hidden in sand armies and that made me panic. Sand skeletons are nigh immune to magma kids and that was my entire army by then bar a few mercuries.

I quickly invaded Arco despite only having alt6 and evo5/conj3. Fortunately he wasnt much of a challenge.

Vanheim decided I was the biggest challenge (I was) and invaded me via sailing. He took my throne fort but I retook it after reaching alt7 and fog warriors.

In the meanwhile Sauro ate Fomoria, Lanka was a small state that was my vassal, also fighting Arco, Kaialsa fell to TC and Vanheim/Yomi.

Yomi was fighting Vanheim and kinda losing but elves couldnt finish him off - because they sent all their stuff on me obviously. Yomi randomly went AI tho despite havign good odds for a great comeback. He did send me 100W before, that funded my mercury army.

With my newly Yomi funded mercury doomstack and never ending supply of magma kids and some umbrals/penumbrals I leisurely invaded TC/Oceania taking their thrones I needed to win.

TC went all in on conj9 so apparently he had no battle magic despite having an assload of indie mages and research and territory and gems and whatever.

Oceania did fuckall but be annoying all game.

My enemies evidently did not use their rp/gems properly as they had a massive lead for most of the game.

TC had W9F9E4 and played way too passive for that bless. He played scales TC not double bless rapist TC he should have.

Elves gave up too soon. So did Yomi and Arco.

Sauro was too pussy vagina ass to fight me. Cluck cluk chicken, hiding behind our NAP.

Lanka was a good boi, he gets to be my right hand after ascension.

EA Agartha is great fun nation, reccomend it. Pity I didn't get to break the seal tho.

Lanka has made a valiant effort to break the siege, however the effort fell flat. It did show me a few errors in my troop positioning and that will be changed to fix it in the future to avoid unneeded loss of life. His pretender is still hiding in the castle, but with even less troops to repair the damage I am causing I think his days are numbered.

They're great in UW fights. But the thing is that your opponent can just decide to not go UW. On land, you only have two kinds of mage, and sirens are shit and capricorns are expensive slowrecs. Your troops are basically pangean, but worse. No armor to be seen. At least your capricorns can buff them.

Flying around siren deathsquads was funny, but hardly effective.

Take awake scales or awake monobless bless unless you're playing on a very large map (15+ players), in which case you can reasonably argue for the scaling potence of a bless.

Expand with your sacred heavy infantry as a core and falchion flankers, as they don't need a bless to be good at surviving against crossbows.

Spend all of your early D gems on tomb kings. Use chariots for fighting and tomb wyrms for evo bait/general tanking. Later, you might need to dump D gems on battlemagic and boosters, so it's less of an obvious always-buy the way that Dusk Elders are.

Use HoS mage support + indy crossbows for midgame fighting, and transition into armies of undead chaff with banefire + battlefield badness (rigor mortis, heat from hell, etc). Poison slingers are less useful than crossbows early, but become good v high prot or tower shield enemies that can't put up poison res or mass regen, as their poison damage is AN. They also can't be blocked by arrowfend effects.

Once you have a few forts up, spam only sauromancers out of cap and empoisoners from your cap

Can't stop winning all these games, lads. This one was pretty mediocre.

My innovative N9B9 misfortune 2 drain 2 mari was immediately fucked by throne placement inside cap circle and no way to expand beyond 2 rivers. The game's gimmick was 125% resources, so I wanted to try the knight expansion strat. It went well until I met Jotunheim. I had no choice but to immediately kill him. It was really easy, and even kind of embarassingly so. He didn't even break siege when I domkilled his capital.

After killing Jotun, I saw that Pan was the largest nation, and that he attacked both Machaka and Ulm. I also saw Moat being once again irrelevant with his meme Ys build, as he was blocking me access to AI Vanarus. When all was dealt with, I had 3 capitals, and Ulm and Machaka killed Pan, but were weakened in the process. Ashdod (who I assume killed Caelum just like I killed Jotun) was eating Abysia and was preparing for an inevitable throne rush.

Luckily, I had less thrones than him, so it was easy enough to diplomance against him. I was pretty shocked by my allies' incompetence, to be honest. First, look at the province graph. They were attacking like 1 per turn. Second, at one point Ashdod had his H3 summons and thugs ready for a thronerush, and I had to spend my own gems to save Machaka's indie (!) throne 1 province away from his cap circle. On turn 50. Indie throne on turn 50. Let that sink in.

Anyway, after Ashdod went AI because of a failed throne rush I had seraphs and all the crazy shit they can cast researched. I started half-assing turns and teleporting shit on remaining thrones. If I cared more I could've ended the game earlier, I guess. Machaka and Ulm annoyed me a little by killing my seraph and a few other angels, but I was snowballing so hard that I didn't even care about lost provinces. I basically had one half of a seraph in gem income per turn.

Take an early expander fully knowing it'll probably get you about five provinces then die to hidden cloud mages. If that's not worth it to you, then don't take an expander.
If you don't blind expand like a madman, and you expand turn 2 into hidden cloud mages, you're in a rough spot but its not the end of the world, since on the basis you were expecting him to die by turn 5 anyway, you just stunted your expansion.

If you want to take an expander and use him to cast mid game magic (mother oak probably) then only send him with expansion parties, and/or only attack deer tribe and militia/heavy infantry/archer provinces.

Something worth noting. I used summod's flagellant pillaging only like twice. This was intentional. In my opinion that mechanic is super OP in its current state. You can get more flags than Ermor has skellies. And they're all sacred as well. Anyway, I deliberately set up concentration recruitment camps near my capital as soon as possible (temples everywhere). You can see the results on dominion graph.

Knights proved really useful with 125% resources. Basically, B9N9 heavily armored sacreds from every fort with crossbowmen support in MA. Nothing to grumble about. Then I transitioned into angels, of course, and with summod buffs they're really great. I even think Seraphs are overbuffed. I have my calculations somewhere, but with gift of reason (that my summoned ivy lords were casting) you get seraph + 3 harbingers for 88 pearls. This is EXTREMELY powerful. And I only used my meme astral tempest/fire storm/wrathful skies combo once.

Furthermore if you are concerned by tribless elves blobbing out of control but you don't border them (yet) you can help the effort by attacking Yomi who started off as a bat enabler and is now an elf enabler. If it wasn't for his dumb attack on me 4 turns ago I would have preemptively stuck Vanheim by now and would have lessened the elfing.

If you're expecting their frontline to start near the front of the field or to move forward to meet your troops, that positioning should be fine.

If your enemy deploys their troops further back and your troops move forward to meet them, you'll likely be out of range.

Majority of Lanka's army consisted of undeads, but also included their weird Prophet guy.
The undead monkeys dont make for strong warriors though, so despite their massive numerical advantage, Lanka's forces have been routed. The prophet was also able to retreat, but not before we gave him a few parting gifts that hopefully will take a while to heal.

Bringing a bigger army, forging gate cleavers, and casting crumble is an option as all three increase the rate an enemy's fort will get breached. This one is tricky. You can #copyspell Angelic Host and change the unit-summons by putting in a different value for #damage. You can't change the commander, unfortunately, but Arch Angels are fairly thematic for the nation. You can make it a normal far-summon with a #nextspell for the mage (this will leave you with two commanders though, 1 who is the mage, 1 who was drawn from the 10 units to be a commander.) Presumably, you could also try your hand at event modding but I can't help you there.

Archers work pretty well, especially with a fire-resistant frontline (e.g. fire elementals) to hold them in place. No shields and 8 prot make them a good target for arrows.

While they're nasty, they have poor defense and protection. Decently armored (or really cheap) troops can trade with them to some degree.

Agartha gets a low supply of fire gems, and doesn't have good sitesearching capacities for it. While they're great for the cost, it's likely to be a while before Agartha can shit a hundred out to fight you.

I'd suppose there's about as many of them.

Early game turns are typically a few minutes at most, but by midgame, if you want to do your turns with care, they might take tens of minutes or more, depending on map size and faction. It's possible to play quite fast, but that kinda rules out some of the more micro-intensive strategies and tactics, and some people like to deliberate on choices instead of just issuing orders and pressing end turn ASAP (not necessarily looking at the game screen but sleeping over it sort of thing). And given the time zone differences and exhaustion, people tend to prefer a more relaxed schedule even if slightly larger games were in principle finishable in one sitting.

Of course, in really large games (a lot of player/large map) there's an occasional turn that takes a few hours to prepare (if you're scripting for multiple large battles in the same turn) but with the kind of settings most games are played here, an hour long turn in endgame is already exceedingly rare unless you really take your sweet time, and most players lose or fall into irrelevancy well before you reach that stage. Looking at various game settings, factions and playstyles as a whole, 10 minutes is probably the average turn length overall.

Default UI components (the yellow borders and such like) are awful, I personally use Dom3 ones which are all right. Spritework is good and detailed, I like it. Most maps (even those included with the game) have been made by the players so I won't comment on those.

As for the 3D battlefields, they're serviceable, but I can't help but to feel an aesthetic more consistent with the sprites (say, something like HoMM3 battlefields) would be vastly preferable. They're an improvement over Dominions 1 battlefields because they had almost no detail at all but stylistically I think the old method was the way to go. Spell effects tend to be pretty good.

As a whole, I like how the game looks (on good maps, anything equal or better to Cartographic Revision generated ones).

EG: At N9 sleep cloud has an AoE of 9 and fatigues for 46+(6*3),

Every 2 points above minimum also increases penetration by 1 on Magic Resistance Negates effects.

In a series of hilariously embarassing defeats, Agartha and Fomoria each lost a battle against indie barbarians.
In case of Fomoria, 2 light thugs have been sent to quell a rebellion in a province. Each armed with a Weightless Kite Shield and Frost Brand, they smugly cast their buffs and started cleaving the barbarians.
But apparently, 40hp mistform + 19def + 4hp regen does not protect from being poked at the rate of ~16 hits per turn. The 8 morale barbarians shamelessly ignored all the morale checks and killed one of the druids, forcing the other one to flee.

In case of Agartha...well you just dont attack 44 barbarians with just 12 fairly ordinary units. The angry men with big axes quickly chewed through the pale ones and then through their worm friends.

But that is not all!

Brain-dead Lanka continues to throw its armies aimlessly at neighboring provinces. Unfortunately, it also has a tendency to patrol its provinces and kill our poor reporters, so we have not been able to obtain any footage of its battles against Ulm.
And as for Lanka's attacks against the lands of Ur, the battles clearly show how little the "Army strength" graph means when it comes to actual combat. In both cases some light PD reinforced by a local army has been enough to repel the attacks. And this time the 3 Asrapas have been properly triggered before the rest of the army routed, allowing for safe removal of those raging dykes.

1. The cap gems dont add up to national mages. Mages are very DF heavy and neither of those gems is featured.
2. Due to good DF mages and crap mages otherwise it will be a skele spam/bane fire nation with good blood, not sure if you had that in mind.
3. Hydras look like Pythian hydras and those suck, a cost decrease is needed I think. Maybe bigger rec limit too to stack fear.
4. Gnolls in Homm3 had flails/maces not spears.
5. Tatalian lizards have lower hp than normal lizards.
6. Wyvern stats not quite up to size5 but I assume its why they cost so little.
7. Troll res cost seems wrong, not sure how much a trident/battleaxe costs but seems too little. Mountain trolls are obviously superior. I recommend adding specialization to troll subspecies - river trolls could be normal amphibians with 50% dark vision, mountain trolls the current heavy hitters and swamp trolls have bigger poison res and a poisoned weapon.

In other news, Sceleria just conquered a throne, Vanheim does who knows what, Bandar does who knows what and Shinuyama should be feeling bad about trying to unsuccessfully destroy me with his best ally Pan (who apparently gave up this game after a bit of dickery).

I am going to bet that Sceleria right now is one of the stronkest nations around, the only other stronk ones should be me and Vanarus. I have no idea how good Atlantis is doing in that big pond of his, same goes for THIS GUY IS MALAKAL BEWARE of Bandar.
As for AI nations, Jotuheim seems to still be on the map and Pythium is one of the only 2 nations that I don't border in any way (the other one being Atlantis).

I'm sure you have scouts. Vanarus is in my damn capring and I haven't expanded east at all (for reasons that I'm sure you know by now). Attacking Jotunheim was my only option to expand.

Bandar and Vanarus have a similar province count to me, I think, and more varied terrain. And almost certainly better research, because a lot of my early mages went onto field duty immediately.
