First you separately purchase the altar and the crystal from the tarvenkeep. You need to place the altar on a flat surface of 61 blocks, which is pretty long. The elevation can vary slightly but not by much. There must be no floating blocks in the zone that is at least 10 blocks above the arena. Once you fulfill these conditions, you can put the crystal in the crystal stand. This summons two portals, to the left and to the right, from which comes an endless stream of enemies who want to smash your altar. It's very similar to the goblin invasion event, especially during the first waves that consists of foot soldiers, but then it gets more complicates with wyverns and stuff. You have to use the defense-summoning items sold by the tavernkeep (I like the ballista summon) in order to push away the waves of enemies, and your reward is to be able to use these tower-summoning items outside of the items. They are pretty weak, once you get past the novelty of summoning ballistas anywhere on the screen for like 5 mana.

To answer your question: it depends on your other gear (and modifiers), yet it also doesn't matter too much. If in doubt, the wiki suggests you keep "+ to damage" and "+ to crit" about equal. If you REALLY want to know, get a dps meter and target dummy, then try both.

rpg is a classes mod that lets you choose from a shitload of classes. you craft an item at the beginning and then you get to be that class. theres classes for everything, magic/ranger hybrids, melee/summoner hybrid a fishing class, etc. basically it provides stat improvements to your character every time you kill a boss. scales until you killed each unique boss provided by the base game or mods once.

ive played with all mods yesterday for about 8 hours in the same world with two other guys.
never once has my terraria gone above 2.5gb ram, crashed or leaked any sort of memory.

fargos mod does provide a battlerod soul.
it checks if battlerods is available than adds properties to the fishing soul.

it has no damage stats on it because that would be overpowered. keep in mind battlerods benefit from all damage types.
if you have lets say an accessory that provides 15% melee damage and 10% magic damage.
battlerods will gain the modifer of the highest stat meaning the 15% will apply to battlerods.

You need to either starting using it from the beginning of a world or grind quite a bit until it starts giving you useful bonuses. It's also nice to see number getting bigger as you progress.
In the end it's just a different way to tackle classes than locking you to something and making everything else terrible. At least this way you can change classes any time you want, as long you you've farmed enough orbs to craft their tokens.

If it's made of ice, Shiverthorns are going to spawn on top of it, so you can farm it for free.

You can also get the Frostspark Boots before you kill the WoF; which will make your mobility on ice better than if you were using any other kind of block.

After hardmode is unlocked, a lot of Hallow will spawn, which will turn your Ice into Pink Ice, which will spawn little crystal shards, which are used for a couple of different things.
