Go with a race that's somewhat vanilla, not fairy bullshit or other races with too massive advantages/disadvantages then you can't go wrong. Like Elea, Eulderna or similar.
Class matters very little, you're going to get every skill in the game anyway. Warmage is versatile because you will almost certainly want to cast some spells even as a melee heavy character.

If you hit things in Elona, your hitdude skill will increase. For example, using your Scythe to hit things that is around your level/AP value will cause your Scythe skill and Tactics to increase. It's also accompanied by a Str increase every single time you hit which you can monitor using an item which name I've already forgotten.

it's an interesting game: rather than euclidean space, the whole thing takes place on a hyperbolic plane with lots of weird hyperbolic geometry rules
it's a pretty puzzle-y game, where most enemies die in one hit or kill the player in one hit, and every region/branch/"land" has a different kind of puzzley theme.
oh yes, and the game follows chess-like rules where you're not allowed to make any moves that would put you in 'check'. in other words, you can't do anything that would lead to you dying next turn, and you only lose if you're checkmated and have no possible moves

The Land of Eternal Motion is a pretty simple dungeon branch mechanically but it shows off some weird hyperbolic properties
Tiles fall down and become impassable chasms 1 turn after you step on them, so you can't backtrack and you can't spend your turn attacking enemies.
The monsters here are all the same speed as the player, and more spawn over time, so at first it sounds like it would be impossible to ever outrun them.
But in hyperbolic geometry, 'normal' parallel lines dont exist. The dogs can't chase you forever by running along a line next to yours, because the path they have to follow to stay close is longer than the path you have to follow to run away.
So you can outrun same-speed enemies just by walking in a straight line. It's a crawl player's dream.

Don't play single pool. Multipool if you don't suck, freeform if you do. Single pool is tedious but easy.

Lab start gives you mutant traits to select from and that's more fun. But escaping from labs can be tedious if you know how to do it but just need tools.
Very bad day is RNG bullshit. Don't pick it, pick the sheltered start or infected start instead.

Parkour expert and pain resistant are must-have. Deft is good nowadays. Most allergies are free points - you can get +12 trait points with no real bad effects if you don't feel bad about exploiting badly designed traits.

For starting skills, grab enough cooking and chemistry to unlock zombie pheromones.

Strength is good for any melee (more so for unarmed and heavy weapons), dexterity is good for defense and accuracy, perception gives you better ranged ranged is utterly shitty in mainline version, if you want to go that way, grab cool days ahead and nightvision.
Intelligence is shittily designed: it doesn't give any tangible benefits, instead it just makes book reading faster, so less tedium.

You don't need more optimization than that.

I have no fucking clue what I'm doing in Elona+. The stats are hard to read and harder to understand. I try to cart supplies between Kapul and Verlis but all it takes is one hunger demon to starve me since I can't seem to hit the fuckers.
Every time I go to sleep a bunch of weird shit happens and I learn spells I can't cast without exploding myself or wake up with green blood and strong arms.
Occasionally while walking I suddenly and without warning "Feel powerless". No idea what that means.
I still haven't figured out how skills level, what potential is, or what benefit training with plat does other than for learning new skills. Bodybuilding raises by being burdened. That much I got so far.
This fucking nigger wants five full pokeballs from me and I can barely carry one since they seem to not mitigate the weight of the creature. My pet dies almost instantly in any low level combat and starts hating me- i've taken to just not even trying to revive it until i have a set of gear and figure out wtf gene engineering is.
My wrists hurt and I cant seem to regain all the karma I lose for fucking people to raise my rep with them (assumedly getting better prices for trade goods).
Its relatively cheap to identify items but fucking obnoxious that they you have to identify each type(cursed, blessed, and every prefix under the son) and some of them seemingly don't stay identified regardless.
I can't tell when my nigger bear or nigger little girl has actually equipped the gear i give them. I gave some shit to my little girl pet on one of my chars and the stupid bitch sold it, however when arming my bear (my god given american right) i actually got a prompt for melee and ranged so that time it worked???
I REALLY want to bounce a quarter off of shena's ass.

Skills level by doing them. Potential (the %'s next to the level) is your prospects for leveling the skill or stat. Higher potential in the skills or stats increase the speed at which they train. Having low potentials make leveling skills and stats an absolute slog. Do quests to raise karma, the questboards in each town are your best friends. Do the easy ones so you can't fuck them up, like item carrying. Don't do any type of escort quest.

Buy a few teleport scrolls for travelling more safely. Buy a leash for controlling your pets. Carry a torch and activate it for a wider light radius. Put wings on your pets so they don't fall down wells like retards.

Cursed/blessed is individual to each item. Either learn how to cast identify or get used to the fact that anything can be cursed unless you bought it from a shop.

On that note, always carry a sandwich in case of cursed food making you puke to starvation. Bread produce never rots.

You drop items when you die after level 5 or 6. you also start getting tax bills, check your salary chest every so often. Take the bill to the tax office opposite Palmia.

While you're there, go north and select a god if you haven't. Faith largely trains itself but you need to get started on it. Apart from anything else, you can get a god pet off them, and they range from handy to very handy.

Oh yeah if you want to dump money on longterm things, you could buy a shop, museum, house, or invest (after picking up the actual skill) in shops to expand their inventory size and quality. You can hire servants for your own house for this, a magic shopkeepers and a black marketeer are the best. Hire a maid anyway. You could also sharpen equipment at a blacksmith, you can add a lot of armor resilience for not much outlay.

Get a smaller instrument like a harmonica. There's a horn in the graveyard between Palmia and Lumiest. Also start either understanding how to magic, or go to the cyberdome/blacksmiths until a mica machinegun shows up, you noodle-limbed microbe.

On the topic of being a fairy, buy the bloody Life bonus feats. Every 5 levels you earn a new feat, and most of them scale terribly. Life is something you desperately need and is a percentage boost. Cheer is another good one since you have pets, and adding stamina is helpful too.

Some random ideas for what new-prides could be. Like someone said earlier, seeing as your character is near-complete at this point, the endgame here should be challenging, unique and interesting stuff that lets you show off your character's power rather than slogging through 17 floors of trash mobs like you've been doing all game.

Grushnak
Let's go all in on the orc military theme. Floor 1 could be 'outside' the pride - a wide open field with a fortification leading inside. Minimal LoS blockers outside of a few trees, and the 'walls' would have plenty of orc archers that would be out of LoS of you, but still capable of pelting you with arrows. Maybe even orcish catapults that'd do time-delayed projectile attacks so you can't just hide behind a tree and rest. Force the player to go through a narrow chokepoint with orc melee blocking it with archers to the side etc. Maybe even a destructible gate to slow you down.
Floor 2 could be a small floor like the existing 'guard room', as it's quite challenging having a bunch of elites and randbosses in a small area. Maybe expand it a little, but it fits the theme and doesn't take too long. Could stick a few more rooms in that lock you inside each time, make it a nasty gauntlet of close range melee mobs led by orc rares.
Floor 3 can be the boss. Grushnak is kinda dull, he's just a giant bag of life/armor that hits hard. Seeing as the theme is military, this could be a 'council' style boss fight that represents the various flavours of Grushnak Orcs - Grushnak himself as Bulwark, a Berserker boss, an Archer boss and a Rogue boss. Killing one of them would enrage the others, healing them and giving them talents themed around the fallen boss.

The boss floor is basically Rend from Blackrock Spire. It'd take place in a dragon training arena/feeding pit, at first you'd just have waves of hatchlings, but it'd ramp up over time to drakes and wyrms of all sorts of elements. Plus orc dragontamers, support orcs that'd hang around at the back, not attacking but heavily buffing and healing dragons and applying nasty elemental resist debuffs on you. Gorbat is supposed to be a super wyrmic, so have him appear riding a multihued dragon as a single unit with a mix of wyrmic and dragon attacks, dropping him to 50% would split them into wyrmic+dragon with a full set of talents and life. Pretty nasty encounter.

This could be several floors, but each of them would be quite small. Each would get a random elemental theme which'd influence the mobs and unique effects, arcane/fire/water/air/earth. E.g. the fire theme would spawn faeros and pyromancers, shifting high-damage lava pools and other such hazards. Probably expand the Vor npc set as well with geomancers/tempests/arcanists.
Vor himself could have an expanded skillset with all 5 archmage elements. At life % intervals, he'd become immune and immobile, summon an elemental crystal that'd be somewhere annoying to reach in the area and force you to go hunt it down and destroy it. While he'd be immobile, he'd be able to do stuff like delayed AoEs, damage fields, debuffs, summoning elementals etc based on the crystal. As his life drops, he'd summon more and more, finally summoning all 5 crystals right before death.

Rakshor
One big level that's a little like crystal forest/sludgenest. You'd be constantly harassed by endlessly spawning waves of undead, seeing as the entire level is one giant blob of bones and raw materials after all. A number of orc necromancers would be around the level, and you'd need to kill them to stop the spawning and drop the shield blocking the exit. Each one would be weak, but on death spawns a nasty undead boss with a high chance of being one of the unique bosses for Rakshor like titan etc. Each necromancer killed would up the quality of the undead, so at first it'd be ghouls and stuff and by the end you'd have to move fast to avoid horrors and liches.
Rakshor himself is supposed to be frail but smart, so rather than engaging you in a straight fight you'd have to chase him as he throws up bone walls and summoned undead, forcing you to stop to destroy them to clear the path. Meanwhile the exit you came in from would have a creeping wave of blight following you that'll stack up and kill you if you don't move fast enough. Eventually you'll reach him and he'll pretty much be a slightly harder necromancer/corruptor as he is currently, the real 'boss' would be getting through the swarms of undead elites before the blight gets you.

Did the dev promise tiles to revive an old roguelike (Adom/Qud) & added a non-roguelike mode (see above)? It's gonna be shit because they're trying to expand their market share to non-roguelike players.

Basically every roguelike that has tiles and costs money and can be found on steam is not a roguelike or a flanderized version of an old, better roguelike.

That said I do like some features of nu-adom and did play the public version, even if I thought the additional random keypress on the "BUY MY GAME" page you get showed every time you start a game was absolutely retarded.

On the other hand, any money that goes to IA is a great investment. You should encourage the devs that do things you enjoy (with money so that they can continue doing the thing and get something back) and not to people who are selling the core concepts of the roguelike genre for a quick buck like whores on the sidewalk.

The reason we actually made the roguelike general and it lasted five years, considering how incredibly DEAD this genre is by numbers of players, was because dcss kept updating daily and was a good game. The moment when shit hit the fan, we kept at it. The moment the fan became clogged with shit, we got worried but kept going. The moment the serious players packed up and left, we took our blindfolds off and saw how bad things really were and stopped being /dcssg/.

This also lead us to be on permanent page 10 support because surprise surprise, not many people actually play roguelikes considering that even the good ones update once every two years, if ever. People like playing stuff that feels fresh, even if it's not the best example of the genre (see: the sheer number of people that play Sil compared to how everyone says Sil is a great roguelike [which it is])

I said it last time and I'll keep saying it, we don't need to keep the roguelike general alive. There is no reason to keep beating a dead horse.

New parkour is not very good. Bulletjumping is really not good for the state of the game and most of the game's tiles are still set up for the old system. Many weapons are basically the same or powercreeped versions of older weapons (most melee play exactly the same as other weapons in their class with only differences in raw stats that don't add up to much in terms of difference). Frames are mostly used for one or two abilities in their kit while the others are neglected by the devs and the community. The devs seem to refuse to fix anything wrong with a frame unless the next Prime Access features them (see the recent Oberon and Hydroid changes. Additionally, many of the frames are simply boring (Octavia is 4 activated abilities that require no engagement, Mirage has 3 and a fire-and-forget, etc). The "quests" are universally trash and are lazily put together with few differences from regular gameplay. The devs are a whole other issue. They say one thing and do another, have little bearing with the community, and will do retarded shit and blame the playerbase for getting mad. As someone who has played it off and on since 2013, the game is shit and the devs are utter faggots.

POWDER is originally for PC and Gameboy Advance, its polished, beautiful in graphical or ASC tileset, and possible to beat but extremely difficult. It was inspired off Rogue and Nethack and all the various Rogue liked that the developer enjoyed.

You can make your own magical items, for example if you dip a long sword into a bottle of Greek fire (dip an empty glass bottle into lava) it catches on fire.

The difficulty is very high yet you almost always feel as though you caused your death.

Most mobile versions or Rogue and Nethack are terrible to play but Powder is seamless and customizeable,

It's possible to mix and match and 'class' and possible to be a purist the whole run.

To me this is easily the best mobile ported Roguelike, probably because it was the first for the GBA.

No idea, never used Song before except on an abortive stealth attempt. Simply making the crown to begin with is the only necessity, but I think dumping smithing would be a bad idea because you can't rely on getting enough extra Grace without it. Just picking it up in the course of play instead of at the start? I dunno. I got lucky and had both Gondolin and Doriath longswords by 150', my damage would have been terrible otherwise. Centipedes were actually dangerous. You do need to go all-in on it really, because then you can dump all defense.
