The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Crossout
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Garry's Mod
>GearBlocks
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Skywanderers
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Do people do this shit intentionally to drive prices down, or are they just fucking stupid?

Like I see lots of things for sale in this game where people just dump 20-40 of something at a price creating a blockage, and because people want to sell right away of course they are going to put their shit up cheaper than the big block of 20+ things that will take forever to sell.

If /egg/ really wanted we could take total control of the market, driving the price of specific items up or down.

Basically, factorio is my spreadsheet game these days, and I'd like to play something in 3d that has the same focus on automation. FC is great in theory, but it feels like watching a minecraft twitch stream with a bullshit neon colour palette.

Ok i looked at the game.
You can't build your vehicles, you can only use various IRL vehicles to alter a game world.
You can build houses and dig ditches but other than that you don't have an objective at all.

Also, i kinda want a anime mecha /egg/ game that allows the player to, if built properly, say "fuck it" to all forms of common sense.
Yes, i just rewatched the whole Giga Drill Breaker scene, why do you ask?

Sperger update brings us the much requested chink translation, along with changes in the spawn timer of the skin crates (now 10-45 minutes between drops).

I seriously doubt they'd control orbits in that manner. They'd essentially only load other orbiting objects when you come close to them, and in that instance the object you're standing on would be 'not moving at all' whereas the object you're observing would be moving at whatever differing velocity.
If you were oribting around a planet the only thing that would change is the planet textures.

It's all reference frames.
>>
>>187114010
why not just handle it with static space and fool player with it? coordinates will move no doubt but it would be just fluff text, real stuff inside serbian will just seamlessly pop static grids under player's nose(and collapse behind him) and determine how many grids in what direction he needs to cross if he wants to arrive and (((match speeds))) with destination's grid

Yeah the laser effect could use some work. Different colors for offensive and defense lasers and different colors for shells without adding blocks would be nice.
>>
>>187192862
It might seem like making a train with a mix of shit for everything is a good idea, but then you will want to connect something else to that rail system and it will be all fucked.
You will at some stage have multiple places that will provide and require plates, plastic, and all that shabang, and from what it seems like you have dedicated offshoots of your factory for different manufacture, but I'm only guessing.

you missed a few when it changed altitude, maybe that would be key at some point (SR71 levels of flat eenemies), but it helped to stop its shit in mid air and 15% feels like nothing unless the accuracy is that bad that you suck for any improvement.

I have no Idea how to get the AI to shoot accurately, with manual firing the railguns hit exactly where you point them but the AI seems to enjoy shooting at empty space even with 9 meter rangefinders and laser tracking it's very frustrating.
>>
>>187192862
>one tren per outpost
>outpost has 1 station for everything

multiple stations per outpost
each tren is dedicated for particular resource
each tren goes everywhere
stations are turned on/off on circuit condition (has the outpost got enough of resource X)

remember that if tren has multiple stations of the same name it'll go to the nearest empty online station with said name, which is great for using 1 tren for supplying multiple outposts
>>
>>187194542
>I have no Idea how to get the AI to shoot accurately
I dont know if you could limit the vertical angles of the guns despite the autoaim, because you could use some of the small lasers to stop more howitzer style of shots by limit its depresion to a specific value so it aims a little higher than it should, also if you can change those values on the fly, or have presets.

I really don't get it. The guns are highly accurate from several miles away but the Ai often misses at close range by 10-20 meters I like that the game is so complicated but sometimes the number of factors at work is too much.
>>
>>187197120
Maybe the autoaim is in "general-average" numbers and gets affected more and more in relation to a slower bullet velocity.
So for lasers works perfectly but for other stuff dont.
Happens all the time in spengos, gattlings hit you every time, but if you do circles missile turrets miss 100% of the shots, and now even more because the slowly accelerate.

Thought up after sketching, I might just ditch the front doors entirely, it was a nice experiment but leaves a flaw.
Instead I'll have a small fighter bay and staging area inside with a launch tube to avoid reliance on moving parts, and a shutter for emergencies only. The front of the raised area will have a viewing window or something, I'll expand on the carrier as a station theme and interior once I have the new skeleton.

i used to fucking love gmod, it was probably my favorite game throughout late high school and college

the other day I tried to build a wing armature thing for an F14 ripoff, like the wings were intended to fold and the control surfaces be actuated by hydraulics and pop up outta the wing instead of follow behind

I ran out of autism after 2 hours of floppy physics ruining everything because i forgot how to build gud

but now i know that i know ill have finally beat my depression if i can get back into gmod and enjoy it like i used to

I think the most impressive thing i ever wrote was an E2 to form a stand-in for the fin tool, like it'd just applyforce stuff based on its speed and angle of attack

it behaved a little oddly by being more rigid but less realistic than the actual fin tool

I think my calculations were just too simple, I vaguely remember making the relationship between lift and drag depending on the angle of attack just a linear one

Yup you got me, simple lasers.

the thing about simple lasers is they have utterly pathetic range (500m) but utterly ridiculous damage in a beam that stays on for quite a long time on firing.

I did find that the AI had a lot of trouble aiming it effectively, so I've made a lua code to shift the aimpoint based upon the velocity of the target and the aircraft. as a result it still does bob a bit (mainly because aircraft are shit in this game) but tends to concentrate most of the shot where it should be.

due to the crap range though I can't keep the aircraft too high. Have to fly around 250 to get decent beam time, and set the weapon controller to fire earlier than that (600-800m) to handle that the lasers have to charge first.

Aircraft is dirt cheap though <2000, hence has proved very effective early campaign. It seems to shrug off light AA fire fairly well too, most of the times I've lost one it's been an own goal and blown it's own tail off.

So, what is actually /egg/ certified hard sci-?
>>

I think the /egg/spanse and chode are the two main certified ones. Then for books there's The Martian, the first half of Seveneves, A Sword Into Darkness, pretty much anything on the Atomic Rockets approved reading list.

star trek is drama and differing levels intellectualism in soft sci fi whereas star wars is all about the story and action where star trek tends to use technology as a plot device more heavily and so may be seen to be 'harder' scifi
farscape is pretty obviously not even trying to be seriously scifi, it's just the setting in which that story lives
for real hard scifi you would need to look to more near future or speculative fiction
the martian springs to mind since the writer had in mind mostly things we could already do

Placing simple things like walls and electric poles is best done by hand, it's about as fast and labor-intensive as using blueprints and construction bots except that you don't have to deal with the blueprints or construction bot movement speed so it's actually much faster and less labor-intensive, especially when done from a vehicle.

You still have to stand there while it gets built. You have to make sure you line up the blueprint edges so you don't leave gaps. You may have to swap from combat modules to bot modules. When all you want to do it put down a barrier to stop the biter expansion mechanic, there's nothing better than running or driving with a stack of wall in the hand slot and holding down the mouse button.
>>
>>187376165

I guess so, if it's just to stop expansion.

(Pro tip: swap power armors rather than the modules in them. It's faster and preserves electric charge)
>>
>>187376339
Corollary pro tip: swap armors by dropping the new armor on top of the old one, rather than removing the old one with the intent of then putting on the new one.

Goddamn it, APS explosions are stupid. I've finally minimized one of my cannon designs but if I put it on anything that isn't a heavy-armor monstrosity it's going to take out half the ship if the ammo cooks off.

This is just unreasonable. My only other option is loading the cannons shell by shell without a magazine or load the breech itself. This shouldn't be such a pain for a 380 rp cannon. I could just as well put 5 large cannons on a 2-axis turret, deal more damage and not risk blowing up my ship.

Sure, inertial fuse HE is a valuable tool, but how the hell does everybody build tertiary cannons like this without actually building a grenade?
>>
>>187462586
Try to armour the turret so it doesn't kasplode in the first place
>>
>>187466628
I mean that's certainly a fine way of doing it and I have no intention of leaving it unarmored, but I can't put a bunch of these on a battleship if a single armor piercing shell defeating the armor results in an 8x8 hole in the ship. I was planning to have banks of these things.

The annoying thing is if I skip autoloaders and magazines entirely, the thing simply does not explode ever; so It doesn't seem rational to even bother making guns this little that aren't literally just gauge increases and barrels.
>>
>>187462586
I've started using loaders without magazines. Still space-efficient and very durable.

again, are you retarded

two panels are stupid if you're going for pure radiator, yes, but so is just a giant fin all the way around the ship

salts that melt at several hundred degrees, likely way higher than dump heat of any system on that ship
salts that have a shitty capacity for the application
salts which are fucking heavy and ever only used in stationary installations like solar thermal fucking plants and nuclear fucking reactors
salts which are on the fucking inside and you cannot see what they're using for a fucking coolant anyway

please go look up thermodynamics, you need it
>>
>>187484701
Enjoy radiating all that heat at extremely insignificant rates.
If only there were an atmosphere that could CONVECT the heat from a RADIATOR

Radiators are retarded for interceptors because an interceptor's engines aren't going to be active for hours to days at a time.

put spherical gravgen set on -1
place 20-30 artificial masses equally around it
place 6 thrusters for reference
makescript:

tada! you have got a gravgen that reacts on your WSADspaceC controlls and works in every direction

downside: it doesn't free you from gyros

The shape and dimensions are basically the same but as you might know the US space shuttle had the main lift engines for getting into orbit on the shuttle itself while the russian version had the main lift engines on the rocket.

The only advantage I can think of for the american layout is 100% guaranteed recovery of the engines, assuming the shuttle itself is recovered. I'm not familiar with the fate of the engines on the russian version.
>>
>>187502946

Yeah, interesting difference.
I just always thought it was funny that Ivan was reluctant to build what looked like a copy.
>>
>>187503084
The more I think about it, the more bizarre the US shuttle is. Why put the engines on the shuttle? They're dead weight once you're in orbit and it requires the construction of a huge, unique fuel tank that can only be used for shuttle mission. In the US version the shuttle WAS the rocket, The soviets strapped their shuttle onto a general purpose rocket as a payload, production-wise it's much more efficient since you can use the rocket for other things,

There's a reason that things like water pipes and pressurized gas containers are not often made of rock. Not only does it have terrible tensile strength, it also tends to crack rather than deform, which allows your fluids or gases to leak out.
For building things in space, I would recommend titanium and steel. Maybe aluminum and plastic, if it's not a high-stress application.

Stop pretending to be a physician.

You do not make tanks and pipes from the same material as your structural parts or outer hull or radiation shielding.

Silicate rock is OK for the latter roles.
Of course you should put your water tanks around the habitable sections as additional radiation shielding, and of course you should make your gas tanks and habitat sections out of metal or some composite sandwiched materials even if tehy are embedded in rock.

All of this of course depends on your ability to shape and spin up an asteroid.

Query:
A car expel exhaust. This exhaust is fairly hot. Isn't this a form of Advection since that is the transfer of properties (thermal energy in this case) through bulk mass?
Doesn't the heat produced by the engine get dissipated, both by conduction (the engine is physically attached to the car, the car touches the ground), convection (engine fan, the chassis is exposed to air) and radiation (low energy IR emissions since it's fairly "cold" as black body radiation goes)?

exhaust dissapates heat, but there's no advection unless there's wind, it's dispersion (both can be classified as convection, wikipedia tells me)
heat from the engine IS indeed conducted to the rest of the car, from where it is mostly radiated out and I have no intimate knowledge if engine fan moving exhaust would be convection or just ejection of heated up gas and again convection of air would occur, if the air was moving (teh wind, them intellectuals call it) or if it was moving in context of the car (car moving)

Looking in google the diffusion is more the movement from high to low concentration, though since the exhaust exits the pipe with a certain velocity (and thus it has a defined flow) it might be called advection.
Maybe it's both? Advection until it fan enough to start disperse more or less uniformly?

>>
>>187512695
>Explain what do you mean by "bulk mass transfer".
Movement of mass.
For example, a simple electric kettle only has little bulk mass transfer (convection) going, mostly caused by differing densities of hot water compared to cold water.
If one were to stir the contents, there'd be introduced movement, and by extension also bulk mass transfer (convection) - warm water at the heating element would be moved away and replaced with cold water.

>And using the term advection with heat is plain wrong.
Why? I didn't encounter it during introductory courses in technical chemistry, but quick google gives me the impression it's nearly synonymous with convection, which I'm more familiar with.

>A start would be to understand what "heat" is, and how it is related to energy, work and temperature.
Velocity of individual molecules, where higher temperature means a higher average velocity of a given sample of matter.
Heat is a type of energy, and by allowing a hot system to exchange heat with a cold system, useful work can be extracted by reducing the temperature gradient.

>>187521437

>shape and spin up an asteroid
Is this about the Expanse? Yeah, that isn't going to work. Most asteroids aren't structurally sound, they're just clumps of dust. Try spinning it up and it'll turn into a cloud. To get solid rock, you need planet pressures, meaning you need to either haul a fucking mountain into space, or cook the asteroid before you try to get it spinning. And then it'll take like a hundred years to cool down. You could search for an asteroid that's the remnant of a planet that got knocked into space somehow, but those are seriously rare. And seriously, rock has terrible tensile strength. It's not going to just magically stick together, it needs to withstand the artificial gravity you're generating. You're gonna be building a kilometers-long furnace, and converting it into a massive active cooling array, and then wrapping it all in fucking carbon nanofibers before you can even begin to consider the energy requirements of making all that useless, dead mass spin up.
Meanwhile, a sensible space construction program builds a fucking wheel out of metal.
