Has Toady explained how the raids will be calculated? Is it some form of autocalc?
>>
>>187187539
Explain what you mean by "autocalc" and I'll tell you whether it's that.
>>
>>187187701

Autocalc would just calculate skills, equipment and numbers with a numerical value and do a math equation to come to a result. It's not a simulation.
>>
>>187188091
How is that not a simulation? Or rather, what do you imagine the simulation is doing if not plugging numbers into formulae?
>>
>>187188967
A simulation would run the entire thing, an autocalc is much simpler. Like Mount and Blade's autocalc vs running the battle.
>>
Can you make trading agreements with dwarven civ if you're playing another civ? Played a few time as human but never had the chance to see a dwarven caravan.
>>
>>187188967
He means arena style "drop a bunch of dwarves into a virtual pit filled with enemies and advance time until one side is all dead or flees".
More simple, he's asking whther we'll just get a "you won!" announcemen, or whether dwarves will come back missing toes, covered in scars, with increased misc object user skills from beating a man to death with a hat, and covered in weird blood.
>>
>>187189202

That, and making sure that a multi-legendary dwarf in full steel plate will kick as much ass on a raid as he would back home, so you don't send 20 of them and half of them die to 80 goblins.
>>
>>187189202
even though the off-site and world gen combat is abstracted, characters do lose bodyparts and get scars in them. I can't see why this wouldn't be the case with your squads.
>>
>>187189141
Well, they'll be simulated the way other worldgen/background combats are simulated, but I think that doesn't amount to what you're calling an autocalc. But I'm not sure, as I'm unclear as to what differentiation you're drawing with that term. At all levels of abstraction the simulation is handled by calculations that are done automatically.
Just so i'm clear, is autocalc a word you made up and are now defining as meaning that?
>>
>>187190363

Nope, it's a commonly used word in, for instance, strategy games.
>>
>>187190363
He explained his source, Mount and Blade. It's a common theme in total War esque games where the outcomes of playing out a battle and clicking the "autoresolve" button are WILDLY different. Like you can win without losses if you play it out, but the autoresolve is a total rout on your side.
>>
>>187190512

This
>>
>>187190512
So you think he was asking if he would have the option to directly control his dwarves? Because I don't. In the medium you're referring to the other option is to control your armies/units, which obviously doesn't apply here. Every combat in df that happens away from the player could be described as an autocalc, but the original question appears to be drawing another differentiation by using that term that is still unclear.
>>
>>187191959
You're right, the other option won't be controlling the dwarves.

The two otpions would be:

1. A full simulation
2. An abstraction

Then the question in 2 becomes how accurate the abstraction is, or whether a monstrously powerful multi-legendary dwarf in full steel will die to 5 goblins or so.

Are you using adv worldgen? If so, try using a mostly default preset, except lower rainfall drastically (try using a 4x4 grid of like 10, 4, 2, 1, 1) and reduce the maximum number of subregions if you're genning a medium or bigger world. If you're smaller than that you'll get a lot of rejection spam. If you want specifically sand deserts then lower drainage as well, try using the same grid settings. If you want to try and get those variable to "band" with each other, using the x and y variances can help a lot. Give either x or y a much higher variance for rainfall, and then give the exact same variance to drainage so they tend to overlap each other. The larger your world the higher you can make the variance without either having to increase the subregions or getting rejection spam.
Good luck.
>>
Do you guys even play the game anymore or do you all just study the worldgen?

Remember what I said about weapons page on wiki being outdated in the last thread? Well, the ammo section into the trash should go as well. What bolts are made of now matters a lot - unless they are made of better material than the armor, they will simply bounce off, giving the target a slow death by a thousand bruises. Candy bolts are now definitely the best ammo in the game, completely shredding even full steel plates.

Anyway, candy > steel > iron >= bronze > copper > silver > rubber dildos > wood.
>>
>>187222078
>I really enjoy mecha combat games
Me too, Anon, me too.
>>
>>187222726
While I disagree to an extent with your other post, you're absolutely right about this. Toady fixed ammo properties back in .40.01 and it just got lost in the buzz with all the other flashy new features that version brought.
>>
>>187222726
This is mostly true, but the is one situation where adamantine bolts are worse than bolts made from other metals, and that is when you are fighting an enemy that is wearing adamantine armor. You see, nothing can pierce adamantine armor, not even adamantine bolts, but that doesn't mean that the force of the blow won't bend or twist limbs, and here is why adamantine bolts are worse than other bolts in this situations, adamantine bolts can bend or twist limbs, but never with enough strength to actually cause damage, meanwhile bolts made of other materials, such as steel, can twist limbs with enough strength to actually cause damage, sometimes even managing to tear apart muscles, rendering that limb unusable. I don't exactly know why, but I assume that the superior weight of steel bolts means they will hit harder.

So, if you had to fight an enemy with full suit of adamantine armor, it would be better to pick up steel bolts rather than adamantine bolts.

I don't have any screenshots but I have tested this in the arena, and you can do the same if you want to see it for yourself.

Update on the comic adaptation of the 2nd dfg tourney:
I'm ready to get started on drawing it, but feel like I should wait for tourneyanon2 to come back and post the screenshots of the gladiator brackets/equipment/skills just so I'm not half remembering/half making shit up for the way some of the fighters (read - not mine) spent their points after the first/second/third bracket.
Man I forgot how good the fight descriptions were; reading through the archive again I'm getting excited to start drawing these battles. Another fun thing is trying to guess which fighters were managed by who, which is to say, what managers had more than one fighter. I only which fighters I managed and that Koksal's manager also submitted the final entry (which I think was Efeye, right?). If anyone who managed multiple fighters reads this, it'll help me out a bit if you can reply and tell me which fighters you managed.
The idea of making this a pretty faithful adaptation of a forum game into an actual fleshed out story with characters and names and a setting has got me pretty excited to get on with drawing it.

Where are you tourneyanon ;_;

20-30 people whom I always talk to in every thread, practically every day

I have friends irl, people who care for me, and for whom I care, but I think I also care about you, regulars from /dfg/, you are good, and I hope we have many good times in the future

This is what happens to any general that goes too long without intervention. It stagnates, accumulating the same people and gaining its own personality inherent to all those anonymous posters. If anything, the tourney was a blessing because it brought new blood. Without it, you just become /ksg/ no matter how much more you're talking about the actual game.
>>
>>187265360
Could be worse. It could turn into another waifufaggotry circlejerk.
I think we should strive to do tourneys regularily and maybe even other organized communal games like succession forts if only to give people something to talk about. But if the current tournament is any indication that's probably a pipe dream.

It really toggles my cats when I hear some dwarves saying that we shouldn't let our goblin friends into the fortress. I believe it is our duty to help those in need and we should share our plump helmets and booze with goblin visitors. We are producing 50 steel bars every month, but poor goblins have to use copper and iron, where's your compassion? Dwarves only see them as violent besiegers, but I'll have you know, those are not real goblins. Goblins are race of peace and it really pulls my levers that our green friends have to suffer oppression because of some unfortunate ambushes. Many of them are legendary wound dressers and siege engineers (which has nothing to do with sieges). Dwarves talk about hammergoblins and lashers, but the truth is, most visitors are mothers with children (which aren't kidnapped, you fucking bigot, goblins can have beards too). I also think that baron should ban certain engravings. Just not so long ago, I was climbing some 3x3 stairs when I saw an engraving. It was an image of dwarf and two goblins. The dwarf was striking down two goblins. I felt sick and I retched x12 and I vomited x13.
I mean, come on, it's 1050, we're not in the Age of Myth anymore.

The person who reports the bug chooses the value for that field. It has no relationship to the bug's actual impact on gameplay beyond the bug reporter's opinion, and no impact on how bugs are selected for fixing.
That said, it is pretty minor. It doesn't cause crashes or harm performance. It doesn't break the functionality of any features outside itself or cut off access to any content (except maybe fell/macabre moods). It's fix will be simple weighting tweak. On the spectrum of df bugs it's practically nothing.

actually DFHack has a utility called "misery" that multiplies the effect of unhappy thoughts. now you can have tantrums and such again without the rediculous loyalty failure spirals of the old version.

And repeat the process.

I can't imagine the billion new processes being added keeping the game running stable for a reasonable amount of time.

World activation added in .40.01 appears to be the biggest recent offender on that front. There's just a lot more the game tracks since then. Multitile trees (added in the same update) have also been fingered as culprits, and I've had some anecdotal evidence of my own to support that supposition, though I've also seen reason to think it's not as simple as that.

It's not even cheap shit to make you feel bad, the characters are complex and interesting, and the whole game gives a well done point

I don't know any of the context, all I know is that some texas university hosted it. The download seemed kinda sketchy. I probably wouldn't download it if it wasn't from an .edu domain.

It might just be some of the interviews I already have in my collection, but it doesn't seem familiar. It might be an unknown interview.

it will be the topmost hit. it seems a bit sketchy, since opening the page will save the document to your temp folder without asking for permission. but like I said, it's an edu domain, so I can't see any problem.

I'm investigating the context at the moment.

UPDATE:
here's the context for the interview transcript:

he also linked to a download for the audio.

it's some guy interested in archiving old games to preserve them. he had a project about it, and used to run a (now defunct) website. that's the context for the interview.

this might be the rarest toady interview to date, considering it's not mentioned ANYWHERE but on this blog.

No such thing, assuming you can always get to the ones you want/need without too much difficulty. And my experience is that when it's decided that there are "too many options" and that some should be removed, it's always really useful stuff that's removed and pointless junk that's left in.

Olon burned to death after killing a forgotten beast made of fire. He was a former spearmaster who once dropped his adamantine spear during a siege and never picked it up again. I never tried to fix it because he immediately started climbing horizontally along a ledge 1z below where the gobs were spawning and smacking them with his shield. Inappropriate climbing is a time-honored tradition in our fort and his was by far the coolest use of it, so I thought "don't fix what ain't broken". Over the course of time he became an elite wrestler. On the fated day he initially ran from the FB, using his familiar climbing skills to move mushroom cap to mushroom cap, until he found his courage and dropped out a burning whitecap right next to the creature and beat it to death with his shield. His older brother Sazir, a mechanic, spent days in shocked bereavement. His only other relative here were an aunt and a grandmother (whose husband had become a werechameleon and died to a FB years earlier), both elite marksdwarves, neither of whom cared very much. I still haven't filled his spot in the squad he fought with.
There were two raw smoky quartzes used in the creation of the artifact, which is why there could be two images made from it.

Okay, I've listened to one hour of this (it's over two hours long), and so far, it's really interesting. They go more indepth than any other interview I've heard. They talk about the work process, the labour division between the brothers, how they brainstorm for ideas, et cetera. Obviously a lot of it is outdated (this is back in 2009), and they're still talking about the now abandoned "power goals".

In any case, it's worth a listen.

My idea would be that if one snuck in you'd get messages of your dorfs dying of alcohol poisoning and think nothing of it and if you paused the game you'd zoom right over the barrel bug since it looks like a normal barrel. Oh I must have missed that. I do plan on making a creature mod at some point so I'll definitely be including the barrel bug as part of that.
>>
>>187425317
It's not hardcoded. You can create a creature that can transform into any other creature you want. Vanilla werebeasts use the same raw structures that every other kind of creature does, they're just genned at world creation and put into a .dat file instead of a .txt file.
>>
>>187426426
It means they don't have external testicles.
>>
>>187429251
The problem custom ones can only transform once or twice IIRC.
>>
>>187429442
You recall incorrectly. Body transformation interactions work the same way as any other interaction.

Have you ever spent entire afternoon crying in the fetal position because your favorite Goblinzā„¢ came in iron cans and you couldn't decide which tool you should use to open them?
Fear not, the finest dwarven scientists are here to help you.

In each test 100 of our researchers were paired with goblin, erm, volunteers. Our green friends were equipped with full iron armor (breastplate, mail shirt, helmet, greaves, gauntlets [2], high boot [2] and shield), while dwarves received appropriate steel weapons as well as sets of full steel armor. To ensure safety, all researches were not only grand master fighters and grand master [WEAPON]dwarves, but also grand master armor users, shield users and dodgers. Each pair was put in a separate 7x7 room with two tiles wide walls. Fighters were placed next to each other, so battles could start immediately.

As it turns out, the best steel weapon to use against goblins in iron armor are swords, followed closely by spears and then axes. Performance of blunt weapons was surprisingly disappointing, as hammers took on average 3 times longer to kill opponents than swords. Maces were even worse, in few cases dwarves were unable to prevent goblins from turning the duel into a wrestling match.

Now you're probably scratching your beard and saying "Well, that's cool and all onii-chan, but what if some irresponsible person puts my Goblinzā„¢ in a steel can and I HAVE to use hammers? Which one should I choose?".
Fear not, we thought about this as well. The time to unravel the mystery of hammers has come!

And according to our tests, you can smelt your steel and silver hammers, and use the bars for something more useful, because they aren't any better than copper. Surprised? Then grab your plump helmets real tight, because platinum hammers are as good as copper ones as well.
Also if you are loaded, just get yourself a candy sword.

Every update improves fps, it's just that the gains are offset by additional features that get added so you end up with a net difference of practically zero.

So what you should be asking is:

Also due to rising popularity of kobolds, we have decided to check how much bang for a buck you get when using various metal bolts against small naked targets.
No, this research doesn't have much of practical value. We just found it amusing.

Anyway, maybe unsurprisingly, using steel or candy bolts against small unarmored opponents provides only slight advantage over copper and silver bolts. Maybe all metals' ability to pierce flesh is close to maximum, or maybe softer metals compensate inferior sharpness with greater density, whichever reason it might be, you don't have to waste steel to get filthy kobolds off your lawn.

Stay tuned for more tests coming soonā„¢.

I haven't seen anything mentioned that would change combat. Although you might want to try and do separate tests for sending out dwarves, since off-site battle calculations (i.e. worldgen) were always a bit weird in DF.

The wiki page on weapons [1] links to a few research threads for old versions [2,3] and ranged weapons [4]. Have you checked out their methodology and tried to replicate their methods for a direct comparison?

I just want military stuff to be worked on most of all. I really want better formation commands, it would be nice to be able to tell your soldiers to not sprint forwards in a slapdash rage as soon as they catch sight of any foe. More precise formation placement as well as a "hold ground" order, with a chance to flee or sprint forward and attack based on discipline skill. I would love to be able to have proper pikewalls. Combat being "blob up and control line of sight so your blob doenst see there blob until they come through your trapline" is kinda boring.

Ranged combat could use some work too. Specifically it would be nice to be able to actually aim your shots in adventuremode, as well as not being forced to automatically reload as soon as you fire a shot. Why can't we shoot someone and then drop the crossbow and draw a sword so we don't get cut to pieces trying to reload?
>>
>>187500867
MAGIC IS MORE IMPORTANT
>>
>>187500867
I agree that it needs improvements, but I think we should retain the principle of not controlling your dwarves directly. I.e. how well they hold formations and which they choose is decided by the chain of command, depending on the personality and skill of the commanders, etc.

Of course that's harder to do than just giving the player direct control, but i think it fits much better in the game.

>>187512874
>how do you know how many ticks have passed until a creature dies?
There is a field in unit data structures that seems to be a timer of some sort. It increases every tick, but stops once the creature is dead. In arena mode, it is initialized with number of ticks that passed since the start of arena, which means that if I don't unpause the game before setting up the test, every dead creature will store a number of ticks it was alive in that field.
I wrote a tiny lua script that collects these numbers and dumps them to a file. Probably will have to add race IDs, since dorfs will likely die in some future tests.
https://pastebin.com/MTy1URZz

>>187514045
Keep in mind that silver bolts will bounce off of any metal armor. Also I'm going to test various bolts against something bigger, e.g. giant alligator. Kobolds might be just too small and die too easily even to the cheapest bolts.

>>187515426
Goblins had no weapons and no skills. I wanted to see how well weapon deals with an armor and strong opponents would simply get in a way, especially since DF fights can be very random. That's also why I gave dorfs GM in armor, shields and dodging even though this level of skill takes years to train.
I'm planning to make some "real life" tests with goblins and soldiers having skills copied from the actual game, something like "which weapon will do the best in a 100 invaders vs 20 well-trained dorfs battle?".

What's cheap for you will depend on the mineral wealth of your site. If you've got a shitton of galena, then sure. If you're tripping over cassiterite in every hole you dig then bronze might be a cheap choice for you.
Anon's material choice is probably due to the old conventional wisdom that silver bolts are the best, based on old 34.11 science back when weight was the most important factor for bolt damage. That was changed in .40, but the bad info has been pretty persistent. 34.11 was pretty much the golden age of DF science, and there hasn't been much done to replace it outside of /dfg/, which has been mostly "unpublished".

Tilesets don't lose compatibility. The most that can happen is that a graphical set doesn't have sprites for newly added professions or creatures, which would just leave you with ASCII symbols for those things.

The last 3 or 4 forts I've made (in two different worlds) have all resulted in eventual instability and Nemesis Unit Load Failed errors. At this point I need to abandon/retire the forts and getting close to them in Adventure mode leads to a crash.

honestly just stick to default. Makes learning from the wiki easier. Use the "look" key (default "l" as in lobster in adventure mode, "k" as in kobold in fortress mode. Then you'll start identifying things.

Download dfhack and use the built-in Stonesense tool to give you a good 3D representation to get your bearings. Soon you won't even need that.

Now hold on a second: does this same thing apply to naked enemies or enemies with weaker armors? Sure I might as well use a copper hammer against a steel-clad opponent but what about against a fleshy FB? What about a non-organic FB?
>>
>>187527006
Not him but if it's made of flesh I would recommend using something that can cut or stab, and if it's inorganic I'd choose something that can cut through the material that the FB is made of.
>>
>>187527006
That will be tested properly, but from what I've seen in "unofficial" tests:
Do you have better metal than your opponent (for example steel vs iron or bronze vs copper)? If no, use hammers. If yes, is the opponent organic and absolutely gigantic? If yes, use spears, if no, use swords.
>>
>>187527006
>>187527595
And the special rule: is your opponent an inorganic blob made of something hard? If yes, GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE and drop ceiling on it.
>>
>>187527991
I've managed to defeat such a thing with a military squad before. I forget what material but it was some sort of stone or metal. Skilled warriors with quality weapons can defeat those things. The only real problem was that it spat poison.

>i literally cannot sustain a 70% child population
I'll bet you could if you tried. Basic survival is really easy in DF if you actually put just a little effort into it. Dwarves need two drinks and one meal per month. If your adults produce on average about three times as much as they eat/drink each month you can sustain a 70% child population, and that's really not hard, seeing as trees produce tons of food, a fairly small farm produces plenty, and livestock, especially birds, are practically self replicating feasts. I could probably support a 95% child population without difficulty. Pic related, it's some of the food supply of my current fort, with well over half of my dwarves being useless haulers who never do anything and me paying more attention to keeping my seed storage from overflowing than to having lots of food.

>>187544764
actually, it's a certain hist fig that causes the crash when he is loaded into the game. it can be a visitor, a merchant, a migrant, possibly even an enemy soldier. the name of the bug is very fitting.

it also happens in adv mode, by the way. of course, it's easier to avoid there, since you can just reload and avoid going to whatever place you were when the crash happened.
>>
>>187545996
So why does it happen all the damn time and how can I stop it (since toady sure as shit won't be fixing it)?
>>
>>187546303
>So why does it happen all the damn time
I don't know, I haven't seen the crash in several month.

keep in mind that if you get the bug on one save once, you're likely to get it again, since the same hist fig is likely to try to enter your site again.

one thing you CAN do is to wait until just a few days before the bugged hist fig arrives, and then retire your fort. when you unretire the fort, 2 weeks will pass, meaning that you "miss" the visit from the bugged hist fig.

In most cases with game breaking bugs they get fixed in a reasonable time frame (by DF standards) but in this case the meme is true. This bug is older than the bug tracker. It doesn't happen on every old fort, though, and the age of the fort doesn't influence how likely it is to happen. You've just been unlucky.

>>
>>187566092
You're just unlucky. There is a known issue of save compression causing corruption, so you should disable it in init.txt if you haven't already.
>>
>>187568441
I turned off compression ages ago (either right after the first time I dealt with corruption or even before) and was stunned at how much faster save/load times became. There's little reason to compress the saves so heavily given modern storage space sizes so it's kind of weird that it's still the default when it increases save/load times by a factor of 10 or more.

when will we be able to set taverns to "visitors only"? I want to completely segregate my dorfs from foreigners, but I also want to enlist mercenaries.
>>
>>187584747
You could make creative use of burrows/alerts to ban dwarves from the tavern.
>>
>>187585043
burrows are unintuitive since you can only make "positive" burrows. they would be more useful if you could assign an area, make it all off limits to everyone, and then select the few dorfs who WOULD be allowed there.

also, don't burrows only apply to labour? will dorfs still respect burrow restrictions when talking a drink?
>>
>>187585397
afaik they should still work, since taverns aren't necessarrily the dwarves first place to drink, if it's just out of thirst. Just select the entire map on all Z-levels for the burrow, then erase the tavern area and make it your default alert level. Should keep them out.
You could also try making a CITIZENS ONLY tavern within the burrow if they still don't listen, then they should prioritize that one for drinking in.
>>
>>187585780
it's still unintuitive. I hate that everytime someone suggests having negative burrows, someone has to go "we don't need it because there is already a more inconvenient way of doing it". this is backward thinking at its worst.

So it seems there are a few things that are very controversial and some where all more or less agree. At least as much as you can get from 5 replies

Pretty much everyone wants
>economy simulation
>war/diplomacy
>other optimizations
and nobody cares about
>graphics/UI improvements
>more industries
>animal behavior improvements (if it wasn't clear I was originally thinking about simulated predator-prey relationships, and stuff like bears rubbing their backs on trees, etc)

But multi core is pretty controversial (either 5 or 1), and magic/dimensions is all over the place with 1-4 all represented.
>>
>>187618693
I think multi-core support is eventually gonna be needed, I think the performance is gonna get really bad with the next updates, such as myths & magic.
>>
>>187619451
See, I think people are overestimating the benefits of a thorough multi-core rewrite in DF, and neglecting the massive amount of work it is - not to mention the various types of hard-to-analyze bugs that could be introduced.
>>
>>187618693
We really need multithreading, but that shit's hard. It could put DF back like two entire years while Toady unfucks the whole thing. And the earlier it's done, the better, so give it another ten years as Toady fucks around with more interesting shit, that ADHD-ridled sperg.
>>
>>187620147
I agree, it will be extremely hard to implement and it could also result in more bugs, that is true, but I still believe that, eventually, it will be necessary to implement it.

Do your cute, little giant alligators pester you to play fetch with them while you're busy looking for cassiterite for that fucking picky cunt of a baron?
Fear not, we'll help you choose the bolts that will tire your gators as fast as possible!

First of all, please keep in mind that some giant gators like to play a lot and even 100 bolts might not be enough to satisfy them, so instead of getting tired of fetching bolts, they succumbed to boredom. These cases mess up the statistics a bit, so it's the best to look at the median and the diagram rather than the average.
Anyway, it turns out that the size matters, as unlike when we shot filthy kobolds with bolts until they died slow, painful and gruesome death, some differences between materials start to appear when playing with gators. Performance of the bolts seems to follow typical material progression, with candy and steel being the best, then bronze and iron, and copper and silver being the worst. Differences aren't huge, but with gators being very cuddly and attention-demanding, saving some time might be crucial.
Giant alligators have size of 3,268,000 cm3, so I'll do one more test with giant hippos or cave dragons, to see if material choice becomes crucial against 10,000,000+ cm3 organic opponents.

Our dwarven experts are at a loss to understand what exactly makes gators tire less or more quickly when playing fetch. The initial explanation for increased effectiveness of candy bolts was that sweet stuff makes gators fat, therefore less athletic. This brilliant theory was however disproved seven broken teeth later, as committee agreed that also well-performing steel bolts aren't sweets.
>>
My battle casualties only seem to be a result of over-exertion, Is that normal? Also, how to prevent this.
>>
>>187648520

Does your wife nag you constantly do go and hunt for some bronze statues to decorate your 3x3 bedroom, but you have no idea which weapon you should pick?
Fear not, we'll here to help you not look like a squashed bug after you finally get tired of you wife's autistic screeching.

Our brave bronze statue hunters with full steel equipment and grand master skills in fighting, weapon, armor, shield and dodging were ordered to bring back a bronze statue, one each. To our surprise, this was a task were axes finally got their time to shine, as they absolutely outperformed all other weapons. Swords also did fine and spears, while much less effective, still managed to successfully bring down bronze colossi in 40% of cases. Hammers and maces however turned out to be completely useless, as not even statue was brought home. So be a smart dorf and don't use hammers on bronze colossi. Unless you are that one fucking noble that really wants to have a bronze statue in a cassiterite-less embark. In that case, use hammers. Go on, be my guest.

Bone is a dense material and solid objects operated manually have a hard time passing through if you aren't ready for it. In an interview with one of the Manson family members, one spoke of how the knife got stuck in a rib cage and they had to jerk it back out with force so they could stab again.

What do you (or anyone who feels like answering) do with dancer/bard adventurers? Do you avoid combat entirely, or do you mix it with performances?

I feel like I'd get bored pretty quickly of just going between towns and hearing the same reaction lines from random NPCs over and over.
>>
>>187675005
I usually do those on my adventuring worlds. Sometimes I will take a break from a mass murderer or an adventurer and just do a nice performer. I will go from town to town, first stopping by the town well and starting a performance there while greeting and getting to know the townsfolk then I will go to the mead hall and perform there after which I will rest for the night. If I don't retire eventually I will gather up a large troupe and head for a city or fortress and retire there instead. Once had an Anaconda woman dancer/poet who became an author after I retired her, she was renowned or something in the Legends but, eventually she was killed when some gobbos attcked a town she was staying in.

By multi-core re-write do you mean using the existing code but adding multicore to it? Or do you mean actually re-writing the game to use multicore processing?

I value performance over new features right now. After years if this shit I just want to be able to fucking play the game without having to worry about FPS death. I currently play on 2x2 embarks with 108 dwarves and little pets. My entire gameplay is basically built around preventing the inevitable and it stops me from just actually enjoying playing the game, I've thought about building a computer using the unlocked skylake intel duo core just to get optimum dorf fort performance overclocking it to like 4.9 with overclocked ram with low latency.

the existing code can't just "have multithreading added"
In order to make the game run properly using multiple threads the code would need massive restructuring/rewriting. There is a 0.00000% chance that Toady will ever do this, and even if he died and someone attempted it after the source code was released, it would introduce oceans of new bugs and stability issues.

Just keep buying the fastest core you can because you'll never need more than one for dwarf fort.

Our only hope is an advance in compiler tech that can automatically refactor code for multicore. It's not as unlikely as you'd think, given the massive spike in GPGPU, cluster, and mass multicore stuff coming out lately.

But actually the thing that matters most for DF is MEMORY LATENCY! The REAL cause of FPS death is all the crud building up in your fort and NEVER EVER getting cleaned up or removed.
