This also brings into the qeustion is it humane for monsters to use magic despite their sometimes and likely horrific actions? Or is manipulative behavior designed to entrap otherwise unwilling persons into becoming a victim of a horrific crime?

Obviously cattle have some level of sentience there's no hiding the sounds the smell or even the sight of their half skinned half gutted brother on hooks just across the room i don't imagine they want to die but i also imagine they know there's no point in fighting it either.

I feel like the Alice route is going to be darker than the IIias route in part 3 for some reason, I mean, Luka's daddy just killed Alice's mom, everybody knows that Sonya is a ticking time bomb and they might not be able to stop her next time, you might even be given the choice to kill Sonya now or gamble your existence that the girl would be mentally strong enough to hold that power in check, you know, the girl who flies off the handle at any chick who so much as looks at Luka with lust in their eyes and does reckless things like picking a fight with a queen class monster by herself despite the game being very clear that she's very weak like any other human compared to a monster, for extra truth, part 2 has several scenes where Sonya is actively holding the party back because as a human she can't keep up in the battles, meaning the other character have to step in and protect her, and her one sole use, healing, is done better by IIias and Alice, who can also fight as well. She's nothing but a clingy,teenager head over heels in love with the only guy in her village who didn't seem like a screaming pervert until after he left.

Not once was Sonya ever useful or vital to the story and not once has it ever been shown that Luka thinks of her as anything beyond a friend, he has more story scenes with IIias and Alice over her and the only times they do talk is Sonya harping on about nonsense and Luka being the straight man or herself being one to some of the younger monsters.

Best thing for Illias early on is to boost her dex and use the holy pleasure skills. She gets angel feathers fairly early on which hits the entire enemy team for solid damage. You can also boost her willpower to focus on the non-pleasure holy skills. Either way, just spam holy stuff and she'll do fine. I personally sent her down the maid route, which boosted her dex and gave her some solid support options. You could also make her an engineer to giver some other dex based attacks for when holy/pleasure are resisted.

Alma Elma is now ruined as a character. Gone are the simpler times when Alma Elma didn't really care for her race, her secret life only extended towards martial arts, and her playful attitude was to lecture Ilias on the importance of pleasure.

If there's one thing I can give Akazawa Red credit for, it's that his generic traced design perfectly matches what a bland Mary Sue she has become. Alma Elma used to be one of my favorite characters and now she's my least favorite knight now. I miss the old Alma Elma.

Alma Elma's character is framed in subtle contradictions that suggest there's more to her than meets the eye.

Such an effort is more than just a mere whim, yet she backs off if Luka passes her challenge. The same thing occurs in the coliseum, where she breaks her winning streak if Luka advances his skill with sylph. Luka calls her out on this in the Monster Lords Castle, that she's pretending to not care and that their fight is meaningless if she's not giving it her all. But as we later see in her fight with Hainuwele, she was fighting seriously as a succubus, not as herself. Despite being one of Luka's biggest obstacles in his journey, she detested violence enough to give him the skills necessary to succeed.

She's also a foil to Granberia. Alma Elma is encountered the most after Granberia, and her loss scenes are often fatal compared to Granberia's more benign endings. Yet Granberia is respected and is prideful of her skills as a swordsman, whereas Alma Elma is ashamed of her martial skill to the point that she feels that it disqualifies herself as a succubus. After killing Hainuwele, Alma admits to herself that her martial arts is equal to Granberia's swordsmanship yet the reason why she was able to defeat her so easily in their spars is because she's a succubus. Rather than test her abilities as Granberia does, she'd rather be in control of the fight; same as in her fights with Luka.

It's a little unfair to complain about Paradox Alma Elma's characterization since there's only one part that features her, largely absent of her interactions with the other knights. However, conflating her (barely) secret past time as a martial artist to also having secret mastery of various other fields is questionable.

And last but most certainly least, the much criticized Granberia sprite that even the most ardent of Red's supporters admit was poorly executed. As far as I can tell, Akazawa didn't trace so this is the most objective indicator of his skill as an artist. Utterly generic is how Granberia looks, with token scales and green skin to show that she's supposed to be a dragon. At least frfr's design showed her as muscular to emphasize her intimidating appearance, Red's lacks any of that kind of charm. As for the face, what can I say that everyone else hasn't? Actually, it just occurred to me that Red always shows his characters facing left for some reason, even if it makes no sense in Granberia's case. His traditional moeface is too small, cramped by her helmet. Her eyes are dull and lifeless. If this is supposed to be a replacement for Granberia, its a very poor one.

It's just disappointing to realize what a wasted opportunity this was, perhaps Xelvy, KC, UN_DO, Jingai Modoki, or even Setouchi could've had a try at these characters. I think Red did a great job with Lolias and I personally preferred his take on Ilias compared to frfr. I don't think his Alma is necessarily that bad either, it just fail to completely convey the seductive aspect that Alma is supposed to have. He did fuck up anatomy in some places, but so does UN_DO (look at Saki), frfr (look at original Alma), and a lot of the artists that TT commissions. His Granberia is complete garbage though.
