Guilmon being the way he was got Takato to grow and take some responsibility. Terriermon's steadfast cheerfulness, encouragement and commitment to Jian really made it sting for Jian when he'd fight and wasn't allowed to fight back, getting Jian to realize that violence really is the answer sometimes and so forth.
