Something that struck me is that this could very easily be changed not to use Chara's name at all without anything becoming less natural. I like it when stories do that. I feel like it keeps Chara more grounded in the game, where that particular name is only half-canonical.
Have you considered that? It's different if you plan to do more with Chara in later chapters, of course, but if this is all of it then I think it fits the rest of the scene better to never make it that explicit.

That scene was Asgore making his peace over them, in a sense. As for actual canon vs headcanon:
It's canon that OF resembles the DT Extractor and has machine-like aspects such as the television, the flamethrowers, and the warning sirens.
It's canon that OF had control of the souls until Frisk called for help.
It's canon that the DT Extractor built by Alphys was used to extract determination from human souls.
It's headcanon (but very likely) that the DT Extractor is one of Gaster's inventions.
It's pure speculation what of all the DT Extractor's functions are and whether or not Flowey put it use.

That's just the thing. I've been looking at both, as they're part of one fic. I've been striving to re-write the early chapters and I'm cringing at some parts as I realize how monotonous my prose has been and how amateur my dialogue was. It's like I'm flipping between the old and new and alternating between wincing in horror and nodding in approval.

I've shilled it here enough. Don't read me wrong, I'd love some actual feedback. it just feels like I've put up my advertisement long enough that if people here wanted to read it, they would have already, and if they're actually interested, they would know when it updates. I guess after climbing a huge hill (it would be absurd to call an idiotically fun to write crossover a mountain), it kind of widens your eyes to see how far down the bottom -where you began - was. If anything, I think my biggest hurdle has been the introduction - I went more off of Toby's tone when writing the characters, even directly quoting the game. Problem is, I find it hard to adopt what he's written to what I'm writing, and as I read it it just doesn't quite gel together.

For some reason I feel trepidation about this. Right off the bat the facts of the case seem to be acknowledged, so any defense is going to be around motive and is a debate about the barrier, which isn't impossible to work, but feels a tall order when you have the facts of what he did standing right there. He did it, and he wasn't crazy or anything, so it comes down to how the Jury feels. And you can't use the dead son angle because, well, he isn't dead, and explaining THAT will probably confuse the jury beyond all measure.

So with all that it actually feels really likely that you could pull the trigger on conviction, and I can even see Asgore being fine with that. And yet that feels like it would go against the tone you've set for DR, and would be quite the downer, especially if you finish it right before The End comes out.

Think I'll hold fast on reading it until it's finished, as I don't have much of an appetite for serialised stories of indeterminate schedule, but I hope it works out well for you.

The chief difference is rather than standing there and taking an enemy's attack like in Final Fantasy, the came turns into a pseudo shoot-em-up where you fly around and dodge their attacks. And then you get your turn and can decide whether to straight up fight them or try and resolve things peacefully.
