You're welcome, I had to google an authentic DOS VGA font and spend two maybe three whole minutes in Ms paint to shit out that meme I'm surprised I even got the opportunity to use.

In all seriousness, the hype is pretty much dead at this point since the tourney's been dragged out for so long. But some closure would be appreciated nonetheless.

Sorry, tourneyanon, you knew the risks when you took the job. It's not like we're wishing death on you or anything like that, we just assume the worst when our need for instant gratification goes unindulged. Besides, if you buy into the meme magic shit, just keep repeating that meme magic doesn't real until you meme it into reality. Then you'll be effectively immune to rectal cancer.

First they came for tourneyanon, and I did not speak out, because I didn't care about the tournament.

Then they came for the koboldfags, and I did not speak out, because I was not a koboldfag.

And when they came for the frogposters, I did not speak out, because I was not a frogposter.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak.

I know I would have. I don't ever not take an anvil unless I'm doing a challenge game. I'm not sure how you're supposed to find it hard to afford, either. Maybe if you're taking a full set of steel munitions and a bunch of livestock, plus enough food and drink to last a year? I dunno, it just seems to me like having difficulty affording an anvil on embark means you're wasting your points somewhere.

Has anyone considered that once there are quests to return or steal artifacts companions won't be a liability because they will no longer be able to steal the credit like in slaying quests, since even if they kill a bunch of dudes you still get the praise so long as you're the one handing the quest giver the thing? I'm looking forward to actually bringing dudes along for once.

>>
>>186370023
I think certain things should be close to impossible to kill even with perfect demigod adventurers, at least in the current game. Forgotten Beasts are like Nature Deities, and mortal beings shouldn't really be able to kill them, even under the best circumstances.

the easiest way is through storytelling.

that way you don't have to go through the extremely unituitive rumour list. instead, you can just pick a site, and then go to the bottom of the event list for that site.

hopefully toady eventually fixes the rumour list by adding more searchable keywords, but until then, storytelling is the best way to go.

I have it on good authority that Toady spends most of the day sorting fire-hot cheetohs into piles based on their degree of variance from perfect radial symmetry. Then he eats the most symmetrical pile and ships the rest back to the manufacturer as "defective products" with meticulous measurements to back up his claim. Then he naps. Then he plays Dark Souls for a while. And then he works on DF if he isn't feeling too tired.

>(Toady One) Main thing this week was replacing the giant unintelligible news/rumor dump from the outpost liaison with a display on the world map, over in the new mission map screen. When Demigods get overhauled to be related to worldgen myths then maybe you'd be on equal footing. Or when artifacts are reworked with the magic patch (~2035). It doesn't seem right to me that a peasant can wrestle something deific into submission with enough training and no outside help.

>>
>>186459530

I just think that picking peasant should lock you into "mundane" mode, like you can gather a band of warriors, deal with goblins and whatnot and contribute to your civ or start your own. Killing Forgotten Beasts and Demons should be reserved for Demigods in the Age of Legends.
>>
>>186459982
>restrictions
>in an ASCII game where imagination is everything

pls no

just roleplay if you want to do it like that.
>>
>>186460093
I can't quite articulate what I mean because "He has a poor linguistic sense", but it's not a restriction. Like if your decked out peasant to elite warrior human came across a Forgotten Beast you can still try but you'd get your shit kicked in 9999/10000 times. You might with a large army be able to repel a Titan from attacking your homestead but probably with massive casualties. The only way mundane individuals should be able to deal with supernatural threats is if they come armed with divine gear from the artifact overhaul, or get really lucky. But of course everyone is free to enjoy what they want.
>>
>>186459684
Meant more in the way of traps and fortifications for someone who has a handle on the basics but isn't ready for flood chambers and atom smashers.
>>
>>186460474
Marksdwarves are really handy to have but are really quirky to set up without live training, and you need to have perfectly sealed areas with fortifications to stop them charging out. Generally the most interesting way to deal with sieges is to split up your invasion with bridges and let your melee military deal with it hand to hand with favourable numbers, but that's just personal opinion. Eventually you won't need to bother, a squad of 10 legendary dwarves in steel can comfortably deal with 100+ sieges provided there aren't too many bowgoblins. Cage traps are fun to mess around with until you see how broken they are though, and prisoners help speed up the training process.

>>186460408
That just sounds like an unnecessary restriction. The way you describe it almost sounds like putting a skill cap on peasant characters' skills, or giving them some sort of negative attribute modifier that puts them at a major disadvantage. I personally think that that is a bad idea.
The whole point of playing as a peasant character is to have more challenge and for there to be more of an uphill climb before you reach legendary status, while heroes and demigods have respectively shorter climbs. (These climbs are negated by skill grinding, but I digress.)
If you make it impossible for peasants to become truly legendary, then what's the point of playing as a peasant?

For roleplay reasons. Toady has already said that eventually Demigods will be rolled in with worldgen myth gods and have appropriate spheres, powers and weaknesses which will differentiate them anyway. Why should Kadol McNormal be able to hit the same strength limit as the Demigod avatar of Fortresses, War and Iron? The way peasants are now relative to demigods is purely coincidence.

BREAKING DWARF NEWS ON DFN.

LOCAL DWARVEN FORT BOARBOATS WAS ATTACKED THIS EVENING WHILE CONDUCTING TRADE BUISINESS WITH THE UNTAMED IRONS EMPIRE WHEN A BRONZE COLOSSUS ARRIVED ON SCENE AND MADE ITS WAY TO THE FORT

IN A SHOW OF BRAVERY THOSE DWARVES CURRENTLY HAULING STATUES TO THE DEPO DROPPED THEIR GOODS AND RUSHED THE MONSTER, WHO HAD CHOSEN TO FIGHT WITH A DOG BONE BRACELET, AND PROCEEDED TO FIGHT OUTSIDE THE FORT.

THOUGH TRAGICALLY LIVES WERE LOST, INCLUDING THE MANY CIVILIANS, THEIR ACTIONS BOUGHT ENOUGH TIME FOR THE MILITIA TO ARRIVE. THOUGH MORE WERE LOST IN THE FOLLOWING MILITARY CONFLICT, THE BRONZE COLOSSUS WAS BROUGHT LOW BY WRESTLING AXEDWARF VUTOK ALZATRITH, WHO CLEAVED THE MONSTER IN TWO AND CARVED HIS HUSK IN TO THE IMAGE OF A BAND OF COATIS. THOUGH THE LOSSES WERE HIGH, THE FORT WAS PRESERVED, AND VUTOK "BRONZESLAYER" ALZATRITH HAS BEEN APPOINTED CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD.

forgive the autism, it was my first bronze colossus fight and I thought I was a goner.

Is there a way to make Dwarves care about custom stockpiles?
I had a second wood furnace by my metal forge and not a single dwarf ever put charcoal down to the stockpile right next to it, nor did they put the gelena in the smeltable ore stockpile or the resulting lead and silver in the custom metal stockpile.

I assume they were dumping it in my other stockpiles in the upper floors
>>
>>186474680
The main thing is to disable the item you want from the general stockpile, dwarves won't move it from the existing pile to the new custom pile to redistribute if the item is allowed where it is.
>>
>>186474680
Also if you need something in particular moving quick then you can burrow a hauler so they can only access the things you need moving. I do this to help with cluttered smelters and woodburners. Just remember to unburrow them so they don't starve to death, or make a custom burrow that includes the food/drink stockpile and a table and chair along with the workspace.
>>
>>186474906
I wish there was an option to prioritise certain piles over others.

for example, to make a tavern function properly, you need a booze stockpile inside the tavern. however, it's usually not viable to keep all booze in the tavern pile, you need a bigger main pile somewhere else. and when you have another pile, there's no guarantee that they'll put booze in the tavern pile.

in this case, it would be useful to prioritise the tavern pile. if there's empty room in it, they put the booze there until it's full, and when it's full, they put it in the other pile.
>>
>>186476091
There's always cheeky work arounds. Again, for example if you make a custom stock pile for one specific type of beer in your tavern then disable all that type in your main pile then eventually dwarves will move the stuff from the existing stockpile and every new unit will go straight to the tavern.

I think everything in DF should be malleable in some regard. Overcoming the impossible is a common fantasy trope and isn't really out of place in DF despite its adherence to the natural, mundane, realistic side of survival.

Personally I'd like all the goblin, demon evil eyestalk plants to come straight out of hell and be some sort of spreading creep that brought the evil haunted areas with it and had some sort of slayable source or way to push it back.
I'd like if it the Titans were some personified force of nature and physically effected the terrain around them and murdering them had some sort of auxiliary effect i.e. area is no longer haunted, the storms clear, this tropic region is no longer frozen or on fire. Maybe they auto-drop an artifact upon death.

It would be probably more appropriate if Gods & Forces had some kind of champion or avatar they spoke through that could be killed and that would effect some kingdom someway.

>>
>>186476437
The point is to never make the same mistake twice, then you'll be able to have a self sustaining fortress after a couple of hours of play in mostly sealed conditions. Coming up with shit workarounds like having only a couple of alcohol types for your tavern is half the fun of playing.
>>
I'm trying to figure out a creative idea for a Fortress Entrance, I want that shit to be cool looking but not a lot of sites don't lend themselves easily to any sort of aesthetic design.

at first I assumed everybody's just really fucking hungry, or they have a craving for meat. However, I'm currently running a vegan fort emulating ancient Ellora (this happened totally by accident of circumstance, I promise) and when a plains titan wandered in and got slaughtered the ecstatic fuckers stopped dancing only long enough to chop up and tallow/roast/etc the hundreds of slug bits, only to leave them in various barrels and going back to their fruit wine and surface crops.
>>
>>186503827
I just give every dwarf novice in 10 different skills, going down the list in order. When I reach the bottom of the skill list I loop back to the top. Then I spend the left over points on turkeys and plump helmet spawn. First order of business after embark is to turn on every skill on every dwarf and dig a 3x3 staircase down right next to the wagon until I hit either a cavern or magma.
>>
>>186503827
>>186510071
Well then:
Two soldiers - absolutely mandatory. Proficient swordsdwarf/dodger with bronze equipment can easily win against majority of the wildlife and even quite consistently manages to defeat giant elephant or cave ogre. I can't even count how many times they turned overly friendly giant alligators into piles of meat. Also proficient soldiers are only one skill level away from sparring, which means very quickly you can get elite soldiers that can deal with most threats.
Two miners/engravers. Unskilled engravers are super slow when it comes to both work and training and sometimes I need things smoothed fast.
Weaponsmith/armorsmith - it sucks if there's none among migrants and sometimes you don't want to waste weapon-grade metals on training.
Mechanic - also surprisingly slow to do things, so I prefer to have one more skilled.
Mason - to skip the learning.

I don't take crafters or farmers because they come with migrants and learn very quickly, there are too many med skills to make a proper Urist MD and carpenter, while useful, is too easy to train to spend points on.

From what I've seen, soldiers absolutely refuse to spar until they hit Talented (6). Once they do, they suddenly start sparring all the time, like a clockwork. I make 2 man squads and give them "train, min. 2" orders, but I have never seen any low-skilled soldiers sparring.

Nice usage of terrain, good ol' commieblocks, there is no excuse for 1 tile wide corridors, your bowyer's shop's unpassable tiles are blocking entrance on the left and corridors going through workshops are generally a bad idea since traffic can screw with artisan's pathing.
>>
>>186574841
Yeah I've been watching haulers path through workshops and it's been a pain. The workshop placement just came up from using the walls of the canyon, next time I'd like to make something more compartmentalized. Cavern walls and spires maybe.
>>
>>186575059
You can always use traffic designation to restrict entrances. The worker will path to the workshop since he has no choice, but haulers should go around.

Embark to area with clay or sand? and why
>>
>>186576617
depends on what you want.

sand = needed for glassmaking, only way to make glass windows
clay = needed for pottery, but literally everything you can make can also be made out of stone at a craftsdorf's shop
>>
Do dwarfs go out of their way to look for special alcohol and food, or do they just get whatever is closest to them?
>>
>>186576617
Sand is far more useful than clay, as it's magma-safe and allows you to produce almost all things the stone industry can (with exception of querns, millstones and slabs), as well as windows, trap components and pipes, making glass the best material for magma pump stacks. You can even substitute cheap gems with glass. And on top of that sand is an infinite resource, so once you reach magma, you can produce stuff completely for free.

Clay merely allows you to replace some stone products with fancier, more valuable versions. Also clay is infinite as well, but running out of stone is rarely a problem.

That being said, it's up to you what you want to do in your fort, you can live without either sand or clay just fine.

I have this old miners that been with the fort since the start and hes really just a walking corpse at this point.

>Gets his legs crippled as miner and gets crutched
>keeps him in the mining force since hes the best miner
>Gets battered and knocked around by some crundles but survives

At this point i retired him to woodcutting and farming...yet
>Gets in a fight with a giant roach and now his left arm is broken
>Later he falls into a 2z deep moat and survives after dodging a goblin maceman (saved by the militia just in time)

At this point i just made him a bard in the temple with some garbage duties and nothing else..yet.

>Goes out with the trash right outside the fort walls
>Minotaur appears and beelines for a hunter, kills him and goes for the bard next
>Somehow the bard manages to dodge and cripple walk to the fort bridge while the Minotaur is raging and trying to grapple him, again saved by the militia

But now he is seriously gored and massive blood loss, i hope the doctor can save him so i can confine him to bard only duties only til he passes off.

It's not unusably buggy. You just have to work around the fact that they cant use a pick for both jobs. Train them to legendary miners, then remove their mining labor and assign them a military pick.
>>
>>186611851
Well, yea, you need to assign them individual picks for combat, but it's not THAT bad, once you get them actually wearing their equipment. The same thing is true of Axe Dwarves who's day jobs are as wood cutters

So, ah, I was right about it being a bad idea about letting migrants in. I got one, at the expense of two of my dwarves, leaving me with three in total, two of whom are so wounded they cannot do anything. It's up to my miner to wall off the surface, and in this vital moment, he does what? He decides to sleep right next to his dying buddies and a path leading directly to the thrall-infested surface.
>>
>>186612475

>>186609449
You want more sedimentary layers. That means low volcanism. Drainage makes no difference. If you avoid aquifers as a rule, stop. Aquifer always means sedimentary layer, and many worlds don't spawn with any sedimentary layers without one. Hematite is the only iron ore that can spawn outside a sedimentary layer, in igneous extrusive layers, which can appear at any site. It's luck of the draw, though, and many igneous extrusive layers won't have any.

So, what I said there? Completely wrong. I have no idea how these people are being infected, some just don't get converted, others do. Anyway, I have it down to one husk who is locked into a chamber. Unfortunately, that chamber is the only passage to my farms and food stockpliles. This is going to be interesting, seeing how many dwarves it takes to kill this axe-wielding abomination.

>>186622979
Okay, ignore what I said there too. One of the doors was jammed open, and in trying to dig around the husk I accidentally released it.

2/3rds of my fort (16 of 24) dwarves died killing it, among which was a legendary armourer migrant. BUT. Eight dwarves. This isn't unrecoverable. I'm just going to have to triple airlock everything from now on, and completely stomp out my wood industry until the caverns.

Also, really fucking hope that this isn't a reanimating biome, otherwise I'm triply fucked.

So, in the 45 minutes since that massacre, I've had a migrant wave (two survivors, no home-team deaths), but almost everyone else was husk-ified. I've also found out some interesting things about these husks through observation:
1) They can heal from wounds, though I'm pretty sure it isn't any faster than normal healing
2) They often fight each other. I think I have three instances of eternal combat at this moment in time
3) They are infectious - some of the inbound dwarves were fine, only to succumb later in their rooms/workstations/farms. I'm reasonably certain my 10 are clean, though I'm making sure that everything is modular just in case I need to quarantine anyone.
3) They can learn. Fast. I have may highly skilled soldier-husks out there, who have visibly developed in skill. One is a legendary wrestler and fighter, despite starting with almost nothing in either skill when he was husk-ified less than a year ago.

I'm hoping that I can use my newly acquired knowledge to save as many of the new migrant wave as possible, as 10 dwarves take a fucking eon to get anything done, and I'm (as of yet) barely half way through memorializing all the 50(!) dead. Also, still not sure if a husk will need a memorial, or if they're technically still living. I suppose I'll have to find out if a husk-ghost rises.
>>
>>186628359
I honestly recommend using cave-ins if possible at this point
>>
>>186628689
Underground is fine. The problem is the roving horde of husks on the surface, and the fact that they seem to congregate around my entrance to stop migrants getting in. Right now I'm trying to guide a high master weaponsmith through the gauntlet, but I'm sure it's not going to work.

Maybe I could use cave-ins in a trap, or weaponize atom smashers even. Seems kind of cheesy, but fuck it.

Dust, liquid, and other bad things stick to dwarves, often until they are washed off. The easiest way to deal with this would be to have your dwarves walk through shallow water to wash it all off. Alternatively, lead any thralls through said wading pool before any dwarves come in to melee with them.

I don't know if the bodies that were covered in dust/liquid/etc are still considered covered / able to transfer to dwarves that contact it, but, be careful. You're best off just permanently quarantining any husks until you have the means to protect your dwarves, and digging around it if possible.

The whole point of embarking somewhere this hostile was to shake things up, and I think that this fort, with an 85% casualty rate, and 100% trauma rate, counts as "shaken up". Seriously though, it's a surprising amount of fun juggling those dwarves who've gone insane from moods and those who've been turned into husks. PLUS I've found out that husks go through zombies like a hot knife through butter, so that's interesting.
>>
>>186631976

There's one of the original seven, husk-ified and about to be crushed. At the moment, I've got a huge steel industry up and running (huge for a population of ten dwarves, that is), which should be large enough to already arm and armour my fortress in steel plate several times over.
>>
>>186633274
Hmmm... It appears that all of the husks and zombies are on the other side of the river right now, and completely nonreactive to anything I do. I'm sure that that will change once the river re-freezes for the autumn and winter, but as long as some migrants arrive before that happens, I'm happy.

Are DF obsidian swords based on the Aztec row-of-razors style designs? I assumed that they were just inexplicably well-shaped single hunks

So what's everyone planning on doing once the update drops? I'm gonna make an adventurer and try to steal as many artifacts from their rightful owners as I can carry to see how much trouble that causes.

>>
>>186666264
Yeah, they're explicitly based on that. That's why they take a log of wood in addition to the obsidian.

They used to have the properties of steel back in 40d, and then had the generic "stone" properties until the recent update (which was obviously shit for edged weapons). Now they have the properties of glass, so they're usable if you don't have anything better like bronze or iron.

Couldn't you theoretically assign a thread to each individual dwarf, even creature? And subdivide that into pathing/thoughts/actions threads?
>>
>>186678393
It's more complicated than that. To put it very simply: several computations have to wait for other computations. Say, a dwarf wants to move to tile X, he has to wait for the temperature and water flow computations to finish to know whether he can. So your dwarf thread isn't any faster, because it's limited by the other threads anyway. Now imagine that expanded to everything and the magic multithread benefits aren't so great anymore.

I'm sure that there are benefits to multithreading DF, but I don't think that we'll see a massive FPS increase like some people hope for. Worst case, the overhead negates all effects, best case we'll get mediocre FPS improvements after years and years and years of rewriting the code with hundreds of new difficult to diagnose bugs.
>>
>>186678393
Of course you could. But since creatures affect each other, you would waste all computing power on resolving race conditions.
It would be better to implement some prediction algorithm that would split creatures into several groups that definitely won't collide in the next tick and then give each group own thread. Dunno if it can be done cheaply enough though.
>>
>>186678393
Also to implementing mutithreading, especially this late in a game, you would have to completely redesign the application. Which honestly wouldn't be a bad thing, but that won't happen anytime soon, considering Toady doesn't even bother to finish/fix existing stuff before adding new features.
Not to mention that preventing, detecting and removing bugs in mutithreaded application is far more complex. We had a fucking dangling pointer bug in two latest releases, this game would crash every 10 minutes with multiple threads.
>>
>>186678762
Multithread fluid flow and pathfinding seem doable and would be a massive step up. beyond that i think memory optimization is probably more important. FPS death in the longterm is due to the simply massive amount of random shit that builds up over time in a fort fucking the algorithms in the ass. But all of those would require complete rewrites of the systems, and that's assuming that they're actual sperate subsystems and not horribly intertwined with tgame logic like they probably are.
>>
>>186679589
>i think memory optimization is probably more important.
Absolutely agreed.
>But all of those would require complete rewrites of the systems

Why, exactly, do so many people seem to think DF is so hard and complicated?

I've seen people in comment sections of articles and videos complaining about spending hours not knowing how to do anything in the game, even after following the guides and flow charts that practically spoonfeed them on what to do.

I've also seen people complain about the ASCII and menus, without comprehending that there are reasons the entire keyboard is used for hotkeys. Hell, sometimes people complain about problems that would be solved if they just looked to the bottom of the designation menu and saw that they were automining the gems instead of designating everything.

People can say "It's simple and easy, you can just read the startup guides on the wiki if you're having trouble", but then others will say "Stop being such an elitist who's so much smarter than everyone else!".

Knowing WASD is about as complex as knowing the loo'k' command in ASCII games, but these people seem to expect DF to be just like the games the already know, but with a different flavour to it rather than a different game.

Are these mouthbreathers really just complete imbeciles, or are the people who can play and understand DF really so much smarter and better than everyone else? I'm getting a lot of mixed messages in the incoherent and clumsy complaints about the game I see.

ok guys ive got a question

ive been having an issue recently where at random times when im making a fort my dwarves will just stop doing things for no reason
>prefs enabled
>tools/items needed available
>able to reach location

on and on, ive even given my save to people who know the game better than me and they cant figure it out.

ive tried even starting a fresh install but sooner or later something fucks up. usually its
>miners get thirsty/tired/hungry
>dig one tile, start to run back to drink, then go back dig another tile, repeat
>disable digging prefs
>dwarves start running to drink again but hit an invisible wall and wont move past it until they die
>other dwarves wont haul anything or do anything at all

any ideas here? i really just wanna play and enjoy the game but its just not letting me here.

all thos those greentext lines are relevant except the last one.

widely spaced teeth is just an ordinary genetic thing in df. if it said that the teeth were "long" it would have been a different story. the teeth temporarily become longer when they feed and stay like that for a while afterwards.

By the way, testing some shit requires cooperation from the local tower. Since testing team is taking its sweet time, migrants that I forgot to limit started to come, affecting fps negatively. Therefore I've assigned all dorfs to a burrow under the raised bridge and had expedition leader pull the lever.
Apparently, he's up to task.
