Also, is it me, or Worlds Unite was in range from "Bad" to "Not so good"? I was hyped to see what else they can do with crossover, but in the end it was more of the same minus actual plot. Like, it feels like an excuse to do some fighting, and then this fighting isn't really fun since there are way too many characters for someone specific to shine.
Plus I think they wasted some great potential. Sonic could team up with Metal for some major ass-kicking. Could have even let Metal go Super for additional risks.

Not even two years, it was between December 2015 to March, apparently due to printing press issues. It led to SU#83 and StH#279 having later releases (StH#279 in particular was released digitally on its original date before it had to be stopped since Archie hadn't warned them), and they didn't even get through a years worth of comics after that break before it was cancelled.

Tails/Eggman levels are great fun. Great score attack gameplay rushing through locking on to as much as you can while still trying to keep the time bonus high. How can you not love blazing through Cosmic Wall slaughtering everything that moves in back-to-back Perfect bonuses?

Knuckles/Rouge levels are interesting to explore, and it's fun to control Knuckles/Rouge, but they're not very exciting to replay. Score attack play for them is just rushing to the emeralds quickly, not any fun chains or tricks.

He should have just been some dickhead hedgehog that Sonic may or may not have already known. Shadow has always hated Sonic, teams up with Eggman to conquer the world. Eggman builds Shadow his rocket shoes so he can keep up with Sonic.

The point of Shadow's creation was to have a dark incarnation of Sonic, someone similar in appearance and abilities, but not in attitude. Although, like, a more accurate way of phrasing that is, a different side of Sonic's personality that is largely unseen.

Apparently, they felt that the best backstory and origin for a character like that was for him to be an artificial life form created on a space colony by Eggman's grandfather, with a revenge plot.

And honestly, I kind of agree. Shadow is meant to look exactly like Sonic, have the exact abilities as Sonic, and is essentially supposed to BE Sonic except darker. This kind of character can't work as just some guy that hates Sonic, because the idea that there's just some guy that just so happens to be a Sonic clone naturally existing in the world is ridiculous.

Because the entire rest of the game is based on relatively smooth movement, even Knuckles and Rouge. Hell, even the kart stages controlled better. Clunky mechs are fine if they're their own game like MechWarrior or a standalone Eggman game, but in SA2 it was just annoying because of how badly it contrasted with the rest of the gameplay.

Cosmic Wall is the best mech stages because the low gravity helped mitigate that.

This, both the mech and treasure hunting stages were fine, at worst they had minor problems that could be easily fixed, they were not terrible like Big or Amy and were not out of place like them either. The whole "they don't belong in a Sonic game" meme is fucking annoying. Just because Sonic himself just runs through levels does not mean all his friends only need to do the same. Compare the alternate gameplay styles in SA2 to other platformers and you will find that the are only really slower than Sonic. Knuckles moves way faster than basically any other 3D platforming character and Tails isn't far behind, so the speed is more or less still present, it's just not the primary gameplay for those characters. My only belief is that alternate gameplay styles should never overshadow Sonic's primary gameplay, but being present at all is not an issue. I would rather a thousand Adventure style game than have Sega experiment with Sonic's gameplay in order to have variety in the series. Don't even get me started on the "you can get this kind of gameplay from other games" bullshit cause save for Werehog that's all it is.
