Showing progress on /agdg/ just post any time, it doesn't matter. There are less people on late at night in US time. But there's still some people around. And the threads stay up for usually 8-12 hours, so likely other people will see it. They might not all comment, but they'll see it. If you post progress just before a new thread is made you can just post it again in the new thread.

Ive already decided that I will have a single scene and have a game manager get levels/characters/the player in and out as necessary.

I'd recommend starting with the official unity tutorials then. i cant stand them personally but they'll get your foot in the door

another good way to learn (what i did) is to follow Brackeys old Make a Game tutorial on Youtube. For a tutorial it was sub par but 1. it helped me make my first game and 2. it was writted not only in unityscript but also old depreciated unityscript. having to spend time outside of the tutorial to update and convert it to c# with usable modern functions was a wonderful exercise to learn the language
itll teach you c# syntax organically as well as how to start looking through the documentation and applying that information
>>
>>184304907
Don't have a particular way, here is how i do

When making sound effects and music, how do you listen to them? Like, how do you know whether the sound will sound the same or at least sound similar enough across a variety of sound systems, headphones, and speakers?

I've been editing my music and stuff while wearing headphones that have some decent bass and the sound how I want them to sound, but then I pull out the audio cable to let it play through the speakers and it sounds completely different. Instruments/effects I could hear clearly with headphones no longer seem to exist when played through speakers, there's too much bass that it makes the important parts sound too soft and weak, and sometimes it just sounds like a different sound completely, like I recorded something completely different.

But when I adjust it for the speakers to sound good, I put the headphones back on and it sounds terrible again. It sounds nothing like I was aiming for.
>>
>>184305552
use wayland, nerd
>>
>>184306175

Put the music on your phone and play it through the speakers. You are catering to the lowest common denominator. If it sounds fine on a bad system, then it is good to go.
>>
>>184306175
unless you can afford an audio monitor, you're gonna need to base your mixing off visual EQs. Get a mix that sounds at least decent on speakers and headphones (speakers generally are more prioritized than speakers since the quality doesn't vary as much as headphones if you have a sub woofer). Then base the fine tuning of the mixing off visual EQ.
Does it show that there's a significant amount of low bass even though you can't hear it? Tone it down anyway
Mids seem unusually high even though you know for a fact that you want low mids during the song? Tone them down.
Audio monitors and visual EQs are pretty much the only things that are consistent in sound production.

How should I go about giving enemy AIs a good enough vision so they detect food items and other creatures in 3D space? Imagine a space game.

Sphere collider all around the creature?
Box colliders in front?
Raycasts?
Math angle cone hacks?

I feel the sphere collider is probably the most robust but then light of sight doesnt matter as much depending on the setting. Maybe a combination of both? A long range box collider in front but also a smaller sphere collider for short range encounters?

To clarify, by "no actual graphics" I mean just use the Console.Clear and Console.WriteLine functions to display your "graphics". Trust me, it sounds simple AF, but you'll feel very proud that you made something that actually can do.

Don't mind if the code itself looks like crap. As long as it works you learned something! And that's what's important

>Unity stopped selling perpetual licenses. It's 100% subscription only now.

>renderer
the reason Unity renderer is worse is because it's optimized to run on a million platforms, which has it's own advantages that no other engines offer
>>
>>184310584
If you have more than 2gb of ram it would be very stupid to still run on 32 bit.
If you have less than 2gb is ok I guess, but I'm not sure if Unity will run that well.
>>
>>184311717
The real reason Unity's renderer is worse is because the developers are literal retards who make horrible decisions and intentionally sabotage their own work to sell third party assets.

Test billboard tall sprite on left, giant rat, will be placed in mines and not prison itself. Shows that ceilings are high enough.

Test billboard normal sized sprite on right. A chicken. Will be used in tutorial/intro thing where you have to kill a chicken as part of your initiation.

Floor is grungy metal tiles. Roof is... whatever. Walls are color coded to let you know where you are a little more quickly (and are otherwise perhaps a little too minimal.

Between the two billboarded sprites you can see a jail cell door. It's closed. All of the doors are unlocked though since the prison ship is actually unmanned.

In the name of using minimal screen space and already low res pixel art, it's a little too simplistic for how much shit it wants you to be able to reference.

Depends on how much immersion you're going for, but a search box to quickly jump to a page might be nice.

If not, just make sure you organize it better than papers please. The tabs or something (I'm forgetting exactly) weren't really laid out the best.

One of their developers, Chman, is working on their post processing stack with an SSAO option that is literal garbage. He's also selling his own SSAO solution on the store that is faster and better looking and nearly every single tutorial they make starts with "go to the asset store" and also have dedicated tutorial series purely for paid third party assets.

The company is also now run by Johnny Ravioli who wanted to charge people to reload their guns in Battlefield.

The first time you learn to program with any language should take about a week. It does require more concentration than most activities.

Learning Unity and C# can be done in 2 days with a couple of the official tutorials. Learning the workflow of the engine itself and then learning to use the C# API documentation to figure out programming solutions for everything happens quickly.

Blue squares are the nodes that are expanded.

It can also work with rays that has a width (big laser) as long as width is smaller than node size.

Also spiders. They are faster than zombies but they stop moving after a while.
Also eggs, which spawn new monsters continuously.

There are also boss version of these monsters. Some of them gets their one stat buffed (HP, damage, speed etc) but others have some abilities such as:
>splits into 8 smaller versions
>splits into 2 smaller versions, which also splits recursively a couple times

How do I make megaman style camera in with just one room in GM:S? Like I want to limit camera movement so that it cant always move freely or always move in grids, but can vary between.

The idea is simple, there's room inn GM:S that's divided to grids and the camera can move freely horizontally in green areas, but not vertically. Camera can move freely vertically in blue areas but not hotizontally. Camera stays in place in red areas.

I have no idea how I'd approach this problem.
>>
>>184318707

I'm pretty shitty at coding, so take this with a grain of salt.
Is it possible to create flags for certain rooms and then have your camera move according to the flag?
>>
>>184318951
Divide the room into a grid (ds grid, for example) like in your picture. Give each cell a variable telling how the camera can move (for example, 0 = no moevement (red), 1 = horizontal, 2 = vertical, 3 = free movement).
Then just check the type of cell the camera is currently in and limit its movement accordingly.

It is this one rocket particles in this one:
>>184316638
Rendering particles is quite optimized. however while creating a particle, it makes a lua call to randomize its properties, which causes the performance issues.

the script is very basic, it just randomizes the things that are used in the shader. but it is still slow

I am using sol2 (https://github.com/ThePhD/sol2/) to interact with lua, which might be another problem.

In future I will make particle creation possible without asking lua for random values

If that's causing you problems it's most likely that string concatenation you're doing. I mean, why recreate it every time like that when you could be building up a lookup table as the program trucks along?

Otherwise, try enabling luajit. It should give you a performance boost in more areas than one. Of course, while Sol is one of the better libraries for binding lua to c++, there's still the natural overhead between C++ and lua no matter how you put it.

Ok.

Lets say you have a cell size of 300. (one room block is 300x300 pixels).

You can get the camera's position by dividing its physical position by this cell size.
EG,
cellsize = 300;
cam_x = floor(camera_obj.x / cellsize);
cam_y = floor(camera_obj.y / cellsize);

celltype = ds_grid_get(level_type, cam_x, cam_y);

For limiting the camera movement, you can get the current cell's physical limits with
x1 = floor(camera_obj.x / cellsize) * cellsize;
y1 = floor(camera_obj.y / cellsize) * cellsize;

x2 = floor(camera_obj.x / cellsize) * cellsize + cellsize;
y2 = floor(camera_obj.y / cellsize) * cellsize + cellsize;

And then, according to the current celltype, limit the camera position within those boundaries.

PlayerPrefs are short term storage between scenes. Everything that doesn't need to be saved for another play session should be done using playerprefs.

Generally, if your player is picking things up and carrying objects around from one scene to another, you would use player prefs to store that information. Then collate that information into long-term storage when saving.

PlayerPrefs is a soft-save that uses less resources then a hard-save.

See people ? This, right here, is a typical /agdg/ troll.

He spent entire threads shitting on this poor dev because his characters "look like the Journey ones", and then he shits on him again, but this time because he listened to the "recommandation".

Do you know why he does that ? Well, he simply does it because he's a subhuman scum who derives pleasure from suggesting useless changes to devs who already struggle deving their games. He loves instilling needless doubt into their minds as they are posting on /agdg/ to gain some insight on their works. Shitty progress is better than no progress

I've got an idea of how it should go but I need to figure out the numbers behind it, as Get Actor Velocity doesn't really work for my bullets.
How would you prevent being able to dodge everything by just spamming right and left though ? Original Metroid had bombs and later Wave Beam for these situations.
A ballistic projectile would also make sense.
Or something like a missile that you can airburst, like in many FPS games.
Don't just scale the enemy up. Use this as an opportunity to work around the issue that you created.

Add some more tactics (as well as some nice potential SFX) to your game.

Leave those attacks more or less as they are. Instead of making them more difficult to avoid, add a brand new type of attack to your game : clouds of little homing missiles.

When the player sees them coming, if there is no cover in sight, he then has to fire flares to counter them. If he does so too late, or if he for some reason cannot fire them (because of reload time, or no flares left, etc), then the homing missiles will touch him no matter what.

Congratulations - your game is now 25% even more mecha as fuck

It took me one and a half semesters of pretty intense university programming courses to learn how to program.
First semester was a weekly "you have two hours to complete the exercises on this sheet and will get graded when you think you are finished or cannot do anymore exercises" session where you had people who'd help you somewhat when you got stuck. Second semester was "you got ninety minutes to do program X with Y limitations, and fuck your questions" thing where you were put through the wringer and got docked points for the most benign of errors. And god beware if you didn't follow instructions like "don't write functions, it needs to be completely object-oriented and you may not touch the pre-written code in main".

Then again, I'm not the mathy type, so I lacked the foundation that mathematically inclined people have when it comes to this stuff.

missile spam is already in, I would just need to make it more proper (see the older webm). The projectile system I made is easily tweakable to make the missile stop homing after some time or home in with more or less accuracy.
I still want more precise targeting for the AI, like there is for instance in Armored Core. I'd like the game to be more about execution of skill than strategy.

I think that it's best to make jams with a theme that can be taken in both art and mechanical direction. Which is why I had proposed the "Ice" theme quite a while ago.
Other examples could be "Swimming" or "Wind"
>>
>>184329783
How do you even make an original game?
The possibility for making something Tetris-level unique is miniscule at best.

Also, define "rip-off". Just compare Command and Conquer with Starcraft, Earth 2140 and Total Annihilation. Despite the latter three being C&C "ripoffs" by some definitions, they are barely comprehensible as even being in the same genre at times.

No it isn't challenging at all, because subconsciously everyone is pre conditioned to create a certain game for every mechanic they know of.

I already know what kind of 3D golf game I would make, I already know what kind of dating sim I would make, I already know what kind of rail shooter I'd make, so on and so fourth etc.

But if the theme was flower power or something, I'd be like woaaaahahaa, the creative juices would now actually be flowing because I never thought of flower power in terms of games before.
>>
>>184331746
So why not make a "flower power" game right now? Waiting for permission from your Bull?
>>

Games as you know it have poisoned your mind and placed you in their mental trap, doomed to forever write a clone of a clone of a clone. The ratio of original games that have longevity to clones is growing astronomically.

You just lack imagination, doesn't mean everyone does. Different people will think of different things around the same mechanic.
>>
>>184332352
No one lacks imagination, that's not how it works and frankly that's a very unimaginable thing to think.

It's about fuel for imagination, it's undeniable that bigger abstraction broadens your scope and is a bigger challenge (which is fuel for creativity) when trying to make a connection with the less abstract( an actual idea for a game or mechanic)
>>
>>184332926
>is a bigger challenge
That's relative. To me a well chosen mechanic or a restriction based on mechanics can be way more challenging and force you to get creative too.
As an example some time ago someone suggested "mixing two opposite genres in a game" for jam theme. I saw that as interesting and challenging because you had to choose two totally different mechanics, make them work together, and on top of it make it fun to play.
An abstract theme like "flower power" doesn't feel challeging to me at all because I can make whatever I want, or whatever I'm comfortable with, and the only restriction I have is to put flower or hippie themed graphics on it.

You just admitted that the flower power example is a bigger challenge.

You are comfortable with the idea of combing two different game mechanics because your brain is already in the mindset of game theory, etc, thus your solution would be, from an outsider looking into your world, predictable.

But the flower power is so much of a challenge that you initially can't comprehend flower power as anything relating to game mechanics or anything your brain has associated with game mechanics that you abnegate from the challenge and, in your own words, default to doing something you are comfortable with and merely tack on flower power as something purely decorative

> methodical coding

Make sure it does exactly what its supposed to without workarounds. Lazy coders tend to insert workarounds when the code isn't working. And those workarounds tend to attract exceptions and special case code, which turns the whole thing into spaghetti.

If code isn't working, you should delete it all, re-evaluate your logic then rewrite it until it works efficiently. That is a methodical approach, one well placed step at a time.
>>
>>184334548
>If performances and optimizations are your concerns then learn a proper language
unless you're doing something horribly wrong, or trying to use 4k sprites, you most likely will never run into a situation where you need to optimize a 2D game anyway.

Image all the possible games existing in the world as a 2D landscape with hilltops being the very besst incarnations of each genre. Unity allows you to create complex games by using the foundations other people have put together for you.

The most important thing in Unity is learn how to understand other people's work efficiently.

The game I'm working on would have taken 6 years without Unity assets. I'm a games designer primarily. I like making games. I'll leave the tool development for people who like making assets.

I have made things from scratch in Unity, but it just takes too long to develop anything. It's nice to have complete RPG frameworks and procedural systems, so all you need to do is design the game and modify the assets to match.

Nothing wrong with that kind of games design.

Yeah I know. But Unity has menus inside of menus inside of menus with tons of options and sliders and shit and I just wanted a rundown on what this shit is and what it does.

I know if I want to actually use Unity I'll need to learn another language and a whole bunch of other stuff.
One video series I was watching, I stopped at the guy adding water. The guy just imported some water asset, positioned and scaled it then changed a few sliders and was done. When I played around with it myself it has all kinds of shit like lighting and shaders and what not. Shaders seem useful, but I got no idea how the fuck they work, why not teach this and let me use them to make my own water (and anything else they can be used for)?

It makes no bloody sense.
>>

Listen kiddo, i bet you couldnt decode a base64 from a binary string. I know all of the encodings and encryptions from the back of my hand. I could send you a virus right now and make your puter that your mommy bought you go byebye. See my display name? Yep, I'm in anonymous. I'm the leader actually. I've ran multiple operations on hidden deepdarknet mIRCs and could onion route your null ping from icmp using tracer-t to dox the site you're currently on. I'm currently telneting your http client ports to send to my kali linux, where I have access to a range of tools, which I'll use each one to slowly dissect your ip address until it becomes 0, you'll be ddos'd for an entire lifetime.

Developers dont realize shit hardware needs babying and fine tuning. You cant just export a destruction & particle-heavy game from a shit engine and expect it to run well on decade old hardware.

Thats why again, rolling your own engine is superior because any back-end stuff is easily accessible.

Unity uses a unit system not based on pixels and its 2D aspect is basically a gimped version of its 3D engine.

It is dedicated to 2D and, by the virtue of having been around forever, is well documented in beginner friendly tutorials. It tries to take off as much work as it can, so the user has a quick success experience of "I made Pong in 30 minutes, now I can make my dream MMORPG".

>Real devs like Bokube know how to bring their game to the next level
No, they just focus on making their game the fastest and easiest way possible to make money with them and move on to another game to make money with.
Do they have fun? I dunno, if they actually enjoyed gamedev they would be learning to draw, model or code their own shit instead of buying it.
To me what they do is like saying your hobbie is carpentry but instead of making a chair you buy one at Ikea and just assemble it.

TempleOS is of 'Divine' intellect due to the inspired nature of the code. According to Davis, God said to create the operating system with 640x480, 16 colour display and a single audio voice. The operating system was written in a programming language developed by Davis in C and C++, called "HolyC".

TempleOS deliberately has no network support. It runs 8-bit ASCII with graphics in source code and has a 2D and 3D graphics library, which run at 640x480 VGA with 16 colours. Like most modern operating systems, it has keyboard and mouse support. It supports the FAT32 and RedSea file systems (the latter created by Davis) with support for file compression.

My friends, Temple OS is divine scripture. With specific parameters because God will not be responsible for confusion.

YOU HAVE 30 SECONDS TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU AREN'T PROGRAMMING IN HOLY C, TEMPLE OS, NATIVE 3D SOURCE CODE, 16 COLOURS, SINGLE VOICE, 640X480 AND IT'S DIVINE INTELLECT

You're not a glow in the dark CIA NIGGER are you?

Honey is not designed to attract flies but it does.

AGDG is not designed to be this way, it was better before it came to /vg/ and far far better before the hysteria over Unity set in so strongly.

Half the posters here are wannabe programmers who have never done anything gamedev related but get boners yelling about Unity and Steam.
>>
>>184351891
Only if you suck at game design.

Hint: Elaborate cutscenes aren't storytelling. They are story-tacking. They add something that runs parallel to the game.

Proper storytelling meshes gameplay and story. Enemy encounters the dude who killed his family? You get a few voice lines and the character gets a frenzy state with a much more offensive moveset, more health and gimped defensive options.
>>
>>184345673
Man you've been trying to pick an engine for like 2 days now. Just use them all and pick your favorite.

Gamemaker is easy for complete noobs, but it's very hand holding and therefore can be limiting.

Godot is fairly easy for beginners, but is less hand holding and therefore less limiting, but harder to pickup.

Duality I've never heard of before, I guess if you really want to use C# that would be the best choice.

He made a kickstarter, it was successfully funded, and he started working on the game as much as he could.
But he lived in a place with very inconsistent internet connection, so he could rarely post, and he just posted updates on the kickstarter page since they were so infrequent.
His money started running out, and people were harassing him saying he abandoned the game. He was still working on it though. He moved back in with his mom. And then he lost a few months of work due to a hard drive failure, and his last backup was from months before.

He's said that he feels sick just thinking of the game now. But last I heard he's still trying to finish it.
