I use them as light assassins (pretty effective with followers, traits and skill), they also have brutal OP as fuck harass skill and kill like 30% of the army in a successive roll. Those melee focused heroes are good to have as bodyguards/character killers for lords/generals that aren't able to do that themselves (gelt, caster generals, sorceror lords, runelords). Most of them also double on the campaign map as public order buffers/recruitment xp bonus/cost reduction, which can be useful. Empire captains have access to the hold the line ability, which is fantastic vs charge reliant factions like beastmen/greenskins. I'd say the most useless ones out of the all the factions are wight kings/thanes. Wight Kings are basically useless now that kemmler has krell as a bound ability, since nobody in their right mind takes a master necromancer over a vamp lord. Thanes don't have anything special beyond their leadership buff, and the dwarfs don't need a leadership buff beyond their general
