Is knowing what pills do or being prepared for contraband items to show up so quickly really basic understanding though.

I was hoping to make my character a young girl with little knowledge or understanding of things outside of her job and the basic knowledge that comes with it. Like how divisions run and what my job entails.

I should stay off HoP and maybe go for engineer or something then?

I went from absolutely no knowledge in medical to playing almost exclusively medbay because I was forced by an HoP to work there as an assistant. They also forced me to put the nurse uniform on in front of them and it made me uncomfortable IRL

Just keep the wiki page open and dive headfirst into it, that is the best way to learn it. It definitely helps when there is someone more experienced there to guide you but I wouldn't say it is necessary.

Mapping, no. Mapping isn't very hard. It's not a quick afternoon project either. I doubt it'll be made, really.
You'll also either need a power source (which means mapping an engineering area and WIRES) or make every single area not require power. You'll need a school nurse complete with chem machines, cloner, cryo (or a server-exclusive chem that does cryo's job of fixing clone damage) OR you'll need to rewrite large parts of Life. You'll have to disable random events too
