IVFM is actually unique among Toady's games, in how it actually has great gameplay. the visual cues the game offers are just good enough to make it challenging and beatable at the same time, and the penalties for clicking the wrong room are just enough.

I really recommend gitting gud at this game. for the rough 30 mins-1h that the game lasts, it's a real blast.

Tantrum spirals were never intended anyway, so they probably aren't ever coming back unless the pendulum swings too far back in the other direction when he starts tweaking personalities again.

You can, it just takes some finagling. Try this.
Forbid the contents of the barrel, but not the barrel itself. Dump a bunch of ammo or whatever onto the tile with the barrel. Next caravan, designate the barrel to be hauled to the depot. Your dwarves should pour its contents out on its tile before hauling it off. Alternately, you may be able to dump the barrel (but not its contents) to achieve the same effect.
I may have the specifics of this trick wrong, I haven't done it in a few years. You might want to practice with sandbags or barrels of booze before using your more limited venom supplies.

Depends on the syndrome. If it's [syn_contact] any hit will apply it. If it's [syn_injected] any hit that draws blood and also does not sever the part will apply it. You can't do inhaled or ingested syndromes.

You should probably give your dorfs gloves if its [syn_contact]. Dunno if its strictly necessary though.

Yeah, whether or not a creature is asleep (or any of the other day-to-day activity of their lives) isn't considered in the background simulation at all. It isn't until the creature gets loaded locally by the player's presence that things like personal needs and daily schedules are considered. That's half the problem with the bug we're talking about; their routines aren't updating properly when the player is around, and when the local map unloads and reloads, it just remember what was going on before and picks back up where it left off. But the fort mode and calendar advancement timescales abstract everything a lot more, and don't know or care if a unit is sleeping in the background sim.

Yeah, but mostly their effects take a whole lot longer to incapacitate or kill a creature than normal combats will last. Interestingly, bee venoms are probably the most effective thing to use. While something like black mamba venom will take a few minutes to start having any effect, and a few hours to kill something, bee venoms apply a small pain effect instantly, which slightly reduces the skill rolls of whatever you put a hole in. Granted, it's usually going to be a lot less pain than the hole itself. This is really the kind of thing you would do because it's cool, not because it's useful.

If you're not an enthusiast of hundreds of rotting corpses lying around, you can build some tracks and make a minecart route that takes stuff from refuse stockpile and dumps it into the magma. Works really well and honestly, I just like how it makes the fort a tiny bit more alive and believable.

Not a cascade exactly, but the woodcutter who cuts down a tree that results in an injury is treated as having attacked the injured dwarf, for whatever reason. Pic is an execution from just such an incident. It's notable that when this happened there was no crime in the justice screen or anything, the mayor/captain of the guard/broker just walked over and brained the guy, then went about his business. Not the only time I've seen it, but probably the funniest.

I still think that it's kind of silly to have a DF calendar that pretends that the DF months and the Gregorian months line up 1:1 perfectly. Yes, it'd be a rather significant amount of extra effort to get the two to correspond exactly right, and making a layout for the two misaligned calendars in the same place would be a challenge, especially if you want it to be easily usable as a normal calendar, but I think it's one which could be risen to, and I'm certainly willing to figure out how exactly the two correspond if you'll give me some time, and have some ideas about layout.

My mockup here actually has a woefully glaring mistake, which I would like to blame on the fact that I made it in a rush late at night. The real world seasons are actually of somewhat differing lengths, which means that simply comparing the lengths of the years doesn't accomplish much for determining the ratio of the length of a DF day to a Earth day, which varies from season to season.

It originally had another, somewhat more obvious typographical mistake, which I have fixed, thus version 1.01

Use zones to create a pit/pond, go into settings to make it a pond. It has to be designated 1z level above where you want it. Then a dwarf with an empty bucket with water hauling enabled will carry 1/7 at a time to it, until it's full or you disable the zone. There's a current bug where I think only one dwarf can fill a pond at a time, so you have to make lots of small areas if you want it done quick. Notably, you can use wells as your water source for ponding.

my recommendation is that you make a side chamber linked up to a corridor with a fortification. in the chamber, you chain up the dragon. whenever siegers show up, you make them go through the corridor. in times of peace, you simply use a drawbridge to seal off the chamber.

this is a great way to avoid time consuming cleanups after sieges.

If you have dfhack: when in game, use open-legends command, go to DF and hit p. In your df folder you should find a few files named regionX-somethingsomething.

So, I'm trying to get this waterwheel to work but I seem to be retarded enough to fail.

The wheel is build on top of the river, there's a gear assembly next to it, then another one because it goes through a channel vertically, beneath that one there's another one which connects to the horizontal axles that take the power north towards the fortress.

Where am I going wrong? Or is it working and it doesn't show because I haven't connected it to anything yet?

I tried playing that game in adventure mode as zombie. I spawned in a forest retreat and fled from the mob of villagers but their pursuit of me was interrupted by the fact they kept on being killed by explosions of basalt. After I led some of them from the village I infected them and fled far enough to offload the site. When I came back to site there was an orgy of violence of course but for some reason all the zombies were hostile to all other zombies so instead of a zombie army the whole village was killed.
