Once upon a time, a writer told a Tortoise and the Hare parody with Sonic in place of the hare. It ended with him going to save his old buddy Tommy Turtle, who sacrificed himself to let Sonic escape an exploding building.

The later Sonic goes all Noir and enters a town full of cyborg outlaws after a message from Tommy tells him that he's survived in hiding. This turns out to be a trap, and it's just a killer tommybot.

Next, Tommy is actually alive anyway. He gets saved because the Freedom Fighters weren't bloated enough. He ends up as Rotor's assistant, with nanobots bonded to his shell that lets him grow a jetpack out of them.

This is never used for anything. Instead, the writer claims Tommy Turtle was meant to be implied gay, insulting a massive number of cloistered nerds and actual gay people at the same time.

Then Ian takes over and one of the first things on his agenda is killing this fuck off. He does it in a really cool way at least, by having an AI hack his nanobots and turn him into a badass Super T-1000 with giant blade-wings. This lasts about four pages, and then Tommy dies for good.

Then a hospital was named after him. And then the reboot happened. Fuck Tommy.

I think what's going to hurt the most about switching to IDW is that unless it's a direct continuation to Archie Sonic (which is unlikely), they can't touch on any of the concepts and moments Archie touched on without them being redundant. An evil nemesis to Shadow the Hedgehog, created by the Black Arms to kill him for revenge? Honey the Cat being the moneygrubbing owner of a fashion line and a professional fighter on the side? Knuckles talking to Amy about how he feels doubt over his job as the Master Emerald's guardian? Shadow's speech about how he swore to Maria that he'd protect everyone on the planet? Great ideas and moments, unfortunately they can't just use those again without treading familiar ground or altering them heavily.

The reboot already suffered from this, the whole "tell things differently but don't do it twice" thing because Nicole's whole deal was her developing and growing into an actual person in the preboot, but they didn't want to do it again in the reboot so she has already grown and just fucks up occasionally. Antoine also became less cowardly over the course of the preboot's run, but due to not wanting to repeat those steps, he's still mostly a wuss with some fighting ability in the reboot. Most of their stories in the reboot ended up being told through constant flashbacks because they didn't want to repeat all the development and whatnot.

Like, it was actual characterisation for both of them, it wasn't just Amy fawning or trying to do girl power, and it wasn't Knuckles just being stubborn and full of surprises

It was Amy having a heart to heart chat about Knuckle's purpose and reassuring as a friend, and Knuckles showing some form of doubt ove it.

It's honestly one of the reasons why it's my favourite arc.
