You can use Luma versions below 7.1.
You can also restore your 3DS to stock, something you're completely unable to do after B9S.
Luma 7.1 is BASICALLY 7.0.5 but B9S exclusive, and 8.0 up is bad, so there's also no reason to update yet.

How is the homebrew scene on 3DS? Which emulators does it support?
I'm asking this because my old DS lite died on me, I used it mostly to play GB/GBA and ZX spectrum and now I don't know if I should buy another cheap ds lite or save up for a N3DS.

NES, SNES, GB/C, SMS, Genesis, GG, TG16, MAME, RPG Maker 2000/2003, Wonderswan, Lynx, Commodore, etc etc. Also a couple more advanced things like Playstation and Virtual Boy but they run like shit and there's no progress on development for those.
You can play GBA games natively with injection, DS games natively with any flashcart, and 3DS games natively (obviously).
You can also install custom home menu themes, custom badges (home menu decorations), take screenshots, stream gameplay to a PC, use cheats, and use various other homebrew applications that can do various neat things like back up/restore savedata and store pokemon without paying for PokeBank.

With a DS Lite, you can play GBA games and DS games.

Second, I'm confused on how exactly the chain load it set up. Is it a .txt file? Do I have to set up directories in the root? Also I'm on B9S but it shouldn't matter since I'm on Luma.

Someone mentioned this is easy install and just to place the files on the root. Except the only files I have are the anim and config files. I have no .bin. And without that how can I set up the payload on luma?

Mostly, yeah. It's also good for other things, like mounting, either mSD->Vita Gamecard or the 3G-only mSD adapter on boot for the Vita. And you can do the same on a PSTV with a USB drive.

I installed Free McBoot onto a memory card using my friend's U.S. PS2 Fat. I did a cross-region install so I could use it with my japanese PS2 slim.

Free Mcboot now works on my japanese PS2, but dosen't seem to work when putting the same memory card into my U.S. PS2 slim.

Any thoughts on why this is? I thought I did I cross-region install but it's possible I did a cross-model install (since I was installing FMCB on a PS2 fat originally), but if that was the case, wouldn't the memory card not work with my JP PS2 slim since it's a different region (and model)?

So I'm beginning to do my own research. Evidently using B9S makes this more complicated.

So I need to use BootCTR9 to load the animation. Even though luma can load payloads, it's just that the animations are not designed for this. They were made to be loaded by BootCTR9. It's not a .firm or a .bin, it's a completely separate file that needs to be loaded through an application.

So despite this being awful and overly complicated, boot animations hasn't caught up to luma 8.0. Evidently it's being "worked on" which means never ever.

However there is a B9S fork being worked on for BootCTR9 but since B9S loads a .firm there is no bin file. Which means its still a dev release. Even so, how would a .bin work? B9S loads a firm regardless. I don't know much about this shit but I do know that.

Is there honestly no one else that uses custom boot animations for B9S that could share their configuration? There has to be someone.
